I served in the Air Force Honor Guard. It was an honor that I will never forget. Maintaining military bearing while presenting the flag was always the most emotional part. I once presented the flag to a small girl, I couldn’t hold back the tears.

My father was in the air force. Do you have honors specific to the branch or is it whoever is available in the area?

@@1SheepishWolf it was specific to the branch of service. We did USAF honors for Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Indiana.

I did it as well while stationed at scott afb. It was the most humbling experience of my life handing that flag off. Many times where I had to hold back tears. I also handed one to the sole surviving daughter who was now a orphan. She must have been maybe 13. Was really special but sad.

This is somewhat typical of the honor bestowed upon service members that pass away, depending on the person's rank as to whom present's the flag. When my brother's memorial service was conducted it was raining, however the honor guard still fired off the rifle salute to my brother. I was given two of the bullet casings from this. I held up fine until the rifles went off and taps was played, then I fell apart. However the men that conducted my brother's honors did well!!

Something about a military funeral makes it so much more real.

Good bless this fallen brother. The intent was present. The display was poor. We buried 63 of my brothers under colors on my watch, and I in every position but the officer's. I learned to bugle so we wouldn't have to use a beatbox like the first few times I had the honor of performing back in '91.
