GULL PERCH FLYER

Күн бұрын

Amy Johnson became the most famous flyer of the 20th century when she became the first lady to fly from England to Australia in May 1930.
I have compiled some very rare footage of Amy flying her De Havilland Gipsy Moth which she purchased for £600 to embark on the flight to Australia.
I have also included very interesting audio of Amy describing her flight to Australia.
There is also rare footage of Amy Gliding at Long Mynd Shropshire in 1936.
Finally in conclusion footage of the film Amy starred in with her husband Jim Mollison when they land in a field having run out of fuel, the locals crowd around and enjoy a quick flight around the patch in Amy's Gipsy Moth 'Jason III'

Back in 2017 I sculpted a miniature to be sold by Hull museum's of Amy Johnson. They forgot to take them to the Amy Johnson weekend, and complained that they hadn't sold many. So we gave the second set of casting to a local primary school for their Amy Johnson week . Then went back to our day jobs of producing historical miniatures.

Hello Chris. So sad that with all the challenges Amy endured and beat in her exploits that she should end her life in rather a mysterious manner. Wonderful footage Chris . Thanks

Not a mystery, just one of many Uk non combat losses due to navigation mistakes in poor weather. There always was a pressure placed on them to try and get deliveries flown. Sadly she was used to pushing on more in hope. Record breaking was very hard in under financed efforts .

From what I understand, as an ATA pilot she insisted on flying south for personal reasons, despite the hesitation of colleagues over the weather. Her Oxford, with low cloud and the London balloon barrage, ran out of fuel. and she parachuted into the Thames estuary. just behind a convoy. An olympic swimmer dived in to rescue her but her shrouds caught in a ship's propellor and she drowned.

A local girl to me. The street around the corner is named Amy Johnson Avenue. At Sewerby Hall on the cliff top, a museum of her gifts, trophies and her flight bag (from the crash) is on display.

Very nice film. I went to Croydon airport for the anniversary of her flight in 1980. If i remember they had a replica plane there and a Dragon repide plus a couple of more.

That was really great! As an American I had never heard of Amy Johnson...until the 1976 song FLYING SORCERY by Al Stewart, the song is on youtube. I would wager that most Americans have never even heard of Amelia Earhart, so don't feel too bad. How quickly we forget. Thanks for the post and I look forward to the later years.
