When I found out about Ubiquiti I was sold and all these thoughts came to mind, started watching few videos of other home setups and decided to buy and install new rack, ran cables for cameras, bought the UDM Pro a 24 PoE switch, 3 APs and few cameras. About $3000 later and convincing my wife not to divorce me I can say that I'm pretty happy, we have solid connectivity all around the house, I host my own surveillance videos and the system pretty much runs itself.

@@psytcp You don't need to worry about that, I am really happy and I read a lot and many professionals use them for their own homes and even small businesses. I had an HP switch and it was way too loud. Everything fails at some point, you just deal with it as it comes.

@@ecu8r I'm not worried at all. I'm making money from repairing all the broken unifi devices and then sell them again to the fans. I guess some people are happy that their device only lasts 2-3 years and then dump it in the landfill and increase waste. Ubiquiti is good at making devices silent as they put fans that don't really turn on so that they reduce the life expectancy of their devices. Time will tell.

Really glad you're down to earth and honest about your level of knowledge on the stuff you do videos on. I setup Unifi in my town home and a full system in my parents new home, added the ability for me to manage it for them. It's really cool, and I can help them troubleshoot much easier while being hundreds of miles away. I'm looking to upgrade once I buy my own home. Keeping making awesome videos

Appreciate the honest position and "just enough tech". Your explanations of the reasons are relatable, your artistic choice to focus on the unique deltas between what you have and what is common in youtube is a good approach. I think its amusing on some levels to have a networking backend like you show with the number of devices you have... but that's another story. But its not a negative, its just the nature of an enthusiast over a minimalist. And comments about "optimization" I think are interesting (either money {you can get x more if you did y, or performance ).Sometimes you buy a car because you just need to transport, sometimes you buy it because it cheap, other times you have a luxury to try something new. These are personal choices, all with pros and cons. I hit a tipping point at home were the number of devices and the usage caused me grief using google wifi (having to restart the device regularly), the locked eco-system didn't allow me to easily put pfsense in front (ended up with a double NAT). So I debate the path to some increased stability and I favor simplicity over many other items these days.. I do hope ubiquity gives you some product to allow you to compare a UDM Pro to pfsense, but I fear that will never happen until they have better feature parity. I suspect you will see nothing but things you miss, or logical issues with their implementation. These gaps are usually "ok" for a typical situations, but its hard to lose features you are used to.

Refreshing to see a slightly unconventional setup, most tech KZbinrs will go straight to a UDM Pro, a bunch of top end UAP devices and the most expensive Unifi switch they can get. This is much more reminiscent of prosumer setups some of us have at home and I'll be keeping an eye out for more of your videos. Keep up the good work 👍

I'm just making the switch myself, completely new to ubiquiti. I got the dream machine pro se and the 24 enterprise XE. Move the Internet in to the outhouse and using devolo homeplug to carry 1Gig into the house as it on the same mains ring. Will eventually turn of the Wi-Fi on the devolo AP and use PoE injector and ubiquiti AP for Wi-Fi in the house. Still a work in progress as need to configure current draytek router configuration into the dream machine. Crazy fun headaches

I started using them 7 years ago.. I ended up taking their Unifi University courses. As a client wanted only their products. As he had enough of Cisco Systems....Was I in for a surprise. As the cost was 10x cheaper then Cisco Systems... I now have several clients that this is all I used. As The Cloud Key allows me to login from anywhere. To perform maintenance and troubleshooting. You can also down load your home layout. Then place each each product in the place you have it. Then use the Icon matching for the devices you are using.... And be real careful what you update. It can bring headaches. If you're not ready.. Especially the router and any repeaters installed.

Main reason why I virtualize network "appliances" is because having 3 Proxmox nodes (for example) + Ceph with dedicated links between them, leaves me huge room for "expanding" the resources of each VM/container, less power consumption, cables, general use of space and a Cloud Key could fail, but 3 nodes at the same time is pretty difficult.

Cool video! I'm planning to set something up also with those two Enterprise switches. But on the Wifi-side. Please do yourself and others a favour and set the 2.4GHz band to 20MHz. 40MHz is always overlapping something. And don't go crazy on the 5GHz also. 40MHz is great in most cases. Only 80MHz when you have the "air" space.

This is a pretty decent setup. Unfortunately, due to me still having one D-Link switch that I haven't change to Unifi yet, my Topology map is broken and doesn't actually work at all. I have plans to replace the old D-Link though :) With my setup, I setup a separate WiFI network for my IoT wireless devices. Even now, I find a lot of them need 2.4GHz only, so it is easier than turning the 5GHz off every time I need to connect one. It also let me create a VLAN for IoT devices to limit their access to things and provide more security for the network. I find the Long Range access points are often limited by the end devices for range as things like your mobile phones or tablets don't have the power to talk back to the AP. I went for U6-Pro's because I can actually get them here in Australia :). The thing I miss is the Unifi Security Gateway. They just don't seem to have a replacement for this, so I am using PFSense as well for the gateway. IF Unifi could do a new version of the USG, I'd probably end up going to that, but I can't justify the pricing of their current offerings. One note on the Flex mini switches. They are great for behind a TV or something, but they do lack the VLAN and other configuration options that other switches have

The 10G really adds up. I bought a small Flex switch for my homelab and thought that switch, coupled with another 5 port 1G switch I had would be enough. It wasn't. I think this is pretty normal, R730 server 4 x 10G, 2 Supermicro NAS servers 4 x 10G x 2 = 8 10G ports,, rack mount PC x 2 10G, Mac Studio 1 x 10G, kids PCs 2 x 10G, uplink to main network 1 x 10G, trunk to Flex 1 x 10G. Totaled 19 10G ports for not really anything crazy.

if your pf sense ip adress is 10.0.0.1 and its dhcp is handing out addresses on the 10.0.0.x network you should configure your unifi default network to match. Its not very intuitive because unifi hopes / prefers you are using one of their edge/router devices as these settings only apply to those devices. Unselect auto scale network and enter your gateway of 10.0.0.1 set dhcp mode to none or leave relay settings though it really has no effect as the cloud key gen2 won't hand out addresses either way.

This is correct. I run UniFi controller on an Ubuntu Server vm. My mgmt native vlan is not 1. So on the uplink port in my case just have your native untagged to whatever it is in your setup and tag the clams in the trunk you want to pass on to a unified switch. On the UniFi switch just leave default untagged. It will display as native vlan 1 on UniFi but will actually be whatever your untagged is on your uplinks.

After 2 months of issues, ripped it out and put back my Cisco SG200/300 managed switched and all was fine. Two of my other friends also also yanked out the Unifi and went back to their Netgear equipment. We were not newbies, had done networking for many years. There were a few things I really liked about the Unifi, but not being stable. You could not pay me and give free Unifi gear to replace my current working network equipment. My 2 cents.

No idea why the YT algorithm found your channel for me but enjoyed the home gamer setup. Have done Unifi professionally for a long long time now. You stumbled into a good config. The Dream Machine is much buggier than the cloud key and the key is a solid little gadget vs running their software in a VM. Your story of having to patch up to find things that are newer made me chuckle. That’s a taste of Unifi software culture. They aren’t very professional about software releases. They certainly don’t behave like any “enterprise” quality network gear. Slap things out, barely tested. They’ll never change. That’s the one warning. If you decide a MUST patch scenario or security fix is critical, wait as long as you can and read read read forums and watch for those experiencing inevitable pain. Ha. Once you decide to pull the trigger do not even think about being off site doing it or that it might not turn into a multi hour mess. 1/4 times it will. Haha. As far as “cool features” the AP tuning for power and coverage is incredible for dealing with 100 machines and mobile toys all behaving differently as to what they like to see from the APs but honestly it will never be a big need in a typical home. Stuff like letting the cloud key auto update things… don’t. It’ll work for a long time then blow up at the worst possible time. Do updates manually. Other than the software release weakness when they work and are left alone they work REALLY well. If they didn’t we’d have chucked them long ago. We have many in service almost a decade after choosing them. Price point is good and they’re only a minor annoyance. Ha. Have fun. Nice setup. I’ve been too lazy to upgrade my house to them or something else but fiber 2 Gigabit supposedly shows up here next month so I’d better start thinking about a network re-vamp. Cheers!!

Depends. I’d say Omada is probably the better choice for most people due to its price point but Unifi is great if you’re a networking nerd. Honestly it comes down to what your use case is.

Where ubiquiti cannot meet consumer demand is a feature rich router and the lack of core switch capabilities even at l3 is underwhelming. Very disappointing imo, but i am the exception. I run all unifi kit for internal networking and my core is a FS l3 switch and pfsense to handle 4 wan links.

Very nice. I really like the setup except for the router. Have you read about Pfsense\Netgate and the garbage company they are? Terrible ethics, you might look into it a bit more, decide for yourself. Maybe you'd wind up just building your own OPNSense router or buying something better. They are absolutely terrible.

I have no single explanation why in the world someone would want to build everything on ubiquity unless you have tons of money? I saw full ubiquity deployment in one crazy truck office. It was a whole rack of ubiquity switches. Ubiquity access points are great and controller management is also making sense to use this product. I have some questions about DFS frequencies, but let's leave it for now. If you open ebay, - there are plenty of used gigabit switches for cheap. You can find even those with 10G ports. You can get old switches from ExtremeNetworks with also 10Gb ports. Why would you want in the world to buy new ubiquity switches instead? Security? I doubt it much. Any VM on any host with linux or specific firewall product will make all the work happen. Ubiquity is trying to push their business as high as possible. But I'm sorry, - security and switches is not your great side, Ubiquity. Please, concentrate on developing wireless products and make it easy to integrate with 3rd party hardware. There are literally millions of switches on ebay and routers as well waiting to be reused. Do it!

I mean...the whole appeal of the Unifi lineup isn't that its going to increase the speed or efficiency of your network. It's mainly about how easy it is to manage and implement different features sets. There is also a ton of data that right at your finger tips and easy to interact with. There are plenty of examples out there but I do agree with you that it is a lot of money and that you can get similar performance from other 3rd party hardware.

@@RaidOwl I love those words as "efficiency" :-). Just one more story I heard from those who "believed" in ubiquity switches. One integrator installed them somewhere for simplicity management. And guess what? All of those switches area dead They are cheaply made unfortunately and there are plenty of glitches. This is also the main concern about them, - cause they are not surviving US electricity outages without heavy-duty online UPSes. I am just not seeing how Ubiquity can improve them. I with Ubiquity to concentrate on wifi. Wifi is pretty great for home and small offices deployments. But Aruba recently it taking over that market. Slowly, - but it is happening.

@@RaidOwl one more thing about ubiquity controllers. they are dying from time to time for no reason. and I am not able to restore the configuration from backup. This simply just is not working. I needed to reflash a couple of sites and build configuration from scratch. That's why ubiquity can take advantage of "cloud" configurations and store it there and restore whenever you need it on any hardware. But they are not doing it. For some reason.

UNIFI IS NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME! You have to use their server and if it doesn't work you are screwed. If you don't have the right Java or if it conflicts with something It just doesn't work. And they have had this problem for over 10 years! SAD! Where would Apple be if they put out such crap!
@redhonu

Just run it in docker. No issues with conflicts there. And if it was apple, there wouldn’t be the option to self host the controller.
