Loved Ross Petro. In a government full of characters today, he is sorely missed.

SNL has Dana make comedy of Perot's NAFTA warning. Unfortunately NAFTA did do great damage to the middle class. Very funny at the time.

NAFTA kicked in in 1994. The 1994-2001 period was one of the greatest for the middle class in American history.

@@SKa-tt9nm The 1994-2001 boom was mainly fueled by the growth of the tech sector and adoption of the Internet. This was followed by a bust in 2001. It also decreased the manufacturing capacity of the US, and moved most of the wealth that was in the center of the country out to the coasts.

@@chawkins.019 No it wasn't. Where did you get your economics degree? From _The Impact of Nafta on the United States:_ _Perhaps the worst fear in the United States about NAFTA was that U.S. workers could not compete, and there would be a surge of imports based on low Mexican wages. Ross Perot memorably spoke of a “giant sucking sound south” of jobs moving to Mexico because of NAFTA. In 1991, the average hourly compensation in Mexican manufacturing was only about 14 percent of the U.S. figure: $2.17 in Mexico versus $15.45 for the United States (Hufbauer and Schott, 1993, p. 11). There was also concern that investment would move from the United States to the Mexican economy, further eliminating U.S. jobs._ _The evidence on labor markets post-NAFTA indicates that, while NAFTA has had some effect, the effects in the U.S. economy are indeed small and are over whelmed by other U.S. macroeconomic trends such as a rapidly growing economy. Many post-NAFTA studies describe the effects of increased U.S. imports on jobs. Hinojosa et al. (2000) use a partial equilibrium model to analyze the effects changes in imports from Mexico have on U.S. demand for domestic production and therefore U.S. employment. They find that the job impact is relatively small, with the total estimated potential job impact in the United States from 1990-97 due to imports from Mexico at 299,000, or an average of 37,000 jobs lost per year due to increased Mexican trade. To put this number in perspective, they note that the U.S. economy has been creating over 200,000 jobs per month._ But what was a disaster was Trump's tariffs, something you probably support. They've cost more jobs than they saved.

I only remember reporters taking photos of Perot during some press confrence with flash bulbs going and him saying, 'Are ya'll finished' but guess he was particular in other ways. Do remember he was popular back then.

I joined United We Stand when it was formed. I voted for Perot in '92 and '96. In '92 Perot siphoned votes away from Bush helping Clinton win the presidency.
