August 14th 1992, and the Union Pacific 3895 Challenger is traveling from Fort Worth to Navasota, Texas for the 1992 Republican National Convention in Houston, Texas. This video was shot with SVHS camcorder. Enjoy the live steam action, pacing shots and a small piece of history. Thanks to the Union Pacific RR for supporting the operation of steam engines, and allowing future generations to enjoy these fine locomotives.

You Sir are my Hero. I must've been at school during this 3985 run through Navasota. I saw it pass through in the mid 90s.

Correction! I did see 3985 this year but no pictures. I remember being outside with my 2 cousins at our Grandparents home and hearing an cool “Horn” whistle lol Only picture I have is in my mind. Going to maybe sketch what my 7 year old eyes saw that day.

I rode this trip, and still have my punched ticket and paperwork all framed up.

10:18 Imagine if all of the 2014-2022 Olympic skaters could all ride behind the 3985 while pacing after them like Meryl Davis, Charlie White, Jason Brown, Marissa Castelli, Ashley Wagner, Gracie Gold, Polina Edmunds, Maia and Alex Shibutani, Jeremy Abbott and Everybody else, the whole kit and kaboodle!!!!! All in the passenger car behind the 3985 leading a Train!!!!!

I can imagine The Big Boy sounding like the Challenger in the 1980s and 90s.

Did this go thru Dallas Reunion Station via TPRR? I saw it at Reunion on a Friday, and we chased thru east Texas as far as Mineola, Saturday a.m., where it stopped for a short layover.. Great pacing, BTW. Love that thick black smoke. Did he hit 70? *****

On Friday and Saturday it traveled the old Texas & Pacific RR Tracks. A lot of 55 and 60 but if they hit 70 is was away from the HWY, looking at the timetable probably stayed under 65 mph.

3985 Union Pacific looks more like astrotrain on Generation 1 of the transformers the triple-changer that went from the space shuttle to a Steam locomotive like the 3985

Is it just me or have Photo Run-bys on Class 1 Excursion become a thing of the past. Norfolk Southern has stopped doing Photo Run-bys and I don't think I have seen 844 do any in recent years as well. I know that many Tourist Railways still do them and a handful of Class 2 Railroads have allowed them (such as the case with Milwaukee Road 261 back in October) but I have yet to see any videos of the big names in Steam, The Union Pacific Railroad and the Norfolk Southern Corp., do any Photo Run-bys. Also nice Street Running at 13:16.

I really do not know... I have not had the opportunity to get out and chase trains for several years due to work and travel. But I would guess that there is an insurance issue.

This is part 2 of a 6 part video. On the segment from Fort Worth to Dallas #3985 struck a trespasser that incident has been edited out of my video.

Steve Lee was all about putting on a good show. When he saw cameras, he would make smoke for the audience, but when traveling on track away from the roads he would run her clean... really made it hard to know if you were catching up or falling behind for the next pacing or runby shot. Neil

Neil Dahl. That does make sense. I work and volunteer for my local scenic railroad. We do the same thing. People do like to watch the exhaust. For a tourist and scenic railroad that's what people come to see. I always wanted to work on a main line steam locomotive like J611 or 844. It's the holy grail and epitome of railroading. Getting in is the hard part. You have to be the best and have a bachelors degree and have at least 30 years of experience before they even interview you to step in their shops.

That engine smokes 80 cigs a day, and the poor engine crew, death by passive oily smoke
