It's called the Mid Atlantic accent. It was standardized in broadcasts and people who appeared on TV and radio were trained to speak that way for clarity and a sense of 'sophistication' because it's a blend of British and American accents. After WW2 it fell out of fashion because it had a lot of classicism associated with it, since most people trained to speak in that accent attended posh acting schools or finishing schools etc.
