Edinburgh was really impressive -- the way they worked together, the various strengths that the captain knew to refer to, their willingness to pass as soon as they knew they did not have it. Really the best teamwork I have seen. Plus mind-boggling knowledge of geography, art, and quite a few other things.

Thanks very much, Pumpkin. What a phenomenal match, the highest overall score by a mile. Really gutted for the losing team - so close to making it to the repechage. Amol has really given the show a boost. I love his mid-match encouragement to the team lagging behind and the comments at the end to cool things off. It is lovely to get a bit of the studio atmosphere through to our screens. And his tempo simply allows for more questions to be asked and more for us viewers to enjoy.

Their captain was quite impressive. However, not to take the wind out of their sails, they seemed blessed with some very easy starters in at least the first half of the match. Heck, you could've gotten more than half the points on the Art ID Q's by just listing Ninja Turtles.

Those success rates are quite impressive - for both teams. I remember last year when people were ravishing about teams (or, a particular one) that at times only had a bonus conversation rate below 40. And now this. Really sad to see Bangor go, but what a phenomenal team they were up against.

Good teamwork on both sides, the teams had their go-to big hitters, but the others contributed a lot. This season has been very good, the longer distance (thanks to Amol's tempo) brings out the best in all players, gives everyone a chance to shine.

I realize that the highest scoring loser qualification system is not just for fairness, it also makes excellent TV. With it, there never is any garbage time in Round 1 because you're watching if the trailing team can reach the minimum target score.

Thanks again, CosmicPumpkin! Another runaway result, featuring a very strong team against a plucky opponent who I was actively rooting for at the end. I was hoping they could get a high enough score to come back. The questions did not favor the losing team's skill set. As Rajan noted, there were two biologists on the team, and they didn't get to use their specialty IIRC. That said, my best to both teams, and to each individual.

That was phenomenal 😲from the winners; I think the last 450+ aggregate score was Trinity/Manchester 10 years back. Feel bad for the losers 😔 as they missed out on the HSL by the skin of their teeth, and were potentially staring at the biggest defeat this series so far until they pulled themselves back. This does mean that Trinity deservedly get their second chance, and Edinburgh's winning total I think is just outside the top 30 highest-ever scores achieved in the Paxo/Rajan era - the second round is really shaping up nicely 😃.

TBF, if you look at Paxman in the 90's, 2000's and early 2010's, he could be exceptionally fast as well. Mind you I do agree that in the latter stages of his tenure conferring took much longer and led to a sharp drop in the quality of games - I think his Parkinson's also noticeably slowed him down.

Thanks for posting. I thought this was a good show despite the result being determined early on - with Bangor remaining motivated for the 160+ total. Any concerns that whoever replaced Paxo have been obliterated by Amol, comfortably resonating his mark on the programme. The show is in safe hands.

Why are there English and Scottish and Welsh teams at the rugby world cup and not a British team? (And conversely why is there an Australian team but not a Queensland or NSW team?) Oh no, you’re definitely different nations.

Presume I'm not the only one to notice that that famous alumni now mentioned are always non-native (when possible), or at least of immigrant stock and, of course, women, almost all of whom are mentioned not because they are famous but because it's Politically Correct to do so. In this case, David Hume was not only librarian but also an alumnus of Edinburgh University, along with Robert Louis Stevenson, Walter Scott, Alexander Graham Bell, and Charles Darwin, and other presently unmentionable white men.

I'm not British, nor have I ever lived there, but I always used to enjoy the elegant sound of British media. I realise that Received Pronunciation no longer exists, phased out as elitist, politically incorrect, and that there's a great variety of accents. Unfortunately, some quite literally grate on my ears, to the point that I tune out the speaker, in this case, the new host. He has a nice manner, but I no longer watch this series. My comment is at once a sort of apology and a cry of exasperation. The contemporary world seems to believe that form doesn't matter, or that all forms are equivalent, or on the other hand, that certain forms are even to be avoided because people don't want to sound what is referred to as "posh". My argument has nothing to do with politics -- here in Germany, I vote on the Left/Green side. My point is, quite simply, that my ears aren't interested in socio-economics, and I can't listen without feeling what I'm hearing. Spoken language is like music. You either like it or you don't.
@castelodeossos3947
@castelodeossos3947 Жыл бұрын
Agree entirely. A bit like listening to the German spoken in Goethe's Faust versus that spoken in Fassbinder's Berlin Alexanderplatz. In all the countries I visited, I've come across natives speaking their language euphonically and not so. The exception is, perhaps, Afrikaans.
@robertalenrichter
@robertalenrichter Жыл бұрын
@@castelodeossos3947 Coincidentally, I live in Berlin. Not one of the nicer accents, but I agree with you, it depends. The local newscasters sound cool, a blend of regular German and the Berlin colouring. A vast subject, about which I could go on at too great a length. For me, the most gorgeous German accent is upper-class or educated Hamburg, which, sadly also seems to be dying out. I speak English, French and German and have noticed in all of them a sort of generalised "euphonic decline". Contemporary "Parisian" can sound harsh, flat. I don't have anything against regional sounds, per se. Recently watched a KZbin clip in which Richard Burton switched from his acquired accent to the Welsh of his youth. Both were wonderful. I imagine that some sort of work with articulation still goes on at acting schools, and wonder why none of this should be relevant for broadcasters.
@robertalenrichter
@robertalenrichter Жыл бұрын
Further to this -- the German trend has actually gone in the opposite direction, towards a kind of standardised pronunciation in the media, based upon a vaguely Northern German model. I quite like it, clear, precise.

It's not political correctness; it's inclusiveness. For many years, people with regional accents (which are a vast and rich in the UK) were rarely heard on the radio or television. Thankfully, we now accept that it's okay for people to speak in their natural voice rather than in some elitist, forced pronunciation deemed acceptable to the 'ruling classes'. I'm sorry if that upsets you so much but for me personally, it's utterly beautiful. Besides which, this has been the case for many years so I'm not sure how it's only just become an issue for you?
