If you've read the book then you'll know how much of a "fingers down the throat Disneyisation" this film is. The first incarnation of this dog in the book was arresting with the cute narration of the dog juxtaposed against it trying to figure out the gas chamber it was in. That was a thud, and only about 5 pages into the story. Odd that the film makers may have thought that this might be too harrowing and gut-wrenching a scene yet didn't think twice about nearly actually drowning the German Shephard.....
