German Gepard Protecting Ukrainian Skies from Russian Drone Attacks

Many predict that this winter in Ukraine will be even more difficult than the previous one. While the Russian army is building up resources to attack infrastructure, air defense units are preparing for active work. We joined the crew of the Gepard, a German self-propelled anti-aircraft gun, to find out how such an old machine is useful here in Ukraine.

It's funny that we Germans already decommissioned the tank in 2012 because there was no real threat that would have made it necessary to continue using it. Ten years later and the threat from drones is so great that many people wish we had never decommissioned the vehicle. Greetings from Germany and good hunting

@@xeon39688 The Skyranger is both cheaper and better. The Gepard uses old radars, canons and ammo. The Skyranger can shoot programmable AHEAD ammo and has better, more modern radars and targeting computers. It needs less rounds to down a target. The maintenance of the system is much cheaper and it can be mounted on any platform.
@jansix4287
@jansix4287 6 ай бұрын
We decommissioned it not because there were no threats, but because modern fighter jets fly too fast and too high to be hit by cannon fire. And with an active radar mounted on top Gepard is constantly revealing its position, painting a big red target on the tank. 🎯 Gepard is only useful in Ukraine, because the Russian Air Force is complete trash. They should’ve been able to win the air war over Ukraine, but they didn’t. 🤷

What was old is new. With the explosion of drone warfare the Gepard has been thrust back into service and of course defense industry is producing new auto cannon versions. The Gepard is effective and it's just super cool! Ukraine, Romania and Brazil are the only current operators as Ukraine's allies buy back and refurbish them for Ukraine. Plus Romania is right next door and I'm sure they could cooperate on maintenance etc. All around it's awesome!
@fiendishrabbit8259
@fiendishrabbit8259 6 ай бұрын
The main drawback is that the Leopard 1 is a much too complicated and heavy chassis for the work it's doing today in ukraine. Modern autocannon airdefences (like PASARS-16, Skyranger 30/35, LVKV9040 or the Russian Pantsir) tend to use lighter chassis. We'll probably see more SPAAGs similar to PASARS-16 (although capable of using smart ammunition like the 3P/AHEAD). We might see higher calibers (for bigger rounds with more tungsten pellets and longer range), but probably not anything the size of the 76mm Otomelara as those require bigger vehicles to be mounted on. The integrated radar in the Gepard is a nice feature (which makes it self-sufficient), but the radar has so much longer range than the gun that we're probably going to see a move towards batteries using a single radar and multiple gun-carriages (with the guncarriages using lighter and cheaper optical targeting systems).

The days of wasting lots of rounds just to track targets are largely in the past. Modern targeting systems will track several drones and enables it to target them with accurate bursts. Photos or short videos can give the impression they're always burning through rounds at an extreme pace but often it only needs to fire at one drone for a few seconds. For missiles, all that counts is how much it can fire in 15-20 seconds, then it will either be succesful or be too late.
@recruitsnyder13

They fire 6 - 10 shells to hit a drone. And now ammo supply issues seem to be resolved, more Gepards are on their way (US bought 60 from Jordan which need to be repaired/refurbished first). With all this talk about 'game changers' on the battlefield, I think those air defense systems (Gepards and IRIS-T) from Germany which were sent to Ukraine last year saved more lives than all Abrams and Leopards combined. No one was talking about the civilians ...

Most NATO nations have only limited numbers of tactical, Mobile, AA systems like guepard. This is because until recently, NATO doctrine has always operated with the assurance of air dominance. This means that these types of close in air defence platforms have only a niech capability. Either being deemed obsolete or not worthy of mass production. That being said, Britain has supplied systems like the Stormer as well as a modified jackle that uses ASRAAM missiles in a surface to air capability. A major factor in the moving away from such platforms was the rise of the attack helicopter like the AH64 or Ka 52. These could move with a unit and provide the same protection with better vision, range, and versatility. Though once again, events in Ukraine have forced many to rethink how assets are deployed.

One of the reason why Gepard is so good at shooting down drones is because it has 2 sets of radar one is for searching for target and the other is for tracking and calculating firing solution, because of that Gepard can track and shooting at a target while keeping an eye on the other, as far as I know Gepard is the only gun mounted AA that have this capability as most only can track or search or both but only can do one at a time or needing a seperate system to do it

Actually, the Gepard found a new lease on life due to the nature of drone warfare. It's capabilities were originally designed for low-flying planes and helicopters to protect a moving line of tanks, APCs, and IFVs.

Everything works in cycles! Because of drones: Germany needs to update and put a newer Gepard into production. The USA needs to revise and update the design of the Sgt York system and get it into production. The Western Allies need to resurrect and update the old Bofors anti-aircraft Gun mounts design and put it back into production. The lethality of drones is still be developed.

If you had told the developers of the Gepard back then that in 50 years their vehicle would be used by the Ukrainians to fight against Russia, they would have laughed at you.
@KBKriechbaum

Maybe not laughed, but curious and worried given the political climate at the time of development. Same goes for most western vehicles in the war. Actually if you'd tell me 15 years ago that a large land war with massive tank assaults is about to happen in europe, it would still sound quite wild. 2014 was a clear sign that it will become probable again.

For propeller driven drones they need to develop a radar guided AA shell that disperses shrapnel and clouds of fine Dynema thread that would entagle the prop.
@innerlight7018

No need. The Gepard fires 35mm HE shrapnel projectiles. It works against all threads if they are not too fast.

Kinda sounds like you could make mobile AA remote controlled without much if any operational disadvantage since you need the target to be painted with radar or other method anyway to have a decent chance of hitting. Connection could be maintained via a balloon or drone link if needed.

In the early 2000s, 4 PZA Loara prototypes were built in Poland on the T-72 chassis, which were similar to the Gepard. However, the army did not decide to purchase it because they preferred to modernize the cheaper ZSU-23-4 sets.

I wished my old Gepard could help. I would spend it to help you in Ukraine for holding your airspace a bit cleaner from harm. But its only an old 1:16 RC model. I live close to an closed AA training casern, where many cats and Roland Kette + Rad, lived one time. Greatings and all the best wishes from north germany. May our cats hold youre sky clear and may there come many more to help. Slava Ukraini
