Little trick I learned is if you're needing a step to reach the engine in the taller trucks, and you're near an air compressor, just dump the air out of the front tires to lower front of truck a few inches while you're working on it, then just air them back up when you're done.

Andy, you’re one of the good ones and it’s so frustrating when bad things happen to good people. As you disassembled the components I was curious about what brand of lifters you were using. But instead of blaming the product, you did the right thing by taking full responsibility for the wounded Hammerhead Boss. It was sounding strong until the converter problem allowed the rpm’s to shoot to the moon. A rev limiter will definitely help the situation. Valve float will surely limit the amount of rpm’s but it’s not a recommended method 🤷♂️.

May I suggest a Revlimiter until test and tuning is complete? Rev limiter: A rev limiter is a device fitted in modern vehicles that have internal combustion engines. They are intended to protect an engine by restricting its maximum rotational speed, measured in revolutions per minute (RPM).
@autonomous_collective Жыл бұрын
PS, I saw you mentioned it further in the video after I wrote comment. - Regards
@richardtibbetts574 Жыл бұрын
I think Andy knows what a rev limiter is. I used to have a 74 Ford F250 4x4 “Highboy” with a 390 in it. I had a Pertronix distributor and ignition system that featured a rev limiter. For a mildly built 390, I decided to be safe and set it at 5,000 rpm. For the most part, except for the 427 side oilers built for stock car or drag racing, the FE series engine family don’t like to rev that high. Rev limiters are the cat’s pajamas though. That coupled with an oil accumulator and low oil pressure switch, go a long way to safeguarding your engine.
@matthewnosal6893 Жыл бұрын
Yeah I think Andy by looking at his engine knows what a Rev limiter is… Good grief.

From the video it looks like there is a pretty good amount of angularity meaning the push rod doesn't come up exactly straight up from the pushrod cup. Did it contact the lifter and break it? Maybe when it floated a valve??? I'll bet you can find push rods that have a smaller tube diameter close to the lifter for extra clearance. I'm glad it's not all torn up! Good luck!

Andy, why would that part of the lifter body break out? And the the other side is also cracked It doesn’t look like it should really see much hoop stress, was there a contact mark on the pushrod? Was the pushrod bent? I know you are blaming yourself and the over rev but I wonder if that lifter was heat treated correctly
@UnityMotorSportsGarage Жыл бұрын
with this setup on the exhaust. the more lift you run the closer the pushrod gets to edge to the lifter. This engine was built to run at 7500 rpm and that is it. once the converter let loose it reved to 8600 floating the valves pushrod made contact and the rest is history. the pushrod is fine. this was just a simple mistake on my part and the Progression Ignition is going back in! hope this helps Andy

Those old comp rollers are tough as nails, that’s why they’re so pricey. Too bad you’re dealing with that pushrod angle and small space or a rev kit might help stabilize everything on top. You are damned lucky you caught that brother. We lost the first NHRA Heritage Series championship in 7.0 Eliminator by 1 point due to a tie bar breaking. It turns out that the set of ultra high quality rollers (14 of them are still in service) never had the nuts steaked and loctited from the manufacturer causing a recall… anyone can make a mistake and I stand behind those products even now but it was a hard pill to swallow. You’ll be fooled thinking you broke a rocker since the motor will run but this particular motor it went all bad and debris went down the front drain backs and broke the bottom timing gear (SBC with BBC Snout, they have a thin gear and key and I don’t recommend them in blown applications anymore). We raced awful hard that year and had a lot of learning experiences (My rookie year as a crew chief) I wouldn’t trade any of it for 1,000,000.00 bucks. Much love and respect man, I hope you can prevent that from happening again.
