Great ;;job, I used a linear actuator on mine $21 on Amazon $7 for waterproof switch.

Great ideas Frank, I am going to use these parts. Please ignore all the haters, armchair warriors just hate good stuff.

Good concept. The only issue is with the way steering is mounted. Too many edges for fishing line to hang up on. I’m working on one, in my head only right now, but I’m going to try n mount mine vertically on the inside of the side and run my steering lines underneath the top rail and pop them out in the back behind the clock pit. Sorry I’m just a meat freak and it’s less to hang up on and possibly loose fish. I do like the parts you listed. I was thinking 4” pulley and a cutting board to make my own.

Yeah, that kayak didn't really have a clean spot to mount that steering assembly. On my other kayak I used a 3d printed plate that I made and it mounts flush. For kayaks with a rounded hull or that are a bit harder to work around, I'd suggest this steering assembly: pelicansport.com/products/rudder-lever-mh10-ps3009?variant=40055505748173¤cy=USD&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4fP7rP_I_QIVrBatBh3klADXEAQYAiABEgKf7PD_BwE Everything else mounts up the same, but the steering handle and mounting is MUCH cleaner.

I am installing my motor the same way, but am curious what screw was it that you used to feed the wire through? I already have the Pelican catch 110 HD2 and it already has the built in steering lever from the rudder. Great explanation btw.

Hey Frank, thanks for the video. I read in the comments that you replaced the cable ends with carabiners. Good move. I ride/work on bikes a lot. The cable ends you initially attached are only for keeping the ends of the cable from fraying. You would actually want to clamp down on the cable itself as it would probably slip out of the cable ends with any water pressure when the kayak is moving. Very good, informative DIY video. I didn't know there was a steering mechanism available that reasonable in cost. Is it still working for you?

It's been working really well on 2 of my kayaks. I have used the steering and motor setup in pretty much all of my videos since this one. Pelican does have a newer model steering assembly, that doesn't require a base plate, and the front of the cable guides are fixed to the steering assembly so you don't have to use the plastic clips that came with this one, but it is over twice the price of the one I used for my kayaks.

The other steering option from pelican just attaches to any rail all self contained like I did much easier

I got that one for my other kayak, but it wasn't available at the time of this project

Hey Frank, a good backing material is cutting board, it drills nicely.

HDPE cutting board from Walmart or the dollar tree would work, but ultimately, I ended up 3D printing a plate for it.

Instead of using acrylic board use cutting board and get the good one quarter inch thick works great.
@OutdoorEngineering2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's probably a better idea. I had the acrylic laying around so I thought I'd give it a go, clearly not the best option

I got rid of that kayak a year ago but my friend still has it and that's been 10 years and still working with a Walmart cutting board

Ngl, I was using a gopro on a tripod. Didn't really have a zoom option. Gunna have to talk to my volunteer camera person and see if they are willing to film the next one so I can get better angles.

Something I did after running it like this for a while is, I got rid of the bolts that I used for the end of the cables, and I replaced them with carabiners. I picked up 2 small carabiners and a couple cable crimps from ace hardware and used those to have a quick disconnect to easily take the motor off the kayak if I needed to. Same way it is shown in this image. images.app.goo.gl/ywX2DWWhWfSjNgcF8
