The Gepard story is incredible - it was retired from the German Bundeswehr years ago, and now Germany realises that having close- to medium range AA is actually more important than ever, also because of drones. Expensive, long range systems like Patriot alone won’t do the job. New AA systems will be procured (Rheinmetall Skyranger?), but this takes times and the Gepard had filled that exact role as it shows in Ukraine.

Its funny to me how many people are like "The Leopard 2 is trash! It gets destroyed so easily!". First: Its a war machine. Of course it gets damaged or destroyed. BUT they are few in numbers on the front line and we see just a few of them getting destroyed entirely. So what does that mean? It is really effective and withstand much before they are not usable anymore. And second: A war machine can be replaced fast, but the crew not. And thats the key. The crew is more likely to survive in a Leopard 2 than in any other soviet tank. Alone that makes it way more valuable than what the ukrainians had in their armoury.

The other thing is...The Western Weapon has Crews that are well trained for many, many years. And the are well trained to operate cross-weapon simultaneous. Its a hugh different between trained the basics for 1-2 Month or trained for Years with cross-weapon operations, repairs, combat tactics and so on and on... And this is why the coming F16 will make no hugh different...ukraine can maybe fly them but not perfectly operate with them and they will have many loses because the are Rookies....like with the other western Stuff.

@@KirTyun First wrong point you made is when you typed ''A war machine can be replaced fast''. That's not true and that's because Leopards can't be repaired on Ukrainian soil, they need to go to Poland and get repaired then sent back and that won't happen ''fast''. Second wrong point is where you say that western tanks are safer for the crew and that's debatable because with today's weapons mostly Drones and Anti-Tank weapons carried by soldiers it all depends on where the ammo will hit the tank and if the tank is covered by soldiers and aircrafts, also the training of the crew plays crucial role and Ukrainians didn't train for too long.

Notably a big chunk of that €85B EU aid would also come indirectly from germany, increasing its total help considerably. And most of that is directly financial in nature, whereas the exact monetary value of old-ish soon-to-be-decommissioned military aid from the US is hard to put a good number to. Btw: I'm not scoffing at US help: it's great, it's needed and it encompasses some of the most important aid in the form of huge amounts of ammunition! Just that there has been so much discussion about "how much the US is spending on Ukraine, why doesn't Europa pick up the slack".

Because I looked it up for Germany last week, I can spell it out: Germany's economy is almost 1/7th of the US, but it provided 1/3rd of the US contribution. When you add humanitarian expenditures, the gap narrows to 1/2. And the same is true for many other European nations, with the notable exceptions of France, Italy, Spain and UK. In total, EU nations and EU institutions provided 133 billion Euros, head and shoulders over what the US gave. Which is ok because we're here in Europe, but in the US the general perception is, that they are paying for everything. Which objectively not true. Not in relation to GDP and not in plain numbers. If that false perception could be corrected, it would stop the erosion of support, I believe. It shouldnt be a competition, but as a non-German I cant help but notice all the German bashing that was going on over the past 2 years, when the numbers prove the opposite and other nations who do less than they could, lay really low and fly under the radar...

Logistics in general must be a nightmare in Ukraine. They operate various military vehicles from various nations. I mean, the Bundeswehr decided not to use a heavy caliber machine gun (50 cal) and instead use the MG3 in a light, medium and heavy role (on "lafette" tripod"). This only changed recently with M2 Machine-Guns added to some choppers, spec-ops and some recon units and the reason given? Logistics. Just using 7.62 for pretty much every firearm (cold war, in the 90's 5.56 joined the club with the G36) would be much easier on the logistical side. Now turn to Ukraine. Not only do they use all kinds of western calibers, they also use all kinds of Russian calibers. This alone is brutal, absolutely brutal logistically. Thinking about the mess in regards to vehicles on top of all this would give me nightmares for sure, if I'd be responsible for logistics in Ukraine. They are marvels handling these challenges so well. It's almost unbelievable. Slava Ukraine!

@@zoolkhan Shortcomings is an understatement and no, it has not been fixed and it will not be fixed. The Ukraine can't replace their entire military with unified western gear all at once. That's literally impossible. There is not enough western gear available. The polish help repairing Russian gear and polish origin gear. They do not help repairing Leopard tanks, as they asked for ludicrous requirements for Germans to setup shop. Basically, they wanted to get a dollar for 50 cent. On a sidenote they also used this to put Germany in a bad light. Quite pathetic in times of war tbh, but it is not a polish quirk. A lot of these arms deals are more or less sideways to get rid of older equipment on the cheap side. Anyhow. So Leopards now need to be pulled to Germany and Lithuania for repairs and maintenance. The funny thing about the Gepard is that, not only was it retired, but it was replaced by the various Roland air defense systems which themselves have also been retired. Just to put into perspective how old it is.

It hasnt been replaced and it's mordern version isnt that old. This type of weaponsystems were deemed to be irrelevant and therefore there havent been a replacement. The weaponsystem started beeing phased out in 2010 in Germany. Gepards are still in service outside of Germany (beside Ukraine).

The main Problem right now is that some of the systems break down because of wrong maintenance and the fact that Poland under PiS didn't allow KMw (makers of PzH 2000 and Leo 2) set up shop in Poland. So they had to set up shop in Lithuania. Also, because of urgency , the Ukraine insisted on a 3 months training schedule, normal is 6 months. Some of the systems broke because Ukrainian mechanics tried to fix them without the proper knowledge. Not their fault, they simply lacked 3 months of training. However, those problems should be gone very soon. Since KMW is setting up a new shop in the Ukraine, so maintenance, production and training will be done in Ukraine. FYI, the Iris-T as a success rate in Ukraine of 100 % . One shot one kill. Patriot has 98 % according to Ukraine.

So Germany providing this kind of Weaponry and even Training for Soldiers and all of this on this Scale is really Surprising.

@@RustyBear that's false. Indeed in the beginning of the counter offensive Ukraine tried a breakthrough - and lost some Leopards.... Visually confirmed destroyed: 1 x Leopard 1A5, 7 Leopard 2A4, 4 Leopard 2A6, 1 Stridsvagn 122. Additionally damaged or abandoned 7 Leopard 2 A4, 8 2A6 and 4 Stridsvagn 122. It's unclear, how much of the damaged/abandoned are recovered. However, most of these losses occurred in the first 3-5 days of the counteroffensive. Ukraine then changed tactics from mechanized assault to small infantry groups followed by mechanized backup. Ukraine got at least 77-80 Leopard 2, and currently arriving bit by bit (because they need refits and updates) around 160 Leopard 1A5 ... and even so older and smaller calibre, the lighter Leopard 1A5 might come in very handy. German 1A5 tankers regularly performed excellent against Leopard 2A4. Considering the battlefield, and mile deep heavy mining, this is actually a great performance. Especially, since many crews could evacuate.

Despite the strength of the German systems, there are unfortunately still many problems. Germany supplies (has) too few spare parts, the repair capacities are too low, the total number of weapons systems is too small and the way the Ukrainians use the systems is not always ideal. At the beginning of 2023, it was hoped that the Leopard 2 in particular would be a kind of game changer. I think this hope has now been caught up in the reality of the war.
@Buzzillus
@Buzzillus Жыл бұрын
But that's not correct! Because with the weapon systems delivered, be it PzH2000 Mars2, Gepard-SPAAG, and Leopard2A6, spare parts packages were always delivered and subsequently delivered! With these replacement parts, the usual failures caused by wear and tear can be solved. But if a vehicle is damaged in combat, it needs other, and always different, means of repair. Therefore, it takes longer to repair vehicles that have been damaged by enemy influence.

I would say the main problem is that current Ukrainian tactics revolve around the old Soviet style doctrine instead of the Western doctrine. This makes sense as they use T-64BVs and T-72/T-80s. Germany also has a significantly underfunded and under equipped military so making contributions significantly larger would be risky since that would deplete what little remains in the German stockpile.

@@marsultor6131 I agree. I would think it’s foolish to assume a couple F-16s would change this. Russia’s Air Force seems the most competent of their military considering the VDV got shredded early on. False. German, Spanish and US trainers themselves have said they haven't seen such fast learners in their lives.
