You'd have to wait till they're lower to the ground before pressing s/clp. Alternatively you can skip the lk since its only a tiny pinch of more damage.

I may be wrong, but wouldn't Canis Major do more damage in that situation? as instead of picking up the chair, you could skip to the cr.Mp and land on it with CM to do 250 bonus damage

It would do less damage because Canis does the least out of all of his grab enders and it would do even less because it would be burstable.
