Range Rover v Land Cruiser off-road let’s gooooo!!
Mat’s rolled up to the off-road course in a V8-powered Toyota Land Cruiser, and he’s about to see if it has what it takes to defeat the luxurious new Range Rover!
So let’s see how the two compare. Starting with the Toyota, it’s packing a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 diesel under the bonnet, which is good for 272hp and 650Nm. It comes with a number of off-road features such as low-range mode and a central locking diff, and it weighs in at 2,620kg. It’s not sold in the UK anymore, but if you wanted to pick one up it would cost you around £30,000.
Then we have the Range Rover. It houses a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol up top which is good for 530hp and 750Nm. It’s a bit lighter than the Land Cruiser, tipping the scales at 2,510kg, and it’s also packed with a whole load of tech to help it out off-road. It’s SO much more expensive though, coming in at £138,000!!
So what do you think - does the Land Cruiser stand a chance? Or will the super-expensive Range Rover snatch it? LET’S FIND OUT!

When I lived in East Africa [Kenya] in the 1970s and early 1980s (my dad was with the Flying Doctor Service) there were lots of Land Rovers, very few Range Rovers, and countless Toyotas. The Land Rovers were much-loved by expat Brits and did pretty well; they were relatively simple, old-school machines and survived the often horrendous conditions if treated with respect. Parts were cheap, the basic vehicles were rugged and durable, and servicing and repairing could be carried out by any competent mechanic. Range Rovers were expensive and rare and so were only ever seen in towns and cities ferrying government officials between fancy hotels. They were too precious to be hammered off road, although the great rally driver Rob Collinge used Range Rovers in the Safari. He had to completely rebuild them, though, to cope with the extreme conditions. The Land Cruisers were tremendous. Tough, reliable, and virtually unstoppable. Unlike the Land Rovers they were less like comfy tractors and more like regular cars, so they not only coped with the bush (a.k.a. 'MAMOBA' - Miles And Miles Of Bloody Africa'), but were equally at home in towns and cities. They were so good that they were taken for granted, and there's no better recommendation for a vehicle in a challenging environment. The Land Rovers responded well to careful treatment and sensible maintenance schedules; the Land Cruisers just worked, no matter how badly they were abused. I've got no experience of modern versions of either vehicle, but I'm willing to bet that they're both hell to work on. That's not important if they function perfectly all the time, but... When you're stranded in the middle of nowhere with a dashboard warning message that says 'ECU error - Gearbox Mode 4 Interface Malfunction; Contact Service Centre', you want to be able to put things right with a jack, a stick, a screwdriver, and a hammer. You need a car with a cast-iron reputation, and the Toyota's proved itself all over the world for decades. In my experience, a super-sophisticated Land (or Range) Rover MIGHT work flawlessly, but then again, it might not. And that's when you stop caring about trick diffs and air suspension and air-conditioned shiatsu massage seats and wish you'd bought something that just ruddy-well WORKED. If I were planning a trip to somewhere remote, I'd take the Land Cruiser. If I were an English farmer doing nothing more dodgy than checking fields of spuds, I'd probably still choose the Toyota. Better reputation. Better value for money. Your opinion may vary...😁

I feel I'm in an emperor's clothes universe questioning why I should complain that vehicles are now such a mass of unfathomable gubbings that you have little chance of easy wilderness repairs. So you are better either in something old and simple or new and reliable. Or both, and a 1990s W460 Diesel G Wagen is probably the ultimate weapon of choice.

Yo argument sounds mo like someone comparing one individual flying in a private jet from Australia to New Zealand n the other flying economy. Trust me! U both get there but I can guarantee u the experience is not even close. U dig?? Bottom line, there is a very good reason y the range costs 4 times that of the Toyota. But the bummer here is most Range Rover owners live in cities were mo than half of the amenities of the vehicle never get applied/explored. The vehicle is mo of a status symbol.

In the UK the RR is far preferred due to its unmatched ability to get across wet grass, sticky mud, and through deep farm track ruts and uneven ground, especially when towing trailers. These are the predominant problems here. The RR's tight turning circle is a godsend when negotiating narrow woodland tracks with a farm trailer. Also, the rising and lowering suspension makes putting trailers on the tow hitch far easier. Getting stuck in the mud in the UK is seldom life threatening except for emergency services, but it is a nuisance to have to get the tractor out. So RR's save a lot of time and hassle, and they can also double up as a great motorway cruiser and are fine in town too which saves having to buy a second car. In the UK there is always a Landrover specialist nearby to fix things within a few hours, so the reliability issue is minor. Lastly cost. Excellent secondhand diesel RR Sports are plentiful and cheap as chips in the UK, making them perhaps the most economical and capable 4WD farm transport. This is why most UK country folk have some sort of Landrover.

Hi Matt, enjoyed seeing the 4 by 4 joust between these two cars. Would be interesting to explore further; such as how each model/engine system copes with varying qualities of fuel, how easy are they to get competently serviced around the globe. Targeting the luxury market with a high spec system that on paper performs very well, a high performance engine that is very sensitive to varying fuel quality, dependent upon top notch servicing, good traction control but how well do they do in the real world. One of these car manufacturers made (sadly in my view) a decision a while ago to focus on the high end market share at the expense of the broader market with more mass appeal. The result; around the world and outside of modern cities of the developed world, one of these makes is much easier to maintain and readily repair than the other one. And when you're remote or in the middle of the desert you have enough to worry about as it is. London to Cape Town, now that would put them through their paces?

Dude. Seriously. Get over it. It’s just for fun. I suppose you think the low profile tyres on the Range Rover help it ? The Rangie has amazing tech. It’s a huge help. The ride being IFS and IRS suspension will mean it will handle better on bumps and cornering. That being said. Would I take a Range Rover on a serious expedition ? Hhhmmm. I think not. While they are clearly a more refined vehicle I wouldn’t trust it like a Landcruiser. My 2 cents is. The range is far superior but if reliability is what you’re after I’d go the cruiser with twin lockers every day.

I spend 99% of my time in outback Australia and have seen more LC's on the back of flat beds than I've had breakfasts. That may well be because there are thousands of them. In fact, i think its something like 1 MILLION of them have been sold in Australia over the years. There are so many of them, not because they are particularly reliable .. but because Toyota does MASSIVE lease deals with mining companies .. hence Toyota Service Centres on just about every street corner. Toyota certainly beats LR hands down on the number of service centres. Check with ANY Landcruiser service centre and you will find that they are booked out doing repairs to these 'reliable' 4x4's. As far as repairs go, LR is possibly cheaper for repairs than Toyota .. especially when you consider that most LR owners do repairs themselves. There is also a FAR MORE 'social' aspect around LR owners, clubs and forums .. a tremendous amount of help out there from the multitude of LR forums in particular. Where are the Landcruiser forums? Guy in his 200 Series LC opposite me just had his radiator replaced .. a $2,000 job .. due to some 'plastic' part failure and quite a common fault apparently. The fact is BOTH Land Rover and Toyota are NOT as reliable as they used to be years ago, but as far as comfort goes, LR are light years ahead of any LC. If you want to question Land Rover's 'pedigree' .. just look up 'Camel Trophy' on KZbin. Please direct me to the Toyota's 'equivalent'.

Having owned a FJ80 4.2 TD Landcruiser and currently a Range Rover, The LC was slightly better off road, the electronics help in the RR and having 3 locking diffs on the LC really made it a very capable off roader. My current RR has centre and rear diff locks and coupled with the traction control for the front wheels make off-roading effortless, where the LC you had to take a lot more care with how you drove it. The choice between a Toyota Land Cruiser and a Land Rover depends on various factors, including personal preferences, specific needs, and usage requirements. Both vehicles are renowned for their off-road capabilities and have their own distinct features. Here are some points to consider: Toyota Land Cruiser: Reliability: Toyota vehicles, including the Land Cruiser, have a reputation for being incredibly reliable and durable. Off-road performance: The Land Cruiser is known for its exceptional off-road capabilities, with advanced features like a robust four-wheel-drive system, solid axle suspension, and excellent ground clearance. Resale value: Land Cruisers tend to retain their value well over time, making them a good investment. Land Rover: Luxury and refinement: Land Rovers, particularly models like the Range Rover, offer luxurious interiors, premium materials, and advanced comfort features. Off-road prowess: Land Rovers have a strong off-road heritage and are equipped with sophisticated technologies, such as Terrain Response systems, which optimize the vehicle's performance on different surfaces. Styling: Land Rover vehicles often feature distinctive and eye-catching designs, combining elegance and ruggedness. Ultimately, the "better" choice depends on your priorities. If you prioritize reliability and durability, the Land Cruiser may be a suitable option. If you value luxury, refinement, and advanced technology, a Land Rover might be more appealing. It's advisable to test drive both vehicles, research their features, and consider your specific needs before making a decision.

Such a good program thank you! The Old Land Cruiser looks like an early 1990's vehicle, it looks like a Japanese vehicle from prior to Japan went into its lost, now coming up to 4 decades. The "Landie" as we call it here in New Zealand is still a Legend! The name "Landie" was once owned by Land Rover for 2-3 Decades and then the Great Brand Toyota took over the affectionate name "Landie" and showcased brilliant Japanese Engineering at its best! It was great in the Southern Alps, McKenzie Country, getting up to the Ski fields, bush tracks hunting etc but it has become too expensive, both these vehicles have been replaced here in New Zealand by the Ford Ranger. Now we can buy 3 Ford Rangers for the price of a Toyota Landcruiser and yes the Ford Ranger is reliable as its Toyota! There is nothing like the original Jeep, and then the Aluminum Land Rover. On Farms in NZ, when the Land Rover's engine crapped out as it did relatively early in its life Cockies (Farmers) here would drop in a GM Holden, or Ford Straight Six Engine and the old beast would go on forever, many are still going and valued on Farms. Japan is now an expensive place to make things, but its Brands always stand for Quality. Toyota will come back as long as Japan only makes top Quality Products which I expect them to do!

Campfire Story Time***I had an acquaintance pick up a new Disco 4 a few days before we went to The Tip of Cape York, via Old Telegraph Track, Gunshot and Pine /Cockatoo Creeks. On the way home we did the Gold Fields/Palmer River. I had a 3 yrs old Jeep Turbo Diesel Cherokee. I was confident BUT didn’t follow him everywhere, it was too difficult !! Disco beat Jeep Turbo. Then I broke my suspension on another stretch home (33 million ruts in a row) and if I had a Toyota, it would have been ask anywhere, I mean even riders on horseback and school kids on a bus knew where to get a Toyota parts/bolts/nuts. Jeep had to send the order to Melbourne, who contacted Singapore who flew the part to Darwin via Melbourne, put it first on a bus (local dealer knowledge), then left it at a petrol station (1/2 a day drive one way) closest to my location for a man on a horse to go and collect, then "no one wanted to fix a Jeep" (never had the tools) so there is more to lesser capable Toyotas and Parts Availability, than simply Range Rover is better, and every 4wd can break down on these roads. My Jeep also went into "limp home mode" 500klms from the closest dealer, which Jeep demanded I take the car? I took it to a local home base electronics and Tv repairer, and demanded Jeep give him the instructions to fix the circuit board, they always know about these problems. The disable device sits above the rear view mirror, I had an ariel fitted which leaked, at first Jeep wouldn’t even tell us where the immobiliser was located to fix it, I had family in 4 states which didn’t help in any of these circumstances, other than to harass Jeep from a nearby location, not the middle of a desert. While you do these important tests, think about what to do in these circumstances. In the desert at Boorooloola my adjustment pulley bearing ceased and broke/fried my fan belt. Again, Jeep didn’t have a single bearing in Australia ad again, Singapore via Melbourne via Darwin and the goose shuttle to caravan park. No buses, Postal service once a week and 1/2 day drive to Service Station where Postman goes once a week to collect mail and can be persuaded to pick up foreign orders. The take away from my novel is Toyota has parts stashed everywhere, I even got a bolt for a shock absorber in a wreck in a paddock at Bramwell Station to get me going same day, it was a Toyota Part, literally everywhere in deserts and small towns who have been using them and leaving them in the bush since Toyota made a 4wd and sold it in Australia over half a century ago, Toyota grave yards everywhere around Australia. Defiantly no Jeep bone yard anywhere and I bet my left testicle Range Rover are the same for parts as Jeep off road. You might get anywhere you want to go, but Toyota, as less spectacular off road as we just witnessed here, as they were, will still bring you home all day every day. Toyota still relying on old models and old days reputation, it is time they invested in the next generation of hybrid/electric in a positive way, not just the old, if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it , half a century on, nothing new from Toyota in whole scheme of things. Oh, ps Bramwell Station is the most northerly cattle station in Australia and back then had zero Tourist support. They did have some shipping containers with cots, long drop toilets and a BBQ with sausages for weary travellers, because they liked to hear about our struggles around the firepit which is their everyday driving. Dont eat too many sausages, because they allocate two per person and ration them, they have to travel hundreds of kilometers to get supplies, the ice melts too quick and meat gets smelly before getting back to base. When I ws there it was 100% free hospitality, never take without leaving a deposit, city people dont even think, that sausage had a big jouremy and they watched us eat them like Pavlovs dog.

Own them both. A 2017 LC and new rangie. LC is still the real deal. RR already been to the shop twice. Sigh 😢somethings never change. LC stellar as ever and escalating in price in the USA monthly ❤

I've owned both these identical cars and the RR is junk in comparison. Also I think Matt fudges these offroad vids as the RR I just got rid off last year couldn't even get down the same routes as my old Grand Vitara could around 2006-2008. It's already been well proven that LC are better offroad buy Matt is happy to shill out to LR he's done it before too.

I've been here on tixover quarry and I could not go up the axle twister bit without the rear diff lock on, it does make a massive difference. My car only has 218mm clearance so momentum wasn't an option. It was quite muddy/icy that day and I was running on road tyres though. Videos on my channel for anyone interested in seeing the massive difference a rear diff lock does for crappy offroad drivers. :)

Without a doubt I am impressed with the Range, since it has low profile - all season tires. Of course, the land cruiser will go the distance and if there is anything wrong it will be easily fixable (it is repair friendly).

An advertising campaign for Landrover here in Australia stated that 80% of Landrovers ever built are still on the road, the common response over here was "that's where the owners left them when they broke down", in this country LR have an appalling reputation for unreliability. Landcruisers would outsell L/R by 20 -1 or more over here.

@@geoffbell166 it depends. If those who lease it will have this problem since that suv requires regular maintenance a lot can go wrong if delayed. Have atleast 40-50k for maintenance and you will be good to go for the next 5-7 years or so. N experience will be something land cruiser can never match. But again if you dont have extra 50k reserved then do not buy it. If you plan not to get it regularly it will. Lc is for longevity with less dollars and rover is for extreme everything including offroad capability and extremely good even better than a rolls royce cullinan sound system(option 29 speaker or 35 on the new one). Name me a car of that caliber returning a mileage of 34mpg. Also l405 has a range of 1400+km on a single fill (104 capacity x 14.4kmpl)

1979 my father got the first Land Cruiser, in Tanzania. I've had one or a Hilux ever since. On my 5th cruiser now. Can't even think of changing. If it's in an expensive country, I travel a lot, I just get a Hilux otherwise a cruiser. My current one is 5.7 V8 Cruiser, that's going to really give this RR a tough time if Matt used it.
