I'm British. I just don't understand the American system. I thought the point of higher education was to go to university/college and specialise in a specific subject and get a degree. How can you specialise in something if you have to do English, history, maths, the history of art?!
@sirbenjamaicad.64728 жыл бұрын
Its specialization in your last 2 years. Because US high schools have so many varieties, each University has to make sure each student has the ability and knowledge to specify, as some kids will and some wont upon entrance.
@LovewayKid8 жыл бұрын
Not everyone knows what they want to do when entering university. It's nice to have the opportunity to learn about numerous things before having to commit. Thats the reasoning behind elective, plus they're a way to expand your mind passed just the field you want to go into. Taking art at a Biomedical Sciences major was really relaxing and a good way to balance with my natural science courses.

The American Higher Education system is just for coin TBH. A waste of 2 of 4 years.

Joshua Mitchell me too, where I'm fron you have 8 years of middle and highschool where you're forved to take ~ 14-19 subjebts (depending on the school's curriculum) and don't get to chose anything apart from the 3rd or 4th language you'll learn in year 5(of the 8), so by the end of highschool, you have the best general knowledge you could possibly have, uni is for specification, why continue general knowledge, you gotta specify at some point
@sarahmotteram42447 жыл бұрын
the american education system is a year behind us so their first year of uni is like our last year of a level. Kids in america start school at age 6/7 where as here we start at 5/6. My friend has a conditional scholarship to UCLA and only has to get ABB to miss the first year of american uni

It depends how many topics you have to take. I think the US system is better because you can tailor your degree to suit your tastes, rather than finding out that you hate it and having to drop out for a year in order to start again at square one (I have multiple friends who ended up doing this). Furthermore it encourages broader education and means that humanities majors can at least dip into college level science and vice versa. Much better overall (if you exclude the price and the clearly extortionate textbook system).
@liamgalvin37428 жыл бұрын
we do the one subject in MUCH more detail though, equally stressful tbh

I'm absolutely blown away by how much you guys have to pay! I go to a Finnish uni, we don't have any fees and mostly can get the books from our library (which also means it's always a bit of a hunt to get them on time..). There is a mandatory fee for the students union (100€/year) and small fees for subject associations (10-50€/year). And we don't have dorms so have to rent, but the city has cheaper housing for students. And EVERY student gets financial support from the state. I get about 200€/month, still living at home. If you're renting and don't earn much, the amount is about double. To get this money you have to get enough study points per year, but that's not too much really. I feel incredibly lucky, writing this all out... Okay so basically guys, come to study in Finland 😅

And that money I mentioned you get to keep. Student loans are available as well on top of that

Wow!! That's amazing. I wish the US would value education like that. It's so depressing to leave school with tens of thousands of dollars in debt. People who go on to study to be a doctor, for example, have more years of schooling even and can end up with hundreds of thousands in debt. Such a bad influence on the nation's economy.

It's so frustrating the amount you have to pay to go to college in the US. I go to a public/state university so I have what is considered a LOW total cost of $20,000 a year. Most private universities (like the Ivy Leagues) cost upwards of $60,000 a year.
@MediaMushroom8 жыл бұрын
This is more to do with English Universities. In Scotland our degrees are 4-5 years long depending on the degree, and they are completely funded. There are also several bursaries available so if you're paying rent with your student loan you can still afford to live comfortably. Most people also choose three subjects in first year (including their main degree), continue two of them in second year and then focus on their main degree or a joint degree in their honours years. Also, the ancient universities tend to be more spread out around their cities than campus based; for example, Edinburgh University owns over 700 buildings around the city.

You guys are assuming that someone with a PhD is a good teacher. Teaching is a skill that is entirely different. I have multiple degrees(5) and some of the best instruction came from people with Masters Degrees. Some of my absolute worst classes were from idiots with a Doctorate. They were very knowledgeable in their field but had no clue how to disseminate the information and make it interesting. I had a calculus professor that was a genius and could do any math problem or scenario, however he could not teach what he knew to the class. We all just looked at each other and said we are screwed. He should have never been allowed to interact with students.
@bellapalmera9 жыл бұрын
Just to clarify the part about Masters degrees being 6 years in the US - the Masters program itself is only 2 years, the 6 years includes getting your 4 year bachelors degree first, which you have to have in order to get the Masters. I hope that makes sense to whoever is reading this!
@keepXonXrockin9 жыл бұрын
+bellapalmera that's good to know, I was pretty shocked at the MA programme being 6 whole years xD Here (Germany) it's roughly the same, 3 years BA, 2 years MA.
@dazzlechampion9 жыл бұрын
+keeponrockin A decent amount of masters degrees are also one year if taken full time.
@keepXonXrockin9 жыл бұрын
what would full time mean in that case? because German MA degrees that last 2 years are also mean to be full-time, just like a BA taking 3 years is a full-time course of studies.
@dazzlechampion9 жыл бұрын
+keeponrockin Full time BA in the US with no prior units carrying over from highschool is typically 4 years. a masters can be anywhere from one year to anywhere really. there's two types of masters: Taught and Research. Taught is the typical classroom and exam format, which means it has a scheduled beginning an end like regular school. Research is done when you finish the topic you are researching which then typically requires a thesis. The thesis is a rather large paper and can be a pretty hefty project. Even after you've done the research, typically you still must have the paper topic approved by a scholastic board of professors at W/e university your studying at. If they don't approve, you'll have to step back and to a certain extent start over. Depending on how bold you are in your choice of research, it can can take years in itself. Aldo when I say paper, I really mean a book. some thesis can be in the 100s of pages
@keepXonXrockin9 жыл бұрын
King George That's interesting. I Germany, I guess all Masters degrees are taught, but you won't get around doing your own research. I have to take exams and also write research papers, just like I had to for my BA. Lectures usually end with a written exam, while seminars usually require you two write 15 - 20 pages. My final BA thesis only had to be 30 pages/75.000 letters, my MA thesis is required to be 80 pages long.

US universities are much more easy than UK unis. I had a Geography teacher for A level and he told us a story how he went for a year to study in the US for his degree and he was allowed to give lectures because the level of geography that he had learnt at age 17/18 for A levels was higher than the level for the US degree. Apparently the US students were doing multiple choice questions as well and the teachers were amazed that he could write essays.

Idk what university he went to, but that is far from the norm. As a 1st year college student I have already had to write multiple essays and the only time a course uses multiple choice is when it is a lecture with 600+ students, even then there is often an essay portion of the test.

Tuition fees at all British universities used to be paid (since WWII) by the students' local authorities as long as they qualified for a grant (for housing and expenses): which depended on their parents' income the previous year. Fees were abolished in 1976, but reintroduced in 1998 at £1000/yr by Tony Blair, supposedly a Labour prime minister, for England and Wales. The Scottish government introduced them for English students, since Scots have to pay if they study in England. Grants were replaced by student loans. The amount universities are allowed to charge has gone up: all of them ask for the maximum permitted. Overseas students pay very much more. Many courses are only commercially viable if there are enough overseas students.

WAIT WAIT WAIT - the book situation isn't the same for all UK universities. It is in fact a new thing now (starting this year) in some universities to have your core books for free but for many it isn't. Although, our books are rarely that expensive (referring to the physics book).
@emeraldibis75109 жыл бұрын
+llinossmiles The difference is, in the UK the lecturer will never say "turn to page 241 in your textbook". They're expected to provide all of the information in their lectures and write assignment questions themselves. So its often useful to own textbooks to help you, but you don't *need* to have them really. And usually the university library will have copies of all the main books so you can just borrow them if you want them to help with an assignment or something. From what Evan said, I get the impression that in the US you literally need the textbook because the lecturer will refer to it directly and if you don't have it you won't know whats going on.
@llinossmiles9 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah I mean I get that, I was just pointing out that not all UK universities are the same
@kpredd139 жыл бұрын
+Emerald Ibis Nah, half the time you never even need the book on they syllabus they tell you to get the first two weeks of class in the US. Unless you are in a class where you have to bring to book to class and that part of your grade, you can just borrow them for free from the library. I only purchased and rented a handful of books my entire undergrad life. I used the library and its scanner/photocopier.
@marija9 жыл бұрын
+Emerald Ibis well it depends on your course and uni still. Eg, I'm doing English lit at a small uni that has a tiny library. We did HAVE to buy £100 worth of textbooks in first year, that we read in class, or we had to have read for the next week because discussions. And yes you can borrow from the library, but with over 300 students doing eng lit, with about 10 copies in the library there's not much you can do but buy them. In addition, we always have 'set texts' that we have to read that aren't at all provided and aren't available in the library. In my 3 modules this semester I've had to buy 10 books on Amazon amounting to about £120 doing it the cheapest way. Without the books I wouldn't be able to do any of the assignments or go to any lectures because you are expected to discuss the texts in length during the lecture/seminar.

For example, an american student can do well in high school and even take advanced courses called AP courses (along with the AP exams) that are suppose to actually clear the student from having to take the course at university, only to find out that the number of universities that actually allow these AP courses are quite small. There are so many ways that american universities force students to take extra courses it is ridiculous. It is always about them making more money.

@Emma-vn8xf9 жыл бұрын
+OhItsJustKim It was £3300 until 2012 or so wasn't it? I absolutely hate the government for the amount we have to pay in England. I sort of want devolved powers in England too so they only control things that are essential for the whole country but we'd still end up with Tories in charge so it wouldn't help much.
@Luna-dm2dc9 жыл бұрын
+OhItsJustKim In the US we can get loans, grants, and/or scholarships. Evan said his community college was free because of scholarships, without those it would have cost him at least $2000 a semester. My first year of community college I had to pay some out of pocket, but grants covered most of it. My second year was free because I got a tuition waiver because my mom got a job at my school, so I only had to pay for books which was covered by my grant. Paying for it is possible, but it can be kinda difficult.

Regarding US college costs: I was going to go to Berklee College of Music as a music therapy major, and the tuition there is $65k a year and rising. Due to medical setbacks, though, I've had to stay home and take online courses through a local community college working towards a 'communication studies' major, and I think my first semester's tuition was maybe $3k-$5k? Bearing in mind that Berklee is one of the best music schools in the country (Think Julliard level greatness or better) and does 4-year bachelor's degrees AND graduate school, and my community college only does 2-year associate's degree programs and I'm taking my classes online to cut down costs further, that's still quite the price difference.

At my university in the UK we have a 24/7 library in term time, pretty much every single book we need is there and so we don't need to buy books. Most research papers are free. There are different types of accommodation, most being flats with 20 people in them over three floors. If we decide to do a second degree we do have to pay for that one. I'm also doing dual honours, so kind of like two degrees as I'm doing two subjects. Hence I'm doing two dissertations, of 5000-10,000 words each!

Joe M If we don't include private universities there's a lot. Public education is free, our loans go to housing, food, books and other things we need, thus making our debt remarkably less then yours. Very few people live in dorms, there are more shared flats or tiny student homes. We have no sororities but the student union organise loads of different stuff. This is poorly explained, but if there's anything else, please ask :)

A plus side for me going to a community college was that the instructors were generally good about making the books/materials affordable. The campus library also carried at least one copy of the textbooks being used that you could check out for two hour blocks of time (you couldn't remove them from the library though). I always appreciated these efforts to make things affordable for the students. Affordability is why one would choose a community college in the first place after all.

Traditional grammar used to be taught, but the teaching profession had a change of heart in the 1970's and all of that was junked, at least in state schools. Private schools carried on because the parents wanted it.

His comments about uni in America is very New Jersey and his school specific. For each state regulations and payments for public colleges will be different and within the circle of public colleges within that state, payments and regulations will be different. Nothing is completely standardized anywhere. And schools in different regions of the country will be very different from other regions. It will also highly depend on the major/course you've decided to do. I never had to pay for a $300 book in my whole college career and I wouldn't ever say that the books I had to get for my courses in total ever amounted to $300 per semester. It also helps to know where to get your books from. There are many online websites that look for the cheapest options across all the major academic book websites. My tuition a year was about $7k - 8k unless I had to pay for rooming on campus and I didn't go to a bad college at all. Schools in the Northeast are notoriously more expensive than most of the country, especially with most of the Ivys being up there. So a lot of people go down south for college because even with out of state tuition it's less expensive and a better education than schools up north (at least on the east coast). I find throughout this UK vs US series it's all been only his experience (which is of course what he has to draw from), but you have to take that into account cause the US is huge and for the most part each state is going to be very different for a lot of things and depending on your own financial situation, you're going to view the colleges in very different ways. And that's not even getting into private schools that make their own rules entirely.
@alexwright49305 жыл бұрын

Societies in UK universities are the best thing ever. At York St John University, there is a queuing society in which students go into york and form random queues in the hopes of tourists joining, then leave leaving the random people very confused (This is funded by the university by the way).

In Sweden university is free. We even get a contribution monthly (in addition to our student loans) which we don't have to pay back. So you can say we got payed for going to the university. We even get this contribution when we are in the Swedish version of high school. People are probably going to say that nothing is free and that we pay for this with taxes, but this is WAY BETTER than the American model were you can't go if you don't have enough money. Also it's still way cheaper for the average person.

This is so interesting. I am a university student in Sweden (which is also where I am from) and I know that we in many ways are super lucky, but I guess I needed a reminder. - We don't pay anything to apply - We generally don't have to write an application but apply on our acaemic scores only (depends a bit on what you're applying for though) - Tuition is free - Books are not free and can sometimes be super expensive, but at least at my school (medical school) a second hand book is almost always fine - All students can apply for financial aid, and a small part of it is just state funded so our loans won't be as big Of course we have our problems aswell, but geez, I am so happy to live here :P

Good points in the video. I find everyone's experiences are different, but it's not to far off! But some points below if you want more info! (I'm from UK) Few differences between UK and USA based on what I know: UK - 3 years for BA as oppose to 4 years in USA (unless you a do a year's work in your chosen field inbetween 2 of the years) The UK - we don't share rooms usually! I've never met anyone who's had to share a room at uni, only sharing the kitchen/bathrooms.etc We also don't always stay in dorm style accommodation. Most people do it in their first year, then rent a house with their friends for the last 2 years, where all the responsibilities of bills (as said in the video) were passed to you. It was a proper 'live in the real world' situation. It prepares you for money management and how bills work! Books - we don't have to buy them, we were told to buy one book which was about £20, because the library didn't have many copies of it. I think the most books anyone ever bought in my course was 3 or 4 all around about the £20-£30 mark. drinking - it's a big part of UK uni life! I remember my cheap drinks at the student bar, going to lecturers hungover... No one caring how drunk you got! Tuition and Student Loan (England)- in 2005 when I went uni it cost most people £1250 a year, but if you were from a low income it was free (it was for me - I even got a small grant!). The year after it went to £3000 - lots of people complained, then the tories came into power and raised it to a maximum of £9000 a few years later. So £9000 may seem cheap compared to USA, but it was ridiculous compared to what it was. BUT you can get a tuition fee loan you don't have to pay back till you earn 30k (I believe), then after 30 years it expires if you haven't paid it all back - which most people won't (flawed system there! It used to be retirement age - still is for the older loans like mine!). ALSO you can get a student loan to help with living costs - same rules apply. So parents don't have to save for college from the day their kids are born! Different exams prior to uni - at 16 you do GCSEs - which are a selected subjects, most people do 11 GCSE's, some more, some less. A Levels people do 3-4 subjects or some even do BTECs in 1 subject (vocational subjects), which are equivilant to 3 A Levels in points terms. Uni you can either do 1 main subject or 1 main and a minor (depending on the course). My friend did Media TV and Advertising for example. I think most UK people would hate to study lots of subjects in uni! Watching this video made me glad to be British and not American, America seems to just want to make money anywhere it can, whether that's education or health services ("oh you've had a heart attack, well you may have another one when you see the bill"). I just hope Britain doesn't go the same way - this is why I never trust the Tories (and some labour MPs) they seem to want to base their goverment model on America - which despite what they say isn't the greatest country on earth, they government has just convinced a lot of their people that it is!

In England you can now do liberal arts in a few universities and I would 100% recommend it if you weren't entirely sure what subject you wanted to study, feel like it's the best of both worlds , price of english education (still ridiculous but whatever), with the broadness of American studies

In the UK tuition fees have gone up to £9,250 a year (Scotland its free for Scottish students) but you only pay that off when you're earning over £25,000 and whatever you earn over that, 9% gets taken automatically every year. If you don't pay your student loans off after 30 years it gets wiped off your record.

+Mary - as a lame birthday present, as you are a member of the phandom, you now have an excuse to re-watch dan and Phil's 2014 baking vids. Bc Evan is wearing Phil's ghost shirt!!!

In France it's almost free : you pay 184 euros when you start university and then that's it. And if you have a scholarship than you don't pay anything. We're lucky

I never had to buy textbooks so maybe this is a stupid question, but why not buy one textbook and have everyone contribute the money towards it and take photos of the pages? Or use a photocopier? So then depending on how many people are in that lecture you could be paying like 1/100th of the price.

3:43 we have the same problems in Ireland with all books, for primary school and secondary school. You can usually get away with buying second hand books though, because it’s very popular. And usually teachers are sympathetic so if you had different problems or something, the teacher might photocopy the right questions or you just take a photo with your phone.
