Ahh a fellow Weatherby connesseur! (sp?) My eyes lit up when I read the title of the video. I too have longed for a Weatherby since my early adolescense years (I'm 51 now). I remember having in my desk in 6th grade a gun magazine with an article on the .340 Weatherby cartridge saying it could be the most versatile cartridge ever (the tops of the desks we had flipped up so you could keep books, papers, etc. in them). The article went on to say it is powerful enough on its own to take any of the largest, most dangerous beasts on earth, along with being downloaded to hunt deer and smaller fauna. I have wanted a Weatherby Mark V Deluxe in .340 Weatherby Magnum ever since. One could argue that the Mk V Deluxe is among the most beautiful rifles ever made. Simply gorgeous. At around $2500, a fair price as well for such a fine rifle. One day I WILL own one....one day....... Btw, AWESOME VIDEO!! And what tremor?? Youre fine brother. No one's bothered by it...whatever it is. I can't tell anything's wrong?
@UnitedStatesOfGuns4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kindness and sharing the Weatherby life story. I'm certain you'll have a Weatherby soon - all good things to those who wait. Some of the Mark Vs have wood that is so spectacular I can't believe it. Lately I handled 2 that would be Grade 7 if they were Turkish walnut - all for what amounts to a very modest price considering... Anyway, I'm with you and look forward to which cal. you choose. All the best to you.

Quality video, please don’t sell yourself short. The only thing lacking in your video was omission of the .257 weatherby magnum, it was Roy’s favorite (and is my favorite) cartridge. Not only is it one of the most iconic and best selling weatherby cartridges but it is only now over seventy years later that is is being edged out by the ballistics of newer 6.5s like the prc. The .257 is the bigger badder grandpa of all the .25 cal and 6.5 mm round it’s still an exceptional hunting cartridge and really deserves a place in any conversation about weatherby.
@2011persol Жыл бұрын
i really doubt the 6.5mm prc will match the big bad .257 wby mag, another channel , reloading weatherby, achieved 101 gr barnes@ 3800 fps !!!! max loads of course..... he also had another load with 92 gr berger @ 3866 fps!!!

I like this one .. The town i grew up in had a Weatherby dealer out of the 6 stores in business and once a month back in the late 1950's and into the 1960's i would stop at the Weatherby dealer about once a month to look over the collection .. The Weatherby rifles to me were top notch in quality and workmanship and i told myself one day i'm going to buy one ..I remember at the time my Dad thought one of those was way too much money when you could buy model 70 for $124.00 or a Remington 700 for around the same ..So as time passed and i saved my money and i bought a Weatherby in .224 as i wanted a ctg close to the 22/250 in performance and the .224 is just that .. What a sweet quality rifle that would shoot very accurate .. You are correct the Weatherby rifles Mark V were made in Germany by J. P. Sauer & Sons who also built the fine Colt Sauer bolt rifles that were of excellent quality too .. I'm very happy with my Weatherby rifle to me there was nothing like a Weatherby ..I hunted with hunters who used the Weatherby 300 magnum for mostly elk , i never seen a bull walk away from that cartridge it would reach out there and deliver the results .. In fact it was 9 years ago i met a fellow at the range who had a Weatherby 30/378 now i was impressed with that ctg, of course he asked if i wanted to fire it , oh yes i would like to try it .. He had 1" thick steel plates hung up @400 yards his scope had marks for 200,300,400 and he told me which mark to use , oh my i'll tell you what those 190 grain bullets just paper punched those steel plates , that was fun..His favorite load was 119 grains of a certain powder ... off the bench it really wasn't near as bad as i thought the recoil would be .. You did a very good job , well done .. thanks

I am a long range bench rest shooter, all of my guns have been built by a gunsmith for whatever round that interests at the time. I had a rifle built for a 300 weatherby and I have won more matches with it than anything else. Weatherby was ahead of all the others with his case design and the extra powder that it can hold due to the fact the the shoulders are much steeper. I don't know much about the quality of the rifles but they look good and I have never heard a bad report about one. From what I can see, it comes down to the quality of the barrel. If the barrel is good then you can bet the action will be good, I have never heard of a good barrel on a bad action. Anyway I might buy one for hunting, I don't think I could go wrong.

Mike, I would definitely say that your channel is one of the best. Far from “ragged edge”. Regarding Weatherby rifles, back in the late 1970’s as a teen, we had a family friend who was an avid hunter and in particular, bear hunter. He had a large collection of Weatherby rifles and stuffed Grizzlies. He invited my folks and I to dinner and showed me his collection of Weatherby rifles. I don’t recall how many he had, but there were a lot and at the time, I think I was more interested in his daughter than his fine collection. He told us many bear hunting stories in Alaska and in one story, he and his pilot of a small single engine float plane ended up in Soviet airspace where they landed and bagged a bear on some island. Then quickly loaded the bear on the plane and got back to the US. He always said that Weatherby was the rifle to have for hunting. He has long since past on, not sure whatever happened to his collection. As always, I enjoyed your video. Cheers.

I LOVE THAT! I found behind the butt plate of my 1954 Savage 99 F, a hand written note from the Savage Employee who did the assembly of my rifle. I bought this rifle as a used gun in 2011 and it was in fact 100% original condition which is why I believe the note survived in place, the stock was never removed. The note contained the first and last name of the Savage Employee as well as a unique phone number. The note read "If you see this, fell free to call the number provided". CL8-88XX was the number, clearly no longer in service. We did however locate the family of the Savage employee, he had passed in 1987. They emphatically asked to buy the note, instead we gave them the rifle and the note at no cost. I did keep a photo of the rifle and photo copy of the note for my scrap book.

I've had a .257 Weatherby over 30 years, built in a Sako Magnum Action. About the time the rifle was being built (in 1988), I got interested in the Powley Ballistics Computer (a slide rule and tables for predicting performance), one of the features that piqued my interest was a Barrel Volume (Barrel Length) vs Case Capacity function... Weatherby cartridges had a reputation for being "overbore" (Barrel Length being too short for the Case Capacity) in several configurations, so I took the opportunity to use the Powley Computer to calculate optimum barrel length for several mid-bore calibers (6mm to 338 caliber)... oddly enough, the .257 Weatherby did come out as a slight overbore until you got to around 26" of rifling... so I built the rifle with a 28" long barrel. Six weeks later, the proof was in the pudding: it was pushing 100 grain bullets at over 3300 FPS with a *starting* load of IMR-4831 (according to the Speer Manual 11th. Edition). The rifle also shot really well: it was meant as a Deer/Coyote rifle, but it was a bit heavy to tote as a deer rifle. Still have the rifle today.

Everything from weatherby stomps on Winchester and other manufacturers ballistically. So many 270 win fans don’t even realize there’s a handful of better cartridges. It’s makes me upset the 270,240 and 257 wby isn’t as popular as the 270 win or 308. Got my 257 8 years ago and I’ve taken a handful of whitetail, 2 black bears, an elk and a bighorn sheep. Longest shot was 300 yards. Every animal I’ve taken with it no matter the range both lungs turned into jelly.

@@madscientistgunworks2987 Exactly. Roy necked out the 378 to make the 416 and 460. His brother has since necked it down for the 30-378 and the 338-378. Lots of wildcat loads with this case as well. Always hoped for a 8mm-378 just to round it off.

Hi FB, Thank you. For ammo I have steel filing cabinets - just like for an office - but no papers - just ammo. The guns are in several vaults - it isn't as bad as it might seem : )

For me, the Vanguard is the best value on the market today. I have a 257 Roy and a 6.5 creedmore, both will shoot 1/2in groups at 100yds with my reloads. My daughter has a Vanguard carbine in 7-08 that is also very accurate. Never wanted, or needed a Mk 5 as the price does not justify any improvement over the Vanguard. Just my thoughts!

I’ve got a 300 Weatherby Mag it’s the old German made JP Sauer barrel. I’ll be honest I haven’t even had the time to put scope on it 😂. It’s one I purchased from a good friend and it’s been well taken care of I would go as far as to say a set in a closet for decades it’s got very little signs of use. Oh and by the way I love your videos and you are always a pleasure to watch. Plethora of knowledge!

Thank you. I’ve always been fascinated with Weatherby rifles. The first one I bought, over 40 years ago, is a 22 LR. It’s magazine fed. It’s finicky, but that’s ok. It’s a Weatherby. I also have a 257 Accumark.

My father was born in South Gate ,California, where Weatherby started. I now own Dads 1955,Winchester model 70, Chambered in Weatherby 300mag. he Hunted 40 deer seasons with same gun, never changed Balvar, Bausch & lomb Scope.my son will inherit that rifle. thanx for informative non Testosterone saturated Videos. [planning on buying A vanguard when possible.]

Your Dad knew what's what - that 70 in the 300 can do everything. 40 deer seasons - I love that - a longer run than most of us; and your son will have something with meaning that lasts. All the best to you Red.

Great video as always. I dont own a Weatherby but its on the list to get. I was in my local gun store today and they were putting out several Mosin Nagant rifles. The prices were all 409.00 a piece. Wow..... I paid 100.00 for each of mine and my Mosins look a hell of allot better. Guns are always a great investment.. The ammo russian spam cans i have i paid 65.00 for and the gun stores near me are selling them for 250.00 now. Its crazy... Thanks again for all the great work you do..

Really enjoy your videos, worked for a gunsmith as a youth, been hooked on collecting ever since. I have an old 1903A3 all original...cleaning it I had the butt pkaye off, found a peice of paper folded up neatly and placed on the stock was a person's name and address....looked up the person he had passed away several years prior to me purchasing the weapon. Best regards Shoe in SW Oregon.

That is an awesome book. I think I got it off eBay. Roy was way ahead of his time and so persistent in becoming successful. The double radius I think is very neat (maybe so gunsmiths would have a harder time chambering his calibers). I’m glad the weatherby company is still private and family owned as well, and coming out with new stuff (6.5-300 weatherby). Weatherby rifles have always gotten away from me, hopefully in the near future I’ll get one, not practical for hunting in Pennsylvania, but I’d like to go out west or maybe move out west at some point

@ I don’t see any reviews with actual accuracy tests on youtube. I wonder if the accuracy is improved over standard Vanguard actions due to the heavy barrel.

I totally agree about the Weatherby rifle, have several from Vanguards to Mark Vs. My favorite caliber is .300 and 30/378 both are tack drivers and usable on most anything in North America

I saw a Weatherby Mark V Classic (beautiful rifle) offered for sale at a gun site. It's chambered in .416 Weatherby Magnum. The add had this to say... "This gun has a problem, as it is not Earth friendly as it will emit a lot of green house gases, nitrous oxide and methane and will leave a large trailing cloud of carbon. If you shoot this piece a lot, in good conscience you will need to plant a tree. "
@jgordon54084 жыл бұрын
Now when you say "Classic" I think back to my ex-wifes grandfather. He had been a gunsmith since before WWII and continued for a little over sixty years. Man made some of the best Springfield and Mauser custom rigs I have ever had the opportunity to drool over. One day I mentioned Weatherby and he chuckled. He pulled out a Frankenstein short stocked bare wood old remmy in 300 Weatherby that loved compressed 220 grainers and giving scope bite he had. Said if I could fire 3 shots and not bleed he would show my something special. A much younger me made the 3 and he smiled and disappeared into another room to emerge with the sweetest prize. An original Mauser modded Weatherby made in his garage and signed. I was only allowed to look and briefly fondle it before it was wiped down and wisked away to parts unknown. Balance, fit and finish were bar none and the action was like silk panties on prom night. Was a work of art and the old man used it as a benchmark for making his rigs. I own several MK V's and love them.

Nice pleasant informed presentation - and thanks for not blasting our ears with cheap rock at the start! In 1978 I was in the Yokosuka Naval Base PX when I found myself staring at a wall of Weatherby Mark 5 rifles. Turns out we could transport firearms purchased at the PX back to the states via the Gunnar Mates on the ship. I briefly agonized at the about $275 prices, and finally blenched. On E4 pay and newly married. I regret that.
