Hi, thanks for watching the video. To be honest with you I’m not 100% sure and I don’t want to give you any wrong information. But I do know that some universities will only score the top 6 or top 8 GCSEs for example. I think you will just have to check the scoring criteria for GCSEs at each university before you apply. I don’t think only having 6 GCSEs would stop you from getting into medical school, especially if you do well on your A levels.

Hey, well done on those amazing grades. You should be proud of yourself. I don’t see why you can’t apply to liverpool. Although your score is on the low side, typically a “low” UCAT score is when it is 610 or below. Your band 1 also puts you at an advantage. Hi, thanks for your comment. I’m not too sure about the vocational subjects being looked at the same as the rest of your GCSEs. I don’t want to give you any wrong information, but this is something your teachers will definitely know the answer to. With your UCAT score I’d say consider universities with the lowest thresholds e.g. Keele, Sunderland, Aston, Kent & Medway. Your chances of getting in may be higher here compared to Birmingham and Liverpool.

@hibbear
@hibbear 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for watching the video and for your comment. It’s difficult to say because there is always a chance for you to get into Birmingham but it is difficult to quantify into high or low. Birmingham has a calculator on their website that allows you to put your grades and UCAT score in and it lets you know how likely you are to get an interview. It’s not 100% accurate though and if it says you are unlikely to get an interview, that does still mean you do have a small chance. So maybe use that not to make your decision but maybe just to guide your decision. Cardiff probably would be “safer” based on the information they put out about their selection process, but again you may or may not get in there too, no one can give you a definitive answer. Make your decision based on your personal preferences as well, such as which part of the UK you want to move to, which course structure you like etc. I’m sure you’ll make the right one :)

@hibbear
@hibbear 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, you’re not bothering me at all so please don’t apologise! I know exactly how you feel because I got a very similar score to you (635) and even though I knew it was average I also knew it wasn’t high enough to apply to some of the London universities that I wanted to apply to. That meant I ended up mainly applying to universities that don’t look at the UCAT much. I still applied to Manchester though because even though they prioritise applicants in the top 3 deciles, they do welcome applications of students below this as well. For these students who do not meet the threshold, like I was, they will take a holistic approach which means they will look at your UCAT score together with your SJT band, GCSEs, A-Level predictions etc in mind. I had very high GCSE grades and A-level predictions so this worked out well for me. With what you’ve told me, I think it’s definitely possible for you to get an interview at Manchester. I don’t think it’s a bad idea at all, especially if it’s a university that you really wanted to apply to. From my personal experience, I’d encourage you to go for it. I know it seems like your score is quite a bit below others which I felt like too, but remember that the UCAT isn’t everything and all the other parts of the application can make you a strong applicant 🙂 you might find this page helpful where the university has written some information about this holistic assessment to selecting applicants under “What if my score doesn’t meet the threshold?”: www.bmh.manchester.ac.uk/study/medicine/apply/ucat/

Hi, thanks for your comment. I may be wrong but I think the UCAS deadline for medicine/dentistry applications has passed? If not, you would want to consider universities that don’t consider the UCAT so either BMAT universities, or UCAT universities that don’t state a band cut off on their website. Cardiff is one of these universities. The majority of universities though require a minimum of band 3. I hope that helps a little.

Hi, as your score is quite low I would suggest maybe doing the BMAT or considering reapplying next year. I would really focus on getting your A level predictions this year and maybe consider redoing the UCAT next year. I know it doesn’t seem like it but the UCAT is actually the least important exam because you can retake it every year an unlimited number of times. Your academics are much more important and you should focus on continue doing well on those. Once you’ve got those you can give your full attention to the UCAT. If you really want to apply this year maybe you could consider Cardiff or Plymouth.

@hibbear 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon, thanks for watching the video. Please don’t be upset - well done for getting through revising for the UCAT as it is not easy at all. It is not easy to say yes or no as there are a couple different factors that go into it. I would say there are several universities that would definitely give you an interview based on your UCAT and academics. Mainly those mentioned in this video and you could also consider Queen’s University Belfast. A low UCAT is typically when your UCAT average is below 610 and yours is slightly above that. In terms of Manchester, it is difficult to say. Statistically yes you may increase your chances of getting into medical school if you use that space for another low UCAT university instead of Manchester. Manchester does have a cut off and they definitely prioritise those with a band 1 & 2. With that said though, I do know people doing medicine at Manchester with a UCAT lower than yours. Despite their cut off, they will sometimes take a holistic approach. Honestly at the end of the day of course no one can tell you for sure if you would get in or not. It’s about making an informed decision based off the information that they’ve given you. I think if you really want to go there then you could consider it. If heaven forbid you don’t get a place, you have 3 other universities that you will have applied to.

I’m thinking of applying to some of the following: Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, Nottingham and Kings. I know some of them are very unrealistic. Which would you suggest I get rid of and do you have any suggestions of other colleges? I’m afraid Manchester, Birmingham etc won’t take me because of my STJ :(
@hibbear
@hibbear 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching. Well done on completing your UCAT exam, it isn’t an easy one! It’s a bit of a tricky one because you’ve done well on your actual score but the SJT is band 3. It’s difficult to say which ones to get rid of your list because it’s not impossible to get into any of them and you still always have a chance. So I don’t want to tell you what to do and not to apply to certain medical schools because there’s always a possibility you could get in. Also there are a lot of other factors you need to consider in the decision such as if you like the course structure, which part of the country you want to move to etc. which only you will know best. I would say you shouldn’t think that Birmingham won’t take you because the algorithm they use to send out interviews is using GCSEs and UCAT scores, not the bands. They may then use the bands later on if they need to decide between students, but any of the medical schools can do that so this shouldn’t stop you from applying. Kings, Edinburgh and Bristol are known to usually prioritise the highest UCAT scores so may be ones to think twice about before applying. Nottingham will use your score and your band to give you points, but you do have a chance here especially if your GCSEs are high, because the points from the other sections can make up for the SJT band. For Manchester, according to their website all I can say is that they will consider your application. Glasgow is a good option as their website states last year they did not take SJT bands into consideration at all, and it’s likely to be similar this year. I hope that could be of some help :)

At the end of the week you come back together again to discuss what you’ve each found and consolidate your learning. I think it is a fantastic way of learning because it is how you would be learning in your professional life as a qualified doctor/dentist. It also allows you to do things independently but also get input from your colleagues if you are unsure about anything, rather than only one way or the other. I hope that helps!

@@hibbear Thank you for replying, 2/4 of my choices have this integrated into their school and I’m just worried I won’t like it. @hibbear
@hibbear 3 жыл бұрын
@@sooovo_ no worries at all I’m happy to answer all and any questions 🙂 so the amount of mandatory/supervised sessions are less than in traditional methods. In most traditional universities their schedule is 9-5 of lectures but with PBL/EBL it is around a 1.5 hour session at the start and end of the week, with a few lectures in the week relating to that topic. However, even though it seems like “less work” it is up to you how much depth you want to go into on certain topics and it can often end up being a lot of study. It is very self driven and independent, and there is not as much external encouragement to do the work (apart from you not wanting to look silly in the closing session), so you do really have to motivate yourself and it can be easy to get behind because of less accountability each day. There are supervisors in each EBL session and they will help you whenever you need it, but they do not usually check in with you throughout the week and you only see them in the sessions. You are always welcome to ask questions to/email any lecturers that may be giving a lecture that specific week and their contact details will always be provided in the lectures. In terms of depth, it is hard to say always how much you need to go into but it’s one of those things that when you start doing it you will get the hang of how much you need to know. For exams, there will be questions on the cases you have covered each week. This is all very specific to Manchester though and other universities may differ despite also doing EBL.

I think if you really want to apply to Liverpool maybe give it a go? For the other three you could maybe consider universities like Keele, Sunderland, Kent & Medway, QUB, Plymouth and Cardiff. If you don’t get into Liverpool then you’ll have these 3 other universities that you will have applied to that look even less at the UCAT. While I do think you would statistically may have a slightly higher chance of getting into medical school if you choose all 4 universities from the later list, I do think Liverpool isn’t impossible and could be worth trying. If you get in you definitely won’t regret it. But to answer your question, yes I do think you certainly have a chance. It will all be about strategic applying. Hey! Well done on getting through revising for the UCAT - it’s really not an easy exam. To be really honest with you as far as I am aware there are not really any universities that consider applicants with a band 4. Also your UCAT score itself is really quite low. If you are definitely wanting to apply this year then maybe consider Cardiff or QUB. But as far as I am aware all the other universities, even the low UCAT ones, will only take band 3 and above. I’d say your UCAT score does put you at a disadvantage this year but the important thing is your GCSEs and A levels because those are the exams you cannot easily retake. My advice would be to maybe take a gap year and redo the UCAT and apply next year. Focus on getting your predicted A level grades and you will be in a really strong position next year. I know it might not be what you were hoping to hear and a year out sounds like it’s going to be a really big deal but in the grand scheme of things a gap year doesn’t make any difference at all. Have you thought about doing the BMAT?

I got Band 2, score of 2290. Where should I apply?

I would prioritise the universities with the lowest thresholds e.g. Keele, Sunderland, Kent & Medway. If your academic grades are high you could also consider Cardiff or QUB.
