Any railfan worth their salt will have a radio scanner (it isn't illegal to listen in to radio transmissions as long as they aren't, say, heavily-encrypted military traffic that you somehow acquired a key for) to monitor local activity. They'll learn train symbols. For example, a Z train is a high-priority mail train that may or may not have your Amazon shipment in one of the containers or trailers aboard. This train likely has a special symbol to denote its special cargo.
