Roger Tilling deserves a medal for pronouncing 'Akarapongpisakdi', especially under pressure in the final rounds!
@jeptioak5 ай бұрын
It's not really not that hard to pronounce, you just gotta make sure you've got every syllable. Not the easiest name out of all of these, though, you'd be right in saying that.

Thanks again, CosmicPumpkin! A very competitive match, once the losing team stopped shooting itself in the foot. I was rooting for the losers to get a high enough score to come back, but the winners dominated the buzzer late. My best to both teams, and to each individual.

A little bit of late surge from Wolfson Cambridge but I really wanted them to finish as one of the highest scoring losers. But the fist bumps between Pan and the Captain was adorable and the highlight of this match for me. Also the winning team has an amazing Captain who can narrow down the correct answer and goes with his gut feelings. He can analyze all the answers given to him very well.

Thanks CosmicPumpkin, always enjoy these episodes from you. I have to wonder why Amol barks "Come on" in the music questions, before the music has finished playing. It's *always* been the rule that the answer is expected at the end of the piece at the latest.... Other than that, I was rooting for Wolfson, who made a great comeback after a poor start.

It was specified at the start that Southampton are the 4th placed loser. Do we know what breaks their tie with Open?
@lindorsibande Жыл бұрын
@@thadrin I do not know. I thought it had something to do with having obtained your score with the fewest number of questions, doesn't seem so - I just checked and Southampton got through a total of 35 questions and 36 for Open (starters and bonuses combined). Unless I missed something in my stats. Maybe someone who does know can help us in this regard.

I think that was pity for Wolfson-Cambridge to raise three successive penalties at the beginning part(−5p × 3 = −15p). Without it they could've been placed in one of the four hight-scoring losing teams and possively even enter the 2nd and QF, because they seemed so powerful that they could recover from such a disappointing situation as a deeply negative score. So, I really want to say ''bad luck'' to them. I hear that college must be strong in quiz activies.
@PS-vm3we Жыл бұрын
Almost every week there seems to be a comment about penalties. I find any speculations futile. Penalties come as a result of a mode of play which very often wins the teams points too. Had the players been slower on the buzzers by default, it is likely the starters would have been taken by another team. You win some, you lose some, but if you don't play you are certainly not going to win.

The Wolfson team reached the semifinal of the Cambridge Inter-Collegiate Quiz and defeated some very good teams, so they are definitely a strong team.

it's alright, feel like the british press hyped it quite a bit, which is perfectly understandable particularly if you have in mind that it's an unusual genre for british films

I’d be curious to know how strongly ‘going negative at the beginning’ predicts the outcome of the match. Anecdotally, I feel like any time a team starts off going negative, they usually don’t end up winning. Of course it’s possible, and has happened before, but it seems to cost them so much momentum that most of them don’t recover. I’d be interested to put a number on that though, maybe one of you match stats nerds can analyse the last few series to find what percentage of negative scoring openings correlates to a victory for the opposite team.

Many thanks for your services; that all seemed to kick off after starting rather slowly - I make that 185 points notched up by both teams in the final 8-8.5mins 😮. That's also the fourth 400+ joint score this series - I think Rajan has hit his stride since the UEA/Strathclyde game as we've had many more answered Qs in comparison to earlier heats. This means Oxford Brookes will definitely be back in the HSL round; we'll have to see if Trinity/Open/Southampton will join them, or if there's another twist in the tail 😮? Bring on early November - this second round should be one for the ages - not necessarily for the participant teams though 😅!

Congratulations to Oxford Brookes for clinching the first second-chance playoff berth. Trinity can clinch next week if the Bangor/Edinburgh loser scores 170 or less. Amol mentioned that Southampton will be the next team out of the second-chance standings. What is the tiebreaker that places Open ahead of Southampton?

It seemed to me that Wolfson got their points on much easier questions, which of course is a matter of opinion. That gems bonus section was hard to watch, they probably should have just passed to save time. On the other hand Akarapongpisakdi was impressive and I liked their team work. They seemed strong to me.
