Calibration is the process of comparing a measuring instrument or system to a standard reference to determine and correct deviations. It ensures that the instrument provides accurate, reliable, and consistent results. Calibration is vital in metrology for maintaining measurement accuracy and traceability to international or national standards.
Concept of Calibration:
Purpose: To identify errors in measurement instruments and adjust them to comply with standards.
Traceability: Calibration establishes a direct link between measurements and recognized standards.
Frequency: Instruments are calibrated periodically, depending on their usage, required precision, and environmental conditions.
Calibration Procedure:
Preparation:
Identify the instrument to be calibrated.
Ensure the calibration environment is stable and free from vibrations, extreme temperatures, or humidity.
Gather the necessary calibration standards and tools.
Comparison:
Use a reference standard with known accuracy higher than the instrument being calibrated.
Measure the same quantity with both the instrument and the reference standard under identical conditions.
Adjustment:
Note any deviations between the instrument’s readings and the reference standard.
Adjust the instrument to align its readings with the standard, if adjustable.
Documentation:
Record the calibration results, including before-and-after readings, adjustments made, and uncertainties.
Issue a calibration certificate.
Validation:
Verify the instrument's performance after adjustment to ensure conformity.
Significance:
Calibration enhances measurement accuracy, supports quality assurance, and ensures compliance with industrial and regulatory standards.
