Seriously, this episode looked and sounded like garbage except for like the five seconds of decent animation and brief usage of space. It's still fucking SAO, the writing is still shit, the animation is still shit, the voice acting is still mediocre, the character designs might be the worst in the franchise, and of course everything still looks bland and sterile as fuck. The first episode of the original series was better than this and if either are supposed to be it's high points then holy fuck this franchise needs to die.

Being able to choose your next calling after completing the one you're given doesn't actually change anything on the argument that most callings can't be completed at all. Even if they could, there's no reason to believe helping them complete their calling would result in them helping Kirito, whereas Eugeo had three episodes to establish that he is a good choice. I'm pretty sure the reason Kirito was able to cut off the goblin's arm and the goblin was unable to cut through Eugeo, which doesn't seen to make sense at first, was because he used a sword skill and the goblin did not. The conversation between half-dead Eugeo and Kirito was an overdramatization. Yeah, it was not done very well, but there have been worse ones. I am aware this is not really a good argument, but I feel that scene was treated more harshly than neccessary. I don't see any problem with durability transfer. Sure it is convenient, but it still makes sense. We are still learning what is possible with magic. And although Selka says it's a forbidden and dangerous art, it doesn't feel that we are meant to believe this will result in something bad happening right now, especially since Eugeo is dying and this looks like it will save his life. She's just explaining the mechanics of how it works and how overuse of it could potentially lead to death, possibly because it'll be used later and they need to set it up before so it doesn't feel like an asspull. Alice's soul appearing suddenly is ridiculous. The conversation between Kirito and Selka was as dumb as Digi made it out to be. I think it was supposed to be character development for her, but even then it was horrible. Bad scene. Eugeo scene with Selka was character development for Eugeo. Until now he was ashamed of not helping Alice when she was captured, and now he finally found the courage and hope to be able to rectify his mistakes, and that is shown in him being able to face Selka again, when before he couldn't look her in the eye. This could certainly have been done better, but I am not sure they'd be able to without putting in more episodes. It's not as if this already doesn't have enough elements that it needs to explain to put in more character development, but yeah bad character development. Still better than past seasons though. My gripe with this is that they didn't take more time to cut the tree, and that they made the first sword slash too cool. Well, considering the sword skill was able to slice off the goblin's arm easily enough, perhaps it was made to reinform the viewer of the power of sword skills in this world, or the power of the ice sword, which we know is overpowered. Though I am not sure of this, and it might seen like I am reaching too far here, so not sure about it at all. Still, I think it would've been better with a one or two week montage, and the sword skill didn't need to be shown as this powerful. In any case there was a lot less exposition trough dialogue recently.

The novel actually explain why suddenly they can use the sword. Because they killed some goblin it increase their Object Control Authority(?) above the sword's Priority Class 45. And if I'm right the sword have much higher Priority Class than the axe so it deals a lot more damage to the tree. Oh Priority Class is basically the Strength stats of that object and Object Control Authority is basically your strength stats.

Technically Eugeo gains a lot of STR from the goblin incident and he was taught by Kirito. Even then his skill is still on the very basic level where he can only do Horizontal(Sword Skill in the ending of the first episode of SAO)

Pro-tip: Kirito's injury actually *never* affected his ability to lift his sword, because it was his *left* shoulder that was injured. He struggled to lift the sword because he was paralyzed by shock and fear. I enjoyed your deep analysis of the mechanics and physics of the fight, but prejudice can make you miss some big details.

If you noticed during the episode, the whole village acted very surprised that he chose that as his calling. My guess is that being a "swordsman" is a very open Calling compared to what most of them are saddled with.

Pretty much. Sure they can change their calling. If they complete their earlier one. Which they can't. You can't complete "being a merchant". You can't complete "guarding the village's bridge". You're not meant to be able to complete your calling. So this changes nothing. It changes less than nothing because again, unless the goods teleport in this world, they would have at least one merchant making the travel to their capital city. So if it was really just about going from point A to point B, again, twelve wolf pelts and you're set for fast travel, calling or not. And if anything, as a last resort, Kirito could have gone alone. Who needs a guide when you have mountains and roads leading to villages and houses and where everyone can tell you the direction. He ain't going faster with Eugeo, and it's apparently not a food/shelter problem either 'cause they ain't carrying much. So if it was really about reaching the capital, Kirito created a roadblock out of nowhere. Heck, has Eugeo even ever been to the capital before? Even once? How would he know the direction?! So the actual argument is, again, that Kirito for whatever reason felt he needed a companion and for whatever reason noone else in the village would say yes. Because noone else in the village would have any darn reason to travel with a stranger far from his/her duties for a fool's errand at the capital. Except the merchant and his twelve wolf pelts. As for why Kirito thinks he needs someone despite being an OP loner from earlier seasons, I assume memories with Eugeo, but the show never gives a reason nor hints in that direction so that's bad writing. But if you imagine that it's the memories, then eh, everything clicks. Anyway, everything else is spot on. Ruined tension as wounds turn out inconsequential, as trees fall stupidly fast now -- really, would have it hurt to make a two-weeks to two-months montage of Eugeo learning and them using that sword, with rain on top because drama... -- and as batshit crazy villagers accept everything with a bright smile. I mean the kiddo is only several thousand generations in advance but why ask questions. Okay on that last one I'm making an empty rant, the reaction is normal and Alice's dad is reacting fine, but come on, that whole tree-cutting is treated like it was nothing now. Three episodes god darnit. Alicization was never going to be a masterpiece but it's a fine show, putting far more efforts than the previous seasons. What happened in this episode had been happening for four episodes. The orc smashing Kirito wasn't a surprise, it was foreshadowed by Kirito barely being able to dent the tree. That was the new norm. Personally, I really see Alicization as an independant itekai centered around NPCs with then a marketer adding SAO on top to sell it. But again, plenty of episodes to go back to old habits, so W&S. In the meantime I got hooked with Slime Datta Ken so I'm set.

Your argument about the arm is wrong, his left arm was injured not his right. When Kirito was kicked into the ice his right arm didnt get fucked up. He was paralyzed from the fear of pain and dying so he struggled to pick up his sword until Eugeo acted.

If and only if Kawahara doesn't shoot his story in the foot, as he seems predetermined by FUCKING FATE to do every GORRAM time.

I’m surprised you liked the action sequences so much. After all these years of seeing Kirito’s character go absolutely nowhere, I found it really hard to care about what was going on. The biggest reaction it got from me was a couple of laughs at Kirito scared shitless. The shot was so goofy, and it was kinda satisfying to see that front of chuuni cockiness shattered for a second.

One by one Kirito could fight again because of a function in the Underworld would be explained later. - Incarnation - **** Alice helped them and gave them life so that they don't die, and it would be explained how she came later. **** The could use the sword because of Exps just like when you play a game...you face monsters then you gain Exp then you LVL gets higher, that's exactly what happened.

OK so expressing concern over the limp arm thing, it could be that Kirito is filled with adrenaline, which could temporarily allow Kirito to use the arm at full capacity for the duration of the fight. The body is a very interesting piece of machinery.

"Because of that goblin battle the other day, my Object Control Authority has exceeded this sword's number" That was the one line in this episode that made me throw my hands into the air. It obviously implies that there is some sort of level-requirement-esqu game mechanic here which has "coincidentally" never been mentioned before. Problem is: This is supposedly the sword that some legendary hero used to slay a mighty dragon, a deed that literally went down in history. Then we're supposed to believe that slaying a bunch of goblins is enough to give a noob player the authority to wield THAT sword, which either means the object authority system is garbage, or that the legendary hero slayed the dragon with a shitty, albeit unreasonably ornate low-level sword, like some sort of self-imparing dark souls veteran. In the end it's just another instance of Reki using nonsensical gamey sounding techno-babble to mask his shitty contrived writing.

I felt similarly. It's not great, but seeing Kirito get pretty brutally wounded by that goblin was pretty thrilling and surprising. It's not a fight unless there's something to actually resist. But then the show ignores how badly injured he is and continues being SAO. I was actually re-watching Yu Yu Hakusho and it kind of reminded me of this. Yusuke is constantly in situations where he's getting the shit beaten out of him, and the show always acknowledges how tired and messed up he is as he's fighting. Just a thought lol

I'm around 4:50 in and there's only one thing I really disagree with here: It didn't take an afternoon to cut it down. Eugeo clearly took multiple days to cut down the tree during Kirito's sword training with him. We see a bigger gap in the tree after we see the training montage, as well as changes in weather (rain, sunny, etc) I assume they were practicing the sword skills on said tree during training for who knows how long. Which helped. EDIT: I've finished the video now and overall I agree yeah.

At 1:52 it's his left arm that gets cut and at 3:02 it's his right arm that he can't move so I don't know why he can't move his arm. I was confused about this when I watched the episode the first time, I thought he was just suddenly traumatized and afraid for the first time in his life for no reason except extra tension and for Eugeo to get hurt.

again you assumed most the villagers have callings that would be able to be finished. for example, the guy whos calling is to guard the village or run their farm probably at best has a time limit and at worst its until they can't do it anymore. plus none of the other villagers probably would have any motivation to go to the main town anyway other than the sister. its also been a tradition for someone to be able to cut down the tree not that that ever happened before.
