Ulster Unionist politician Danny Kennedy appeared on the BBC to complain about this party not doing well at the local elections in Northern Ireland, but instead of blaming the UUP, he attacked Sinn Féin for doing so well.

@@atverde Until the 1970s the majority of Catholics in NI had NO vote in local elections. This was brought about by only letting rate payers vote in local elections. Catholics were discrimated against in social housing and had to rent private housing. If you rented private housing you did not pay rates and did not get a vote. The property owner paid the rates. Council housing tenants paid rates and got to vote in local elections. I'm sure Mr Kennedy would like to return to those 'good old days '.

I would bet that Danny never complained when the Unionists were lawfully able to gerrymander electoral boundaries and deny nationalists votes to ensure a never ending Unionist majority. Nationalists in Derry were 'legally' disbarred from voting while no Unionist was and the Unionist mayor had no less than forty eight votes to cast. It is just wonderful to see them lose their artificial majority forever.

@newbris
@newbris Жыл бұрын
On what grounds were they disbarred?
@Patmofar
@Patmofar Жыл бұрын
@@newbris To be allowed to vote you had to be a rate payer which meant either owning a house or having a council house and the Unionist councils would never give a council house to a catholic family forcing them to rent privately. In the property they rented the rate payer was the landlord which meant that he had a vote for his own house and another for his/her rental property and his wife also had two votes as did any adult children and the catholic tenants had no vote. The same Unionist dominated councils made it practically impossible for a catholic to own a private property and the banks who employed protestants exclusively meant that they would never be offered a mortgage simply because they were catholic. These people were discriminated against on so many levels that the mind boggles. And as I have said Danny had no problem with that, he never complained and the word 'inclusivity' did not exist in his dictionary then. To illustrate just how bad the discrimination was, the british army parachute regiment had no problem mass murdering these people when they dared to march for civil rights including the right to vote. They massacred 14 unarmed and innocent marchers and injured a further 12 with the total connivance of the corrupt, protestant only police force, the RUC, in Derry in 1972. The same parachute regiment also murdered 10 people over a thirty six hour period the year before in Ballymurphy in Belfast again with RUC connivance. This police force was so corrupt and bigoted that it could not be reformed and had to be disbanded eventually. Two different British Prime Ministers, Cameron and Johnson, have been forced to publicly apologise for the British army parachute regiment's atrocities in recent times. And it is only now that Danny and people like him who are fast fading into insignificance suddenly have a problem, and he honestly thinks that democracy should be abolished to restore the 'good old days' of gerrymandered majority Unionism for them. Again it is simply wonderful to see their downfall.

Protestants have been poorly represented, first by uup, more recently by dup. Perhaps the warning sign with any party useing the provincial name of ulster in its title, is these party's denial of partition of ulster. Some republicans also, focus on the partition of ireland willfully ignoring the partition if ulster. Perhaps if mr Kennedy knew more about his unionist people in monaghan cavan and donegal he could increase unionist representation in a united ulster. @@geoffpoole483 I'd go even further and say if it wasn't for the gerrymandering of the political system in Derry then bloody Sunday would never have happened, as one of the civil rights movement's primary demands was one vote per person. The political framework of NI has always been favoured towards the unionist persuasion and it has end up with people like him who've had it all their own way for so long firmly believing that equality for all communities is a huge injustice being done to them.

He's UUP, not DUP, but the point stands-he's as dumb as a box of rocks. Forget about the history of sectarian gerrymandering, multiple votes for prods and voter suppression-this guy simply can't grasp democracy. The people with most votes win. At it's best, this guy thinks politics is like a primary school sports day and everyone gets a prize. More likely, his (microcephalic) brain can't cope with the idea of a Catholic FM and a Catholic majority in N.Ireland, and he thinks mere details like what the voters have voted for can be ignored. Most Brits will breathe a sigh of relief when we can offload idiots like him into a united Ireland.

Out of the 50 councillors, there this election, one is "Nationalist" (SDLP) and the UUP took 8 seats (with DUP taking 14). I assume that Danny Kennedy thinks that this is unfair, and that, maybe, the UUP should do something to share more seats with Nationalists there???
