As a PSV fan, he wasn’t that good at PSV… I mean he was okay, tall strong, and pretty good positioning. But nothing special at the time, timber was lightyears ahead of him. He was not a player that you see and think wow. Especially when other young defenders who left the league like Martinez, de ligt etc. This ofc doesn’t give any guarantees because Botman and van der ven weren’t that amazing either and look at them now. I don’t watch Everton tho so I don’t know how well he is playing but for me it’s a big surprise after I read 70 mil. If he stayed at PSV he would probably be 2de choice or play on the right last season. 50 mil could be a solid signing and he could develop behind Martinez. But I think the right CB has a lil bit more of a priority. What I read from the press at that time was that he was loved by his teammates, a down to earth humble and hardworking guy.

A star? No. His time at PSV in the Netherlands, where three teams dominate the league, is not a reliable measure of his ability. At Everton, as you pointed out, he played in a low block for a mostly defensive team. Two points: the Premier League is far higher in quality than the Dutch League, and playing in a dominant team that defends high up the pitch requires excellent technique, which I doubt Branthwaite possesses. Lastly, English players are often overhyped and overvalued. If Manchester United want to change their approach, they should invest in scouting for smart buys and bargains like other top European clubs (Real Madrid, Bayern, Dortmund). Garnacho, for example, was a top investment.

You have the likes of Anselmino and Leny Yoro, Todibo, who have skills on the ball. At much cheaper prices. So, we know other high price signings have failed at United. A young lad, older lad, no matter who, have massive pressure on them as is. So, if you then sign to overprice, like 70 mill. Most crumple under the pressure. So if United pay overprice, it will be a disservice. United must be smart about signings and not repeat past mistakes.
