Universal Rules of Engagement - Dslyecxi's TTPs - Arma 3 Tutorial/Guide

In this, I explain my thoughts on the rules of engagement as a universal concept that applies at all times and only needs modifications/changes for specific mission styles.

Q: What server am I playing Arma games on, who are these people, and can you join?
A: It's the private server for my community, Shack Tactical. As of 2014 we've been around for eight years, and I wouldn't trade it for anything - we have a fantastic memberbase and it makes for amazing gameplay in Arma and elsewhere. You can read more about us here: www.shacktac.com
Q: What mods does ShackTac use in Arma?

Q: Does ShackTac play mostly coop or mostly PvP/adversarial in Arma?
A: We do a mix of about 70% adversarial and 30% coop - both offer unique experiences and are a blast to play.
Q: How long have you been playing the Arma series?
A: I've been here from the start, with my Operation Flashpoint experience beginning with the demo's release in 2001. I went into the US Marine Corps shortly after (no relation!) and in 2004 I started playing OFP in multiplayer. 2006 saw me found ShackTac, which started in OFP and then transitioned through Arma 1, Arma 2, and finally, Arma 3. I hope to continue this for a long time into the future, as well as share the ride with viewers like you, as corny as that sounds!

Excellent video, I enjoyed it very much. One of my favourite aspects of Dslyecxi's videos is how varied they are in style and content from each other. More variety seems to always be better on this channel, and serves so well to help make it distinct from all the other ShackTac channels. One of the things that you probably understand implicitly but don't state explicitly is that Arma AI can often be considerably more accurate at ranged fire than players, especially when both sides are exchanging fire. While a player often times is concerned about living, an AI combatant will just terminate with extreme prejudice. Opening fire on a distant AI enemy can sometimes be the cause of significant damage to a friendly unit by alerting their terminator-like combat instincts.

This is very helpful, I really wanted to know how everyone on Shacktac played. I used to suck at playing the first Arma, well I kind of sucked at finding servers that offered realism which was the problem. But even when I did, I still approached everything as if I was playing Battlefield...but I'm going to keep this information in mind whenever I play Arma again.

Very informitive, as always. I don't know why I enjoy watching things like this, I get enough Power Points related to these things already. I suppose your videos are more interesting to watch then Death-By-Power Point. If there is one thing everyone in the Military can rely on, it's Power Point.

Keep it up Dslyecxi, I really want to join ShackTac but im a bit young, 14 to be exact! but that doesn't stop me from getting more familiar with military terms/techniques etc, I would apply but dont know if i'm too young :), either way you guys have been alive for over 6 years! Yeah, a list of dates on which ST played matches, with each entry showing all videos taken by the various participants (if any). ST members who upload vids would then have access to embed their videos into the appropriate date entries. It's probably not even complicated to write the code for that. It'd be almost self-organizing list!

I kinda do like missions that implement International Humanitarian Law (IHL) like in the Laws of War DLC for Arma 3, it's a fun role playing thing i guess.

One thing I've been having trouble with, is differentiating friend and foe... Guessing that's a complex thing when you have dumb AIs for allies, who can't communicate over radio. (Been playing the Arma 2 campaign with some friends 'cause our pcs can't handle Arma 3)

Alright I'm sorry, I've read your comment on the subject that "ShackTac" is a tiny community which doesn't will to expand and you said the number of members is very limited from server capacity. 400 is actually not that tiny.

I have noticed that your cooperative and adversarial missions tend to hover ~100-120 members participating. Is this a restriction based on what the engine/server can handle? If so, would you be willing to conduct missions with larger player counts, given the capability?

Not really, Most online shooters do not require you to contact the rest of your team before you shoot an enemy, at least not in public lobbies they don't. Generally speaking in most fps games it's "He's an enemy, I'm going to shoot him now."

Dsly, I'm a new player at ArmA 2 CO, and I would love to join ShackTac. I have a mic, my mother language is Portuguese, but I can speak English. I have Flight Skills, EVACs with Chinok and Little Bird (I'm a real life Commercial Heli Pilot, and I was in the Brazilian Army, as a Transport Heli Pilot. ). So, how is the process to join in? And Can I join? Thanks. PS: I have a low end PC, so I experience a little bit of LAG, and I play at Low- Mid at 30 Fps, will this complicate the join process?

unarmed enemy might not be too uncommon, in a scenario where you are dealing with insurgents like I often do, they have guys armed only with radio's standing in plain view often times waiting for you to pass by so they can report your position to their allies, it annoys the piss outta me like you wouldn't believe.

You killed them because: A- enemy researchers that have no value to your assets or research teams B- you do not have the numbers or vehicles to secure and extract those prisoners C- your mission was time sensitive to stop the rocket launch that would attack your country, which prioritizes above the safety of surrendering enemies.
