Hello again! This match started competitively...then the winning team just took off. They got on form, and stayed there. Everyone contributed, and everyone of them have great buzzer speed. There was only once when they were challenged on the buzzer that I remember, and they won that easily. It was readily apparent how much quicker they were at working out the answer and buzzing in. They also did very well converting bonuses. The losing team was just severely out-matched. I suspect that will be the case for many of the winning team's opponents, going forward. they look unstoppable. My best to both teams, and to each individual.

~~~SPOILERS~~~ I was really surprised that Wadham - Oxford got _none_ of the bonus questions in “psychotherapy” 3:24, which would be covered in any introductory psychology course, even though one of the team members is reading experimental psychology (admittedly, a different branch of the field but still). At least, the team managed to not end up with a score of zero, which is, well, something, and remained engaged throughout. Imperial-which is very often a juggernaut-was stellar. Imperial’s Jaime Salamanca Camacho, who was the standout in the team’s earlier match against Manchester, continued to be impressive, although, certainly, his teammates were no slouches. Congratulations to the winning team and heartfelt condolences to the other team.
And the 320-point margin of victory is the joint 3rd highest ever recorded (again in the Paxo/Rajan era - I can do nothing when getting comparisons with the Bambi time of the show, although I think the points scoring system back then was so substantially different that any comparisons with now would be unfair).
Shame for the losers - those 4 penalties definitely arose from taking the right approach, but they just had to face a juggernaut. Ty for posting. You might think Amol slipped them the questions a day earlier... for a nice bottle... Imperial ran away with it, but they got an Achilles heel - music: classic or popular. If they don't (haven't - more correctly) won it all - might be music that did them in. Good team, but what bugs me is UC has turned more bookish in recent years than test fringes and "out of the way" stuff which is the point of a trivia game. Imperial obviously preps hard to be this consistent at UC and this team seems very prepped than be natural "sponges of knowledge". A good quiz should be prep-proof IMHO.
@imokin8613 сағат бұрын
@@edindzeko7876 it's extremely hard to prep-proof a quiz that basically asks direct questions about facts. You still gonna ask what metal is used in incandescent lamps and what colour the flag of X is, or which PM represented a place in Wales, even if you add extra bits in the beginning to make it a true contest of who gets the answer first, and not just a buzz-fest. They have questions that use indirect clues, but going fully that way would mean changing the format too much. Quizzes which hide the clues are very interesting, but it's a different game.
@edindzeko787613 сағат бұрын
@@imokin86 That's the thing. UC question setters should do a bit more work. Not ask direct questions all the way. Not plain lift things from wikipedia. Then, it becomes prep-proof. Last week there was this question about all Shakespeare characters listed in alphabetical order. Likely came off a wikipedia spreadsheet page with a nice sort button. But, if you take any scholarly/critical editions of Shakespeare, is this how they cover it? You can ask so many interesting questions just about Shakespeare's sources. Just a little bit of indirection and prep-heavy teams will not have an advantage. Natural ability will prevail.
Anyone here prefer Paxster to Bamber? I don't know...how many ever of the old Bamber episodes I watch, there is always this improvised feel to them. Paxster was always more collected, even funny at times. Bamber is supposed to be scholarly and more authentic and all that. But, ultimately the questions come from someone else. Amol is adequate. Quite bland I think. Just gets it done.
@@castelodeossos3947 Actually, though I like Paxman's jabs and such, I think even he too was a politically correct i.e., biz-expediency choice. The only authentic quizmaster is always going to be someone who sets their own questions. Even Bamber wasn't that. On MM, Magnus was a legend, but, it was Bosewell Taylor who delivered the payload in that avatar of the show. I think the right approach - given UC has decades of history by now - is to bring someone who has a history with the show. Like Ken Jennings started conducting Jeopardy. May be they thought Amol a news editorial kind of guy was well-read enough. He actually doesn't seem out of place with the science questions and such, which you could see Paxster was. It'd be nice to see Imperial do a number on that sick lady's Open team... if that's who they drew next round. Hoping for it. UC could quite easily - by which I mean uncontroversially - fix this mature student thing. Just stipulate that team members must not exceed 3 or 4 years of full-time post-secondary collegiate education. If they are part-time like many Open students are, count the number of credits or courses or other such. They do that in the US in some contexts where there is more scope for transfer across institutions. This way you don't have someone with an MD working on a PhD or another working on a second PhD or post-doctoral degree running up against college freshmen. It would also eliminate people like Gail Tremble. UC is quite bookish. Particularly now. But, in the middle of your PhD studies is when you have the greatest breadth of topical knowledge. Even if you go on to an academic or research career later, you cultivate more depth, usually at the cost of breadth. So that college time is when you are most potent. And have an immense advantage over people just 1-2 years into their college program. I actually thought a good number of questions fell in a certain sweet-spot for Gail Tremble (or others who have been mini-phenomena on UC), and seen struggling with anything just out of it. UC showrunners might try to level things out more. Just my 2c.
@gooscarguitarСағат бұрын
Nobody does a second PhD. Anyway, PhD students don't necessarily do better on this programme. Imperial's top scorer in the last series was an undergraduate, same with the team before them and the team before them too (which consisted only of undergraduates and still made it to the semis!). The winning Warwick team in 2021 had two PhD students but they are unusual in that respect.
@edindzeko787648 минут бұрын
@@gooscarguitar People do do one. I know quite a few who have done an extra degree in the same field, not even another field. In countries like Germany, a habilitation was mandatory to get a professorship. Such people have been on UC in the past. When Imperial first won, there was an MD who was doing his PhD and was the team captain at 35-36. He is now in his mid 60s and a noted researcher. The average PhD student might not necessarily do well. But, I am not talking about them. I am only talking about regular quizzers. Any winning team will have avid quizzers who have been competing for years anyway. That's the kind of quizzer PhD student I am talking about. I know my breadth of knowledge was greater when I was at that stage. That is why I was never impressed by the Gail Trembles and such. The worst example was the retired lawyer whom Paxster was railing about some years ago. He signed up with Open just to get on UC and was "open" about it, if you will pardon the pun. It's like he wanted to race Usain Bolt when young, and so, when he got the chance, he showed up with a jetpack strapped to his back! Jeez! If they had a clear "max of 2-4 years of post-secondary education only" rule, he would have been disallowed. His law degree and legal apprenticeship would be more than that. UC is meant for university students in their initial college years. For this retired lawyer, there are lots of open quizzes out there - MM, BoB...
