It's very enjoyable to see footage of UP 3985 now that it is no longer apart of the UP rr special heritage steam roster, the 3985 was exciting to observe at high speed operation throughout the USA. I am very glad that big boy locomotive 4014 made a return to service operation back in 2019, both the 4014 and 3985 are interesting to observe in action as representative examples of UP rr articulated steam power.

Shot photos the next day as she went to Gorham. If we'd have known it was her last outing, we'd have shot more video on the Illinois run. Fortunately, two of the gang followed her all the way back to Cheyenne.

Smoke lifter. Helps lift the smoke past the cab, same function as the "elephant ears" on the UP 844. (And UP 3977)

Sad this awesome Union Pacific steam engine #3985 will never operate again but hey now we’ve got the Big Boy steam engine Union Pacific 4014 in its place so that’ll be equally as neat to see although its doubtful the Union Pacific 4014 will ever come to visit here in Saint Louis Missouri anytime soon.

Everyone said a 4000 would never operate again too. I'm hopeful they'll keep 3985 on the active roster and run it on occasion. If they decide not to, they owe no apologies to anyone. The 844 is magnificent on its own--and damned near got scrapped, along with so many other fine machines. They can cut the entire program and cut up the remaining locomotives whenever they want to. Personally, I'm only grateful that any steam power was spared, much less made operational.

We need to give acknowledgment to the crew who restored 3985 back to operating condition after rusting in a parking lot for years. If it wasn’t for their time & dedication, there wouldn’t have been a parts source to get the Big Boy operational.

Currently inside the UP steam house, UP will repair the engine after the Big Boy is finished.
