my biggest mistake is that i typed the wrong ip adress on Proxmox on my PowerEdge. It wouldnt work, and i had to reinstall, but now is all fine, so be careful.

RAID 5 was...not the best choice with 30TB drives. Or without a battery backed write cache. It is basically obsolete in 2025 and has been for a decade. RAID 6 would have been a better option.

You can install ollama in homebrew as well, there as Cask which is the same as the app you download then there is also a more normal package which uses brew services module to run.

A NAS should be an appliance, not a hobby. That's why I started with Unraid, then TrueNAS, but eventually got a Synology once my wife complained that she can't access Nextcloud and didn't want to use it anymore and bumped her iCloud storage tier - the ultimate insult to a homelabbing husband.

Given that Beelink is now offering a bundle for GTi13 Ultra PC 13900HK(32GB+1TB)& EX Docking Station(Pre-order) for $678, you can bet that I'm considering it. I would never use the dock for NVME storage anyways and could actually have a decent gaming system for under 1k. My concern is thermals and reliability because I got burned on another mini-pc that initially was stable but became unstable after switching/reloading the OS. *Edit: Actually, if the NVME drives are available anytime the docking station is powered on then I can see using them as network storage but not actual system use.

I like the idea and I guess the algorithm/click bait-fu is working because it got me to click. But am a bit tired of seeing all these nigh on salvation army fare computer + small car-money for storage DIY NAS build vids. If you want to be truly helpful in this space put together a system that uses storage that mere mortals might actual be able to replicate. Find us some smoking deals on nvme u.2 drives or even m.2 2280 4tb units to populate a x8 HighPoint HBA w/pcie switch. 64TB raw mvme ssd isn't as magical but it's still a nice take on the idea. Or a case that supports more dense occulink icydock u.2 enclosures, 2.5" SAS to m.2 tray adapters, and an occulink HBA w/pcie switch + cabling, or even non pcie switch HBA but on a platform with native pcie lanes/x16 slots (e.g. Epyc/Epyc deriv) to bifurcate to make it all go. Contrast power consumption/pricing of options in pro/con analysis block. Any of that would actually involve/show off some skill/lore and be pleasant/refreshing/different to watch.

Thanks for the video. I have a question: is it possible to replace Qnap’s operating system with OpenMediaVault? I stopped using my server for its original purpose and would like to experiment with different things for fun. I have a Qnap TS-453Be and would like to try flashing or installing something else on it.

i use my steamdeck as a server running ubuntu desktop with the screen set to turn off automatically, i feel bad for the battery but it works great (besides the 2 times it randomly crashed and i had to manually restart it) ubuntu works perfectly with it, i think ether steam or ubuntu made drivers for it thankfully, the steamos arch sucks for server usage and its not usable for server use, i reccamind setting pterodactyl panel for easy control or the for 'pyrodactyl' that i use, it makes it easy to run docker images or wtv remotely, if youre gonna do this you mostlikely wont even need to plugin a keyboard and mouse to do it

Ah PC enthusiasts screaming that this is just another Western expensive hobby. 100% laughable. Most people are not going to get any ROI out of a pre-built or home built Server/NAS. Used servers are power hungry and loud. Of course you don't want to shell out $1,300 after you bought your new Mac Mini; like I said hilarious. Mac Mini has some value but that goes away once you start trying to get fast memory fast throughput. As a one shot solution that is where the value is, not everybody but people with too much free time on their hands want to constantly tweak their NAS/Server/Homelab. You won't be able to get EEC ram support not like that's really needed at home anyway without getting this at an affordable price point. You can DIY one with another AMD processor that supports EEC ram for about half the cost. You still have to source a case and that isn't easy.

picking a 45or even more bay 4u server with - for starters - a few good ol rust drives would be cheaper, more extendable and therefore a better and sustainable solution. price and power consumption of those u2 30tb drives is ... well; high.

how about a video on following scenario,- hardware truenas scale, with 4 storage drives, 1 nvme for OS, currently in production. need to make backup, install on the same metal proxmox ve, install on proxmox truenas scale in VM format, pass harware HBA adapter to VM, reconnect drives and restore truenas scale previous config with all production data ?

I use powerline for my printer (external building on a close spur ring / circuit to the router) and hit my max speeds I could get for my FTTC broadband (50mbps) - will be retesting when fiber gets installed to the house. MoCA does seem better, but only if you happen to have a coaxial connection in the same area as your router, and another in a room where you want it.
