This is the Universal Pictures logo from the 75th anniversary in 1990. Back to the Future III was the first movie to show it.

Goldsmith was the composer of the late 90s Logo. Horner was the composer of the early 90s Logo. Both are really great composers.

We were located on the Raleigh Studios Lot in Hollywood for 12 years where we produced and directed the Paramount Pictures logo (1984), The 75th Anniversary Logo, the 20th Century Fox logo and the RKO Pictures logo. It was a lot of fun at the time and felt very fortunate to have gotten that experience.

Don't worry. The complete "Back To The Future" trilogy is now available on DVD & Blu-ray & it might still be in retail and all legal sets have a special 4th disk with more insight in the films than meets the eye of a typical movie viewer and/or BTTF fan.

The Universal Pictures 75th Anniversary theme was written by Academy Award Winner James Horner. Of course, the original theme had already been around for a while, but James was able to expand on it...I'm not sure if James wrote the "standard" piece or not. The most recent theme for Universal Pictures (starting in 1997) was written by the late Jerry Goldsmith, another Academy Award winning composer.

I remember seeing this before a ton of movies back around 1990-1992 or so, it seemed like every movie I rented had this at the beginning around that time. I actually love this logo/ident as it totally brings me back to a time when life was a lot simpler, I was about 10 and I'll always remember the awesome music and the spinning globe with the "75th Anniversary" being written in fancy writing above the logo and world. Awesome stuff!

No, we used 'The Chandler Group' located in Venice at the time to do the production. We hired a guy out of Washington who was a fine artist and math expert to build the globe which was the size of a small house. We laid 100 feet of track and shot each letter of the UNIVERSAL, which was made of bronze, one frame at a time. This was all done

The "75th Anniversary" variant only appeared on Universal films shot in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Backdraft, which was shot in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio, didn't have this logo, though its logo was featured on the original poster.

There is surely a 2.35:1 version. This is from the BTTF III DVD. The movie was originally filmed in 4:3. For the DVD release they cropped it down to 16:9. That's why it looks so ... cropped.

LJK193...You are 100% correct. It was James Horner and not John Williams who wrote this theme...I stand corrected and thank you for pointing this out as it encouraged me to research Horner a little more. I much prefer this Ident theme to the one Universal currently uses...it just sound more "magical' to me. :)

@bgoblue Research says that universal was originally founded in 1912, so the company isn't wrong to release their newest logo now, but they should have released this logo in 1987 because that year was 75 years after 1912.

2015 - The year featured in BttF 2, will be the Studio's 100th anniversary. I think they planned that. Doc Brown even changes his choice of years to travel to the future from 25 (85-2010) to 30 (85-15) at one point. . . If they remember they may do something. Good nostalgic marketing. Also, 4?

They're celebrating two different anniversaries: The 1990 one was the 75th anniversary of the 1915 opening of Universal City Studios, while the 2012 one was the 100th anniversary of the actual creation of the studio, when the Universal Film Manufacturing Company was created in 1912.

@volgirl2477 Because 2015 is the year they went to in Back to the Future II and this is the first time they used this 75th anniversary logo was in Back to the Future III. I first saw the 1960's-1980's globe with Land Before Time and trailers for "The Wizard" and "Twins" as well as on TV. The first time i saw the logo sans anniversary was american tail 2. What was the last movie to feature the Universal early 90's logo before Lost World came out? I think it was Dante's Peak.
