The tournament overall is fantastic. Gohan is fine in it. Everyone on Universe 7 gets big moments, including him and Piccolo. Gohan has bigger feats in the Tournament of Power in the manga than in the anime though.

IIRC in the manga they don't have cute untransformed states just their fighting forms. I don't get the hate. I didn't find universe 2's transformations or attacks any sillier than most anime's or even most of the combatants in Tournament of Power in general. Used to hang a lampshade around 'why not attack mid mystic girl transformation' for a laugh, sure, but not attacking while someone screams for five minutes is a hallmark of Dragon Ball. (Though screaming IS generally cooler).
