Despite the hardships we are living through, there are two things about our elections that dealing with COVID-19 has taught us: we have a tremendous need for ownership and participation in decision-making, and that ideas previously off the table can and need to be discussed. E.J. Dionne, renowned journalist and now Harvard professor, is a proponent of making participation in elections a requirement of all citizens in American democracy. Australia (since 1924) and 25 other countries have this requirement - and far higher levels of participation. Is now a time for that discussion to begin here?
