Haha you've got the bug big time! Admire you enthusiasm out every weekend. Never commented on a video before but got say thanks you've got it just right, filming driving etc spot on. I run an almost identical set up as you ashcroft throughout, 37 trepadors etc but on a td5 110 special vehicle edition commercial except mines it bits while I carry out a full rebuild. MOG is on the wish list. Any way keep the videos coming enjoy watching them your set up and driving style is how a landy should be built and driven so many people get it wrong. You're proving your build works and works well. I'll get round to making some vids when I get up and running 👍👍👍

@@johncunningham4820 sure it wouldn't but I guess Dave tried to say that those two are a bit incomparable classes. Offroad car under 3.5 ton vs. goliath as Mog which is not a car but "truck" in 7.5 ton class (empty) + with load capacity of another ~5 tons. So, sure that Defender on kerb, making mog a bit top heavy, would not be ideal, but doable. It seems to me as one of th e1700 L series, probably U435.111 or U435.113.

@@defender90orkney9 you could be right, guess I'm seeing it from my viewpoint driving lotta rigs of sorts and most no where near as nice as the Mog , have driven my share of land rovers just a few 90's owned by friends. My friend in Germany has an old Mog , a 400 series that was an old surplus vehicle, was crazy it had a winch front and rear and all kinds of hydraulic hook ups on it, my only thought it was a utility vehicle in Germany and it sure did rattle allot, but it sure could go virtually anywhere off road, good thing it had suspension seats in it, otherwise i think i would have been visiting the chiropractor the next day, lol, his was a shorter wheel base than yours, one thing, boy did it go through diesel like crazy, that day he took me out was about 100 litres of fuel and we're only gone for the afternoon, again i guess this just average for some fun off road adventure, he's driven them many years will he was in the German military until he retired, I will watch the rest of the video and not judge the young driver, keep up the good videos

He did get through, and that's how you learn. I think the Unimog deserves major applause. That thing is LONG, and it handled this tight, twisty trail quite impressively. A Unimog with a shorter wheel base would make simple work of that trail. Both vehicles on display are amazing! In time, the Unimog driver/owner will reach that coveted status of an experienced, well seasoned driver. At the 20:18 minute mark where the Defender got hung up and struggled, the Unimog cruised through exhibiting its impressive ground clearance advantage.

@@defender90orkney9 I drove 2 different Unimog types in the German Army for 2 years and I think he did very well when he drove in such a terrain for the first time. No one is born a master. It is of course also a little harder to drive the long Unimog than the shorter and lighter Land Rover, which is why you cannot make a direct comparison between the two vehicles. When comparing Land Rover and Unimog, one would have to take the shorter version of a Unimog. In any case, both are the best vehicles in the world for such companies. Our friends in the USA can learn something from the axles and drives of these vehicles, just having a lot more horsepower is not everything.

During my army time in Germany I saw what Unimogs can do and where they can go: Places where you never thought you could go with wheels. The driver of the UNIversalen MOtorGerät makes the vehicle very bad looking while it is not bad! There are farmers who use them as tractor and plough fields with them. And they can even pull some train coaches. Also - it helps a lot if the driver leaves the vehicle from time to time to take a look first how to take a challenging section of the off-road parth...

It looks like 1700 L model, so something like U435.111 or U435.113 .. Technically it's a hybrid between heavy duty truck in 7.5 ton class mixed with tractor on equal sized tires. Check wiki for those mogs or MB Track tracktors. It's not a powerhouse, but with portal axels, heavy duty chassis, low gearing (and when he climbed that clay wall at the beginning it almost seemed it has crawl box, or "working group" gearbox) .. it has pretty modular powertrain, so it could be geared down to some 1200:1 and with hand operateable "gas" you can walk slowly alongside the track while it will humm at some 800 revs. It can handle a lot harder terrain.

Just a tip....I,ve had a U1300L for about 12 years now.....It had those same tyres on when I got it, they were new, with plenty of tread.....In the white chalky soil of Salisbury Plain they were superb, followed all the tank tracks and not once got stuck. Then I bought a farm in Eastern Poland, to which I moved taking the Unimog (yes I drove it) and the soil is Shiiite (excuse my French) it is a mix of sand and yellow clay that dries blue on the sidewalls of tyres...on that stuff those original Michelin militaries just sat with diff locks on and all four wheels spinning slowly and looking a right tit. I chose some non speed rated Site Loader Chevrons by Michelin..'Power CL' and the difference is amazing.....yes I do stuff like in the opening clips of the vid steep stacks in valleys and those Power CLs just keep on pulling...now remember they and non speed rated, (but I have driven at 60-80 kph for longish periods on them and no damage or even excessive heat build up).... but when I replace them I shall replace with Michelin speed rated Chevrons. maybe 12.00R 20 or equiv.

@listerdave1240

@@philbox4566 The chassis is also specially designed to twist to add more to the articulation. On the 404 I had it could easily add an extra 20 degrees of articulation between the front and rear axle. The bed and cab are mounted on pivots so they are not twisted when the chassis twists. Even the engine mountings are designed to take that twist into account. That was on the 404, I don't know if the newer ones also do that . The dual coils at the back are such that only the outer one is fixed at both ends. The inner one is fixed only at the top and helps the outer one with heavy loads but at the same time does not restrict articulation and will let the wheel drop as low as it wants because, being connected only at one end it can only push on the axle but not pull.

Cool video. Seeing these two vehicles is really interesting. After seeing, in another video, it take three men to lift a roof rack to the top of a 4Runner I thought, com'on do roof racks need to be that heavy? (House construction btw 2x8s 16 oc and 3/4 plywood, no where near the weight of that rack but able to support 2000 lbs/sq ft, Ever going to put 24,000 lbs on your 3' x 4' roof rack?) So any roof rack weighing more than 40 lbs ought to be able to support the weight of 3 vehicles. They can't so why do they weigh as much as something that can? Unless it's a roll bar, most off road racks are overkill and overweight. Made me wonder, what about the other direction? What's the lightest possible weight a 4x4 can be made? A much lighter vehicle could carry the same loads, but would more easily go over a lot of these obstacles.(As the Defender is doing better than the Unimog). I can see in future (gas/diesel future) the weight of the engine, drive train and size of tires, and that ring around bumper side skids etc, being tough, everything else super light weight. Why needlessly carry extra weight? From this way of thinking 90+ percent of a vehicle weight shouldn't be any higher than the tops of the wheel wells. (all this is wild ass guessing and thinking out loud. So in most of this I'm probably wrong, where I'm not wrong, I think is worth thinking about.) Look at camper shells, pop-ups and roof top tents - almost all far heavier than they need to be. Put a 10 lb tent on top of a vehicle and somehow it now weighs 100-200 lbs. (the heavy parts can be replaced with 1/4" plywood with some ribs, or two layers of 2 x 3mm with rib web in between) Another way of looking at this problem is we have these amazing off road vehicles but when they get stuck the drivers get out and walk (easily walk) all over and around the problem. What's the big difference between a man and his truck? The truck can carry a lot more, it can be much faster, and what enables these makes it heavier, etc.. which affects or limits some of it's versatility - but I think perhaps way more than it should. In about 1970, in the States, I had a Matchbox Unimog, no other information. No other information available anywhere. It was a very neat looking puzzle. Now with the internet.

Well with some background in both camps, I've had my Unimog suddenly sink in apparent blamanche, but still self-extract itself and in standard form it has huge ground clearance and full diff locks and a basic wading depth of I think 1.2m, which I've never much more than half exploited in some serious river crossings that I wouldn't have tried in a Defender. However, the pedestrian speed Unimog here needed to drive a bit more aggressively and yes it has Hutchinson bead lock rims to allow some tyre deflation with no risk of debeading. The tricked Defender meanwhile had a more experienced and bolder driver with lowered tyre pressure and he was looking carefully at his line and he applied some more momentum, but did get hung up on rocks a bit. Land Rovers are great and clearly better on narrow tracks and less prone to capsize than say Pinzgauers. OEM proper difflocks is a major omission in Land Rovers however, seemingly rectified on this one. I have also done some severe and steep tracks in Thailand in rented Suzuki jeeps that are extremely nimble and much easier to manhandle out of holes than Land Rovers or Unimogs! Mog has also made my G Wagen irrelevant despite huge G capability and another Defender (300 TDI) is on my wish list, after having had an early 200 TDI in the 1990's and wanting to add to my presently 'resting' Series One owned for 34 years. So, no right answers but good fun had by all !

You certainly know your stuff sir, and I second pretty much all your comments here. I have limited experience with either type (and the Mog I drove a few times was a 404), but with the exception of sand dunes/high speed stuff, the Mog is a superior offroad machine. It will go anywhere it can fit.

A second U2150 project with factory CTIS is now in progress. Huge satisfaction confidently crossing raging rivers and emerging over mountain passes in blizzards, just me and the snow plough moving.....Roll on the next chapter. It's not a problem for a stock Unimog to beat a even modified defender. The MOG has everything you need from factory. Lockers all around, reduction portal axles, capable of high flexing. It has bigger tires, more ground clearance and can drive above obstacles which are not overdrivable for the defender. The only thing to modify you need are the tires. Wider low pressure tractor style tires fit very well on the Unimog. Then, there is nearly nothing, you need to improve.

@@the_retag Ohoh, ok it has the possibility to plow, but for heavy duty plowing, it's the wrong choice. There have been people, who did it, but the wear is too great. Mercedes herself says, it's not designed for heavy plowing. It's not comparable to a farm tractor in structural strength. Mercedes says, yes, plowing is possible, but in heavy duty, it's not recommended.

@@defender90orkney9 Still didn't air down the mog anywhere near comparable to the defender. I don't have bead lockers on my mog, so 30 psi is about as low as I can safely go with mine. This mog in the video appears to have bead lockers, so he could have gone even lower than that. You can see at 40 psi there is hardly any sidewall flex on the mog tires compared to the defenders tires which seem to just swallow the hard edges and grab onto the rocks and bumps with that low pressure. Several times it looked like the mog driver was afraid to continue giving it the beans to get over the hump he was stuck on. Did he recently acquire this mog? Looks like a 1300L ex military mog. These longer wheelbase mogs are not quite as good off road as the shorter wheelbase models, but this trail should have been no problem with the right tire pressure either way.
