This is one section of a long production on UP in WWII and into the diesel era. These scenes were filmed by the late George Barnes and the late John Petros. For more on the rest of the video see below.
Visit eight states and see America’s original line that helped build the west. Filmed by 14 different people over decades. Learn about E. H. Harriman’s dramatic life and how he eventually put an empire together that resembles today’s merged UP line. Follow the Harriman 1900 era to modern times from the phase out of steam to first and second generation diesels. The focal period is from 1960 to 1980 with the onslaught of rail mergers. See steam GP9s, E and F-units, Turbines, DD35, DD40s, U50s, SD24 and SD45s and many others with passenger and freights.

I was born into UP and I am the 4th generation Up employee. I love the Turbines and U-50s the most.

3804 was not purchased from N&W. It was a CSA-1 Challenger (4-6-6-4) designed & purchased new by UP. The locomotives purchased from N&W were Y3 (2-8-8-2) mallets numbered in the 3500 series.

Man, if you were lucky enough when you saw these giant yellow units with red stripes etc you’d been lucky and my friends would’ve liked if it they were born in that era plus my friends saw there was no ALCo Century 855 and yes they were not in there as although they were made in July 1964 and retired in August 1970 and all have since been scrapped since 1971-2 the same year when my mother was born but seriously I would’ve liked if ALCo would’ve made them better as they sucked horrible but the only things that keeps the giant motive power alive are 2 GTEL 8500 Horsepower and the DDA40X including the famous 6936 but hopefully we get a new build or replica of these fallen flags diesels that didn’t make it out.
