When you read anything about the Philippines, feel free to add in there at will "And it was hot as hell." You can't overstate this. When I see pictures of the soldiers there in those uniforms, all I can think is how hot they must have been.

@@wrestlehard226america8 Can you point to any? There are reasons to be skeptical of claims like that. For instance, the Americans claimed to be on a "civilizing" mission in Mindanao, What better way to illustrate the savagery of the enemy and the masculine heroics of the US Army than with tales of random Tausug fighters having "run Amok", hypnotized by opium and religion and impervious to American bullets? The reality probably lies somewhere between green US soldiers traipsing around Lake Lanao, and the known shortcomings of the .38 special's ballistics. Besides, what makes a better headline back home? Muslim Filipino Bullet Sponges Defeated by Americans or US Army Artillerymen Massacre Knife-Equipped Women and Children Defending Dirt "Fortresses"?

@@wrestlehard226america8 My master's thesis is on the historical memory of this war. My position is that historians are often skeptical of primary sources that make claims such as that bullets had no effect on their enemies (as in this conflict), or that angels came down from heaven and helped the Franks win a certain battle (during the Crusades). Even the authors of primary sources can exaggerate details such as the size of the enemy force or their own personal heroics. There was a whole industry dedicated to Civil War soldiers' memoirs that was kicking off when the Philippine War(s) broke out 1899. So rather than get upset because I mentioned the politics of race, religion, and machismo that were very real in the American (and even British) presses at the time, why not familiarize yourself with the historiography of the war? A significant number of works after the centennial (1998) deal with exactly these subjects that seem to have triggered you. *Bibliography* Arnold, James R. Rhythmicons There. I deleted EVERY LAST ONE of the comments. Now I’ve heard your side now I’ll state mine: Everyone always tries to paint America as the bad guy in EVERY situation. Pearl Harbor? They say “Well you embargoed them.” War on Terror? “You’re fighting for oil.” Like 9/11 didn’t even HAPPEN. See the problem I have with this?

Rhythmicons But just one question. The book on the Civil War you listed in your bibliography, does that have something to do with the Philippines?

The Army of the SAW and the Phillipine War had undergone reforms and was still being reformed. Among issues were pay, base life, living conditions, equipment/issue and recognition. As per uniforms, modd ing them was common well into the 1890s.

yep we were taking notes from the British ww2 uniforms.... even though we took Cuba and the Philippines in the Victorian times (and its not a cork helmet its a pith helmet).

I think he was talking about the British foreign service uniform. Khaki had been worn by the British army in India since the 1850s ("Khaki is an Indian word which means "dust" or "dirt") The 2nd Boer War was 1899-1902.

That is an american model sun helmet that was made from cork as pith was not a common resource in America so they substituted with using cork

{ This Crazy Life } Thanks for viewing.. By 1900 the Army was all in Khaki, the blue service uniform { except shirt} was not worn in the field. For the Boxer Rebellion the Army was wearing the M 1899 service uniform with the Branch of service shoulder tabs only. The rest of the equipment was the same.

I have an equip ment question. There exists a 40" length x 2" high leather strap made at Watervielt (and probably others) Arsenal. It has a brass hook on one end. Holes that begin about 10" away from either end and a brass tab at the other end. I have one (it came with one of my Trapdoors) and they pop up on Ebay now and then. Do you have any idea what their purpose or use is?

Without seeing a photo I can not tell you.. but it sounds like the earlier gun sling, but 2" wide sounds to big.. I can not think of any equipment straps like that. It may be something with horse equipment ???
