Universal Audio just officially enter the world of DAWs... Luna is now untethered. Universal Audio's LUNA just had an update. It's now possible to use the DAW without being connected to Universal audio interfaces. So you can now use LUNA anywhere. That's a big deal in the DAW world now opening LUNA up to potentially a much wider audience. I'm excited to see how other companies like Avid with Pro Tools may respond to something like this. If you are producing music, mixing, or mastering, this seemingly small change does have the potential to shake things up.

It would be awesome if they could make Luna go to windows. However, As a former windows user, Switching to Mac was the best decision of my life when it comes to operating DAW systems. It just feels easier than before. I don’t have any evidence to support my feelings but just wanted to throw it out there. At first I did not want to make the switch but ended up really benefiting from it. I’m not saying that it would benefit others, depends on the person I’d say!

I love UAD. I started with the the first Apollo and now use the Apollo 16x with my console. I use the twin with my laptop for creating in different places. Luna is great and the extensions really make the sound come alive. If Luna was Eucon compatible I’d probably work in it full time. I still love pro tools which has been solid for a while now but Luna’s integration with Apollo is really dope. Anyway, Cool vid. I’m glad to see audio companies pushing forward.

Just recently switched from Pro Tools to Luna. Glad I did! I used Pro Tools for about 15yrs. So far, Luna has been a lot less glitchy, and the workflow is a lot better for my needs. Most importantly, I don’t have to pay a premium for bug fixes. Got tired of paying subscription fees for Avid to fix their own glitches. Since a lot of shortcuts are the same with Luna and Pro Tools, the switch has not been painful. And Luna works natively with Apple Silicon! Now I don’t have to pay Avid for a Native Silicon update.

I was a long time Logic user who’s been using Luna exclusively for almost 2 years. I just felt at home using it in ways I never did before with logic or Cubase. I mix faster and my music sounds and feels better, and I’m doing less processing with plugins overall (the console and tape extensions kill…gain stage hard into them to get into the red on the VUs, and stage down after them before plugin chains…it make a massive difference). Luna can be slow to load and unload sessions, and can be buggy requiring machine restarts, but it’s worth that pain by a mile.

What are the concrete practical advantages of Luna? It sounds like you're saying that it's the built-in console and tape emulations? Is it just that it saves you time loading up a bunch of emulations to make your session sound "analog"? I ask because workflow-wise I don't have any real issues with Logic. But I am definitely open to trying new things.

Today is Nov 29, 2023 and I must truly say, you were absolutely correct. UAD is killing it with LUNA being free and the change to Native Plugins. The fact that now a lot of key commands are exactly like Pro Tools and Ableton makes it so easy for new users. Best DAW around.

I'm fully in the UA ecosystem. Have been for a while and have exclusively used LUNA since summer 2020. I really love it as a former Pro Tools user. It's a really good move by UA, even if it's coming a bit late. I personally love the fact that so many recording/music related companies are in mad competition for people's business. I mixed with Luna the other day. Mannnnnn once they add the VCA faders it's a wrap!!!! I'M NOT A TECH HEAD but yes it is a flexible program... If it add a few more features that it competitor has like you say they will take action. I'm glad it works with any interface. I have my second rig to do mobile recording and because its a bit costly less than having multiple UAD units I tend to use the Apollo for mixing and mastering mostly.

Well that opens up the option then to actually test and use Luna, when you are a UAD customer. Since I was expecting that when I initially bought the UAD pcie card for the Mac Pro. Instead it said it didn't work with that, so perhaps now I get the chance to try it out.

I’ve been an Ableton user from 2010 and 3 years ago roughly , I bought my Apollo twin x. I really ❤it. I’m not sure I could go back to a normal interface. That said , my workflow in Ableton in arrangement view is now compromised when I mix in Luna. The liberty of dragging and dropping files into my session from the window on the left I really need to see this in Luna 😢. I can live with whatever else is going on 😊.

They've also been opening up their plugins. They now have native versions of about 20 of their plugins. It seems like they add a new one each month. I have the Spark subscription, and while it's not without its bugs annoyances, it's great to be able to use UAD plugins without UAD hardware. I would be open to trying Luna, though it may be counterproductive for me given how much time I have invested in Logic. I even have a desk mat with all the Logic shortcuts printed on it. I also have no real issues with Logic. Would be curious to know what the concrete, practical advantages are of Luna.

In short - Hardware integration. It’s better to use Luna if you own one of the Apollos, as it works as an extension of the UAD interfaces.
@audi0d00d
@audi0d00d Жыл бұрын
I invested in the UA ecosystem years ago when they released the first Apollo. The Apollos are really rock-solid interfaces, and the UA analog emulation plugs are the best thing to the original when you need that Neve, SSL, or API tone & feel. Since moving away from Pro Tools, Luna is my go-to. The workflow makes sense, the DAW does what it's supposed to, and I've yet to encounter anything that dead-stops a session. UA slowly moving to a native setup is going to crush Pro Tools in the long run. While I'd still like to see them implement some more bells and whistles similar in tune to Ableton Live (cater more to digital and electronic music creation), I'm rather confident that UA and Luna will be considered the next "industry standard" when it comes to studio tracking and mixing.
@jan_07
@jan_07 Жыл бұрын
Luna is nice, looks like a console if you buy the add-ons like 1073, API, Studer etc. So one look at the interface, you can see what tweaks you’ve done for each track and if you have a huge monitor, it’s so visually transparent. If they can add Mackie control for controlling those add-ons without the mouse, I’m sold. As of now, I’m with Harrison/SSL’s Mixbus32c that can do both with their on-screen console modules and Mackie control integrated. But Mixbus32c doesn’t have the preamp hardware integration like Luna does, so that’s what I lose 😅

I've been interested in Apollo interface for a couple of years now. The biggest thing that has stopped me from pulling the trigger is the need for so much DSP. I absolutely love the look and functions of the Apollo desk top interface and have almost pulled that trigger so many times. Getting Luna free with the interface was another reason that I was interested but still I wait. I was somewhat exited when UA introduced the Volt 476p but just can't get over the awful look of it. So still I wait. I would love to see a really cool looking Apollo desktop interface that doesn't rely on DSP. Being able to purchase Luna without having to use their hardware might get me to change (depending on price). I've really wanted to try their plugins also but I hate subscriptions. I left Pro Tools for that very reason. I'm simply not paying a monthly subscription for plugins. I'm excited to see where UA goes from here. Glad to see their plugins have gone native.

It seems to me that within a matter of years, UA was able to flip their place in the market for the betterment of their future. Before, UA plugins could only be used if you had a UA device...then they introduced Spark, letting versions of their plugins run native on any DAW. Huge! Now everyone can have "that UA sound". Then they released Luna for everyone to use. Granted, it's not a huge deal for those with an already established ecosystem, but for the weekenders or hobbyist, Luna is the best free DAW out there (opinion). Before, they didn't have an easy "on-ramp" for intro producers or musicians that didn't cost a crap-ton of money...now UA is more accessible. I'm a big fan.

I was just as excited as you a few years ago when UAD released LUNA. The thing is, LUNA is still so very far away with having the functionality of all other DAWs. For example, there is no multi outs for virtual instruments, there are no delay compensated hardware inserts, at all, there is no ARA2 integration, the midi editing is awful. Luna just isn't anywhere near being able to take on other DAWs that have, and have had all the above functionality for years. And what's more, there's no confirmation that any of that stuff will ever be in LUNA, they just won't say! I tried turning off my Apollo's with the latest version of LUNA and running it under Core Audio. No dice. It doesn't work. LUNA is great for what is is, but it's still only half baked and UAD doesn't move quickly or even give a roadmap or any indication, so you can't plan for the future, you don't really know what you're investing in. I've just moved to RME interfaces and will sell my Apollo X's, but I bought all the plugins. I can't use the DSP versions in Cubase 12, under silicon because UAD still, after all these many years are not VST 3, which has been the standard for so many years. There is no guarantee that LUNA will be properly Native anytime soon. The UAD native plugin list is never going to be comprehensive because most of the good stuff is developed by 3rd parties that already sell those plugins, so why would they allow UAD to compete with them on their own stuff? As I said, a few years ago now, I was excited by LUNA and the potential, but after years of waiting for them to deliver the functionality for LUNA, they just haven't. I wouldn't advise anyone to look at using LUNA until it's at least capable of delivering the stuff we've all come to expect in DAWS, because they aren't cheap and they won't let you know what's in the pipeline, so you can't plan for the future.

Yes you can. At least now. You don’t need any UAD hardware at all if you use native plugins. You will need an Apollo or Satellite if you want to use UAD-2 plugins though. And, for some reason, to purchase the neve summing. I found all the various compatibility quirks a little confusing at first so buy slow if you’re uncertain 😊
@Pintosonic
@Pintosonic 26 күн бұрын
Well, I think it’s a good thing that Universal Audio is opening up their ecosystem. However even a year after the release of your video, Luna is not fully independent from Universal Audio hardware. Even if it’s true that all Luna extensions are running natively and do not need any UAD-2 hardware connected to run, there are some licensing deals that Universal Audio did not worked out with some of their partners like Neve that prevent them from selling you some Luna extensions if you don’t own UAD-2 hardware. For example, if you don’t have any UAD-2 hardware registered on your UA account, you can install Luna on your system. You will have a 30 day trial period of all Luna extensions and UA native plugins that are included in Luna Pro bundle plus the Neve summing extension. Now if you decide you like it and want to buy the Luna Pro bundle and the Neve summing extension that you’ve been using for 30 days, you will not be able to buy the Neve summing extension unless you have at least one UAD-2 hardware registered to your account even if this extension does runs natively and doesn’t even run on UA hardware. So people have to know that not having UA hardware will limit what is available to you in Luna because of those crappy licensing deals with third party partners.

I'm a long time Logic user but last summer I dove into the deep end with Luna. I even spent the money (a lot of money) on the extensions. While I love the sound, the low latency, the workflow, I'm still leary of the future with Luna. I'm very suspicious of why they haven't put out any new instructional or those office hours videos on youtube in 11 months. Just under a year since they did anything on Luna. I've asked about this on forums and the only answer I get is "they just put out an update" . I'm not talking about updates. I'm talking about actually promoting the product. Luna isn't even listed on their home page on their website. It's like it's an afterthought to them and for that I'm still sticking with Logic for now. Do you have any insight into this?
@68Snaps
@68Snaps Жыл бұрын
As a user, I think they don't want to promote Luna too early on. The feature set is not yet comparable to Protools, Cubase, Logic, etc... I think they're waiting for the product to be ready, or they're going another route: let the users talk about it, let them do the promotion. Also Luna is now very compatible with SSL's UF8 which is a big (silent) move forward. They're getting there, in the shadows... ;-)

Prediction: Once Lune is ready to move forward from a public beta with core audio it will launch as part of a bundle subscription with Spark. And the only way to own it without a subscription is to buy UA hardware. This way they don't alienate long-time UA users and they will use the subscription model to attract new users to buy hardware to get tight integration with Lune if they want it.

Game changing? I checked out Luna for quite a long time. It's set up with a certain analog kind of workflow, and does feel nice, but it's something that I've already set up as a template within my own DAW that I've been using for 30 years, know like the back of my palm, and works well. And plugins and DAWs do not determine success in the music industry. Content does. Performances do. Game-changing will be when your DAW can do that kind of stuff for you.

I instead bought Presonus Studio One Professional... works seamless with my UAD, Softube Console mixing system and my Faderport 16. all tightly intergraded and I dont need a WiFi connection and can work anywhere.

Lucas Achilles heel is terrible comping ability. The need to adapt Logic or Studio one like work flow.

Lol. No chance! Luna will do stuff all and will never establish itself as a leading DAW.

And it still won't work on windows, why do you sell you plugins and interfaces to us at very premium prices but not your DAW ? . Piss on universal audio I'll spend my money elsewhere

It's a Con. LUNA should be free and it's not. They RIP you Off by making you rebuy plugins and and an API console plugin you already owned as a channel strip, then you have to purchase it again. There gonna keep adding plugins to it to make it insanely expensive to own and use the way you should. Not even Apple as Cheap as they are would charge for a Logic update.

Just make it available on Windows before trying to change any game. Do the basics first.

"Be nice posting"... lol, seriously? Coming from an old fart that has been staring at computer monitors for 28 yeas: Luna is 28 years too late... Let's leave Luna to the UA fanboys. When you get to Nuendo level, we can talk

I can’t see them doing that. They are so deep in the plug-in game. I can see them developing it and supporting R&D just for the sake of it being a loss leader to lead to plug-in sales. The purchasing process built into the daw makes it too easy.

LUNA has been a completelly failure. Nosense and nobody. Now they are reacting but wrong and late, no windows, you still need appollos to run 5 or 6 plugins, quite stupid the whole thing.

But ultimately competition and decent products mean better stuff for us EVEN IF your not in the universal ecosystem. Which I am not. I'm still excited about what could change in the industry. Do you have any UA gear?
