Jason Lesperance My best piece of advice. Don’t take it super seriously, you don’t need to be captian America and all super soldier. You can have fun with it. Do the exercises right when you are ether doing PT or being smoked, as long as you are putting in effort that’s all they care about, so if you have to go slow to do it correctly do it. Don’t buy anything anyone offers you. Near the end of boot camp I had some many people trying to sell me my family crest and shit, doesn’t matter. Save your money in AIT and boot camp so when you get out you can have 6G or more saves up for things you ACTUALLY need. Best of luck man, please if you have any questions reply back.

In the Navy, they don't fly as much as you think as they have management obligations as well. In all other branches, I think only officers fly. But you can be a WO in the Army and fly . I went through Fort Sill in June of 1994. Nearly 30 years ago... I can assure you, there wasn't a Drill Instructor on that base that ever spoke to a Private at reception or in training with the calm and demeanor that this Drill Instructor used. They've changed things so much. I've read a lot about the changes and why they made them, and I think it does make sense. Does part of me wish everyone could experience what we went through back then? Yea, a part of me does. But at the same time, I remember being anxious, nervous, and on edge for 8 weeks straight... LOL. Maybe the kids these days don't experience that... I'm not sure. It was still the greatest decision I ever made and wouldn't change it for the world. I'd go through it all again without hesitation. The DI's have a tough job, and one could argue that they have to deal with a lot more now than they did back then. Regardless, this man did an outstanding job. I hope those recruits can look back in 30 years and feel the same way I do about my instructors from back then.

I mean, a drill sergeant have to be intimidating and to the point when he needs to, he can be as mean as he wants as long as it is within the law. The first thing in military training is discipline and that’s what drill sergeants are. Drill Sergeants aren’t assholes, it’s only viewed that way by snowflakes going to the army thinking they’re better than everyone and thinks that they’re special only to have their heads pulled out of their arses by their drill sergeants . Drill sergeants do what they need to do in order for discipline, this is why there are 2 sort of people coming out of the military, one who actually participated and followed orders and do what is told and one who complains about how everyone is so rude and mean. Look, this is why we have highly trained soldiers working for the U.S Army not bimbos who complains and sit around, there is no place for that bullshittery. :3

It's definitely a whole new era from my time at the Naval Recruit Training Center, Great Lakes; July, 1970. Shakedown there was done in a classroom, with school desks. We were fresh off the train, and "in a world of sh*t", so we were repeatedly told. Some Bluejacket with 3 chevrons on his sleeve told us that every personal item we had was being shipped to our homes, and anything we didn't want mommy and daddy to find would be put in his box. The box was handed out at the front, and was passed successively to the side and rearwards until it reached the last man in the room. I was sitting only a few desks away from that person. When I looked in the box, a brief inventory included multiples of the following: Firearms, Ammo, Straight Razors, Knives, Brass Knuckles, Saps, Slingshots, Bags of Weed, Bags of Joints, Pipes, Rolling Papers, Rolling Machines, Bags of Reds, Bags of Blues, Bags of Speed, Bags of Cocaine, Bags of Heroin, Works (injection kits), Bottles of Alcohol - every type, up to full pints, Every form of printed Pornography imaginable, and an assortment of other lethal-looking items I'd never seen before. I couldn't help taking a much closer look at my fellow recruits, and wondering who contributed what. After that, we stood in individual 2-foot squares painted on a basketball court, stripped naked, our remaining stuff in a shipping box - and prepared for cavity search.

I did this 30 years ago. This video was much more calm and way more organized than what I remember. I remember arriving on base and we were told to get off the bus before they counted to 10. This is reception NOT BCT. For any soldiers wondering. (Currently a 25B at Fort Gordon). In the video - (120th Reception Battalion) you’ll hate the week you’re there lol. During Reception week, the drills there are NOT allowed to make you do any type of corrective action. Only type of “Physical Training” you’ll be doing is running from A-B and standing at the defac for 1-2 hours.

Yes. If I was forced to choose which to do again, I'd rather go through the two months of actual basic training again than go through that week of reception (I've heard people going through reception in three days but I had like seven days) again. Reception truly was one of the worst times of my life how they would just have us stand out in the cold for literally hours on end. Even at night when we were done processing for the day, they still kept us out on the cold for hours instead of just letting us go inside immediately to go to bed I'm so glad actual basic didn't mind fuck with us quite the same way.

A HS buddy of mine who ran on our XC team with me volunteered for the US Marines during the Vietnam war. He told me that boot camp training was so easy that he had to pretend he was suffering, even as he carried another guy's backpack up the hills. He said it was never as tough as a good XC practice and that I would have a ball at basic if I joined. He made it clear that if he let the DI know he still had plenty in the tank he would have been loaded down with ever more gear until they broke him. So he carefully faked suffering by acting like those around him. He was following the advice I'd given him that my dad had given me, "Keep your mouth shut, and don't volunteer."

@Angel Vollant while what you say makes a lot of sense, some folks (especially in the south) don't see their pocket knife as a weapon but, rather just a handy tool and something that they bring with them without thinking about it, simply because they typically use them for so many things in life. Being that I've lived in the south my entire life of 40 years, I always carry a knife and was brought up to understand that no self respecting man, provider, father, brother, etc ever leaves home without certain things on them, knives are just one of many tools carried to make our own or our fellow American's lives easier if need be.😎

In my experience, NCMs and training staff in general will usually only start being unpleasant when you are past reception. They don’t do it because they actually dislike you, but to get you accustomed to being spoken to as such. They want you to be used to being shouted at and down to, to being addressed with aggression and hostility while keeping composure. They also want you to stop saying ‘sorry’ every time you mess up at something. If thirteen weeks of basic gave me one thing: it was an incredibly heightened stress management ability after 20+ years of cringing every time someone raised their voice at me.

For those who haven't been through BCT, or any kind of inprocessing. I stood on those mats when I joined. They made very confusing commands and made it a very stressful situation intentionally. Lots of emotions and fear at times in the beginning. If you're going to BCT, just know that whatever they are doing, is purposeful, and timely. It's easy, just do it.

It's SIMPLE, not necessarily "easy" It definitely is not easy for a lot of people to be standing around for literally hours and hours at a time not knowing what is going on. I won't forget in reception how even at night when we were done processing for the day, the drill sergeants would still keep us standing around outside for hours (I had a watch on, it was several hours at a time) even seemingly around midnight before they finally let us go inside the buildings to our bays to sleep.

keep in mind this is only the very beginning of reception. the very first drill sergeants are not supposed to be hollering and acting crazy. Over the course of reception the recruits will meet more drill sergeants who act more aggressively. They finally won't meet the actual stereotypical hollering screaming wild drill sergeants until they actually get to basic training.

When I enlisted at Oakland Ca. We arrived at Fort Ord.at 2 AM. They began screaming before we got off the bus. And got 3 hours sleep. When we got to out new company to start basic .it really wasn't that bad .we did get up at 4 Am. For 8 weeks we had a great Platoon sergeant He was great at helping us How to spit shine out boots.,clean out M1 .after 8 weeks we actually looked like soldiers. Was proud to have served my country.

It's always the quiet Drills who are the most intimidating. Our Senior Drill was like that. Never shouted, other than to be sure he was heard by the people in the back of a formation. And for a 5 foot 7 160 pound man, he was and still is, in my mind, the single most intimidating person I have ever met
