If you listen to the lyrics, you 'll hear, between the lines, that she and Billy Joe had a stillborn baby, in secret. They threw it into the river, to keep it from public knowledge. Billy Joe was so heartbroken that he jumped into the river too. She wasn't eating because she lost Billy Joe. There is so much meaning,just below the surface of this song, I could probably write a book about it. 😢❤

Not sure Billy Joel had anything to do with this. He is a singer (terrible in his own right), but Billy Joe was her boyfriend who got drunk and engaged with other men. Think Sodom and Gomorrah. Poor old Billy Joel being drug into this.

You may be able to find clips of the movie to give you context. You didnt speak of such things back then. Out of wedlock pregnancy and sodomy were not talked about.
