University degrees are a necessity but not a golden ticket to a job.

This popped up in my feed but I disagree with the global job market thing. The world isn’t that competitive. Companies are not going out their way to spend money to hire talent abroad because it costs money. The competitor to be the bare minimum is high but to achieve top tier success then the competition isn’t high at all.

Being average simply wont work anymore. Be average and you will earn and live average as well.

KZbin just recommended me =P Ok, I Agree that a degree is not enough and learning does not stop there, but I disagree with your reasons. But it follows some comments I noted. 1-Stating that the university system is outdated comparably to a technology development does not make much sense to me. Institutions take time to evolve while technology has a different pace. It is like you are comparing bananas with oranges here. 2-Yes, the market is global and competition is more intense. However, this very fact implies that there are more jobs accessible to everyone. 3- "Hours longer and payment smaller". We have seen the opposite in the past decades, we have been working less and producing more in general. I am not sure you can make this case here. I think this would happen in general if the economy goes bad eventually, but then this has nothing to do with having a degree or not, it is just that there will be fewer jobs available. 4- What I do agree with is that in many cases the university environment does not encourage much "out of the box thinking" in the sense you mentioned, although they usually claim to do it. After taking the degree, what differentiates you are the side projects you have worked on and your professional experiences along the way. The degree is like some food that seems nice but is tasteless because it lacks proper seasoning. 5-"Risk averse to pursuing own business". I do not get why you assume it is bad. For me, this is very natural regardless of the university degree, or do you think every single person has to create a new business? On the other hand, people who are inclined to pursue their business probably have much better chances if they have a university degree, because there they meet people and mentors. Also, be aware that a few succeed. That is why it is hard to make money. 6-middle class crisis. I don't know, this seems again more like an economic line of argument which i) is extremely complex to assess, and ii) is not totally related to having the degree because in this case, the degree could still be better than not having one. My overall view is: - a university degree is definitely not enough, you should also work on side projects on the way and be updated beyond the university, especially in tech. - if you have this entrepreneurship spirit and you know it, I believe the university could either boost or drag you back. If you are in some advanced stage where you have some idea how to make it (which seems to be your case), and especially if you have already been in contact with successful people to guide your in your family or with friends, possibly it is more efficient if you just try our stuff out without the uni. - trying a new business and taking risks is not for everyone. Some people just want to chill and that is fine. - i personally do not think that the economy will be that unstable so that it will be better NOT to have the degree.

Hey Robert Thanks for taking the time to write the comment. I also read it. 👍 Honestly im reciting my experience as an engineer with a master degree and 2 years of work experience, your experience might be from somewhere else hence why we may not see eye to eye. I don't regret perusing education but if i could go back in time i would've done a few things differently. Thanks again and have a good day

@@shamelH No problem. Thanks for the nice reply also. But you have to consider the following: could you actually have taken a different path in the past with the knowledge you had at the time? If you are thinking that with the knowledge you have now, it is kind of cheating =D. I think we agree with the most important idea: do not take the degree as a guarantee to get jobs, it is not how it works nowadays, especially in tech.

What do you suggest that I do for my IT degree while in school to ensure that I'm not solely relying on my degree

Hey thanks for the comment. I would say keep perusing your degree but try to learn another skill that would allow you a plan b. Maybe learn sales or anything that makes your more unique 👍
