If the skin tone is off, it's very likely the whole color of the image is off. Use skin tone to adjust the overall base grade, especially if you didn't use a gray car/ and or white balance on set. (which you kinda covered at the end) And don't use the master control. Use temperature slider instead.

Very good thanks! I would have one question. If you add any LUT after you have defined the colour wheel mask for the skin tones then the LUT changes the skin tone colours again. Do you know any way to "protect" the colour wheel mask then the LUT would not effect for it at all? I think it was possible at least with the Resolve nodes.
@dylanjohndickerson4 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! So adding a LUT after you adjust the base skin tones of your subject is going to introduce whole different colors into the shot. I'd recommend adding a LUT first, then adding a color mask to make the adjustments to your subject's skin.

amazing! videos that are posted on reddit are usually stuff i've seen 1000 times alreay, but this is a tip that i definitely didn't know about. Question. how easy is it to copy to clips of the same scene? Is it just a simple copy over, or do i have to repeat the process?
@dylanjohndickerson4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Miguel! I'll try to keep the ones coming that are novel in some way. I am going to start doing some more basic tutorials for the beginners in the upcoming weeks though. Usually it's just a simple copy, depending on if the lighting in the other shots are not drastically different. Just press 'command c' to copy, and then 'command-shift-v' on the clips you're looking to past the effect on. If you see a clip needs adjustment you can always tune it up after adding that base copy on. You could also do all of the adjustments on an adjustment layer, and then if you need to tune up a shot more than another just cut the adjustment layer over that particular clip and make your adjustment. I usually do the former though.

3:43 Just wondering why you used Master instead of Midtones? I realise you said ALL of your skin tone was pretty off colour but how much of a difference would adjusting Midtones be/affecting/not affecting none skin areas?
@dylanjohndickerson4 жыл бұрын
Since we made a mask of our skin tones, using the master slider will help you to change all of the skin color back to some accuracy. By using the mid tones, you’re just adjusting a portion of the skin color and you may be left with the darker portions an off color and the highlights an off color from what you’re trying to correct to. You can use the mid tones wheel when a mask is made in some instances, but the majority of the time the master wheel is going to provide a better result when a mask is applied.

Using the master wheel for this instead of hue vs hue is a horrible idea. You will never get a straight uniform hue line. Plus that's really overstretching the information on the center which could cause banding artifacts on unsaturated areas like highlights, grays, and blacks, especially in 8bit. Your skin just went from the original white/gray center point, to a drastic new location on low saturated areas, to curving a bit to reds in the mid saturation, then curving back to yellow on the most saturated areas of your skin. That's why your skin line looks more like a snake. Really, just use hue vs hue

Agreed! This video is 2 years old. Creating a color mask is definitely not the best way to go about it. I'll make an updated video sometime soon.
