This is so helpful and true!! I’m a second year student at uni of Leeds and agree with everything you’ve said. It’s so important to make an effort and meet new people and to not get too ‘comfortable’ in your flat in the first few weeks bc it might stop you from trying to meet new people! And societies are such a great way of making friends!! I do dance (which I’d never done before so no pressure) and it’s SUCH a good way to have a group of people separate from your course/halls. I did a video in September about freshers week advice and also have lots of vlogs and videos about it if anyone’s thinking of going!! xx

Although I lived there for only one and a half years I feel attached to it more than any other city. Everything you mentioned reminds me of my days spent in Leeds especially the easy access to both pubs&clubs and nature. Definitely gonna keep working on getting back there.

Currently a home PhD student at Leeds, almost going into my 3rd year (my 2nd year was in lockdown..so not much experience). However, Leeds uni is amazing. The library's, Brotherton, Laidlaw and Edward Boyle are incredible. You have many areas to study, whether in groups or by yourself. Everything is within walking distance! You have bookstores, cafes right across the university not to mention tons of food places! It really is a diverse, student city. The mall is 10 mins walk, you have a cinema there too. Stores usually close at 8pm which is fantastic. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask:)

Current year 2 comp sci student here, most of this is spot on. Advice that I resonate with the most is join a society that you're interested in, and take responsibility for your social life (i.e. invite people round to hang/go out and whatever). I'd also add, try something new that has nothing to do with your degree, this is one of the most accessible places to do it. Lastly, you don't have to venture out to Yorkshire to get some green. Meanwood and Roundhay are a decent walk or short bus away and make for amazing walks. Feel free to ask anything.
@eringreen9524 жыл бұрын
Toby Hendricks which accommodation would you recommend?? Finding it difficult to decide and would love to hear more opinions
@siddharthshivakumar91764 жыл бұрын
I have an offer from Leeds for comp sci. What do you think of the course so far?
@tobyhendricks99514 жыл бұрын
@@eringreen952 Hey. I've had experience with a variety of accommodations and in my honest opinion they're all pretty similar, some have their quirks. I lived in Liberty Dock, it's far from uni and all other accommodations but it's close to the shopping area. Oxley and Devonshire are a bit quieter sometimes feeling more like boarding school than uni accommodation (not a bad thing, actually feels really homely). The rest just sorta blur together with what you get being indicated by the price. Places like Lupton and Henry price are your stereotypical student accommodations, City side's a little more fancy with most other accommodations landing somewhere in-between. There's always a wide range of people at accommodations so I wouldn't worry too much about social life. Check the location before you apply, make sure you're comfortable with the walk, everything else is whatever you make of it.
@tobyhendricks99514 жыл бұрын
@@siddharthshivakumar9176 In short - The course is good. In long - Your experience depends on who you are, almost everything is nicely balanced. You'll do a mix of theoretical, maths and programming modules. The content is demanding but not impossible. Contact (teaching) hours are generous but not too sparse. Coursework to exam ratios are usually okay. The only issue is that the course assumes you know basically nothing, that doesn't mean it goes easy on you. You also have 2 module slots to allocate to anything you please, use them wisely. If you're competent at programming, you'll probably find programming modules easy for the first (and maybe second) year. Same if you're competent at maths, but if you're short in one of these areas you'll probably need to spend time catching up if you wanna do well. If you're already a good programmer don't take the optional programming modules unless you want an easy ride, instead take a school of maths module or even something completely different. The opposite is also true. If you're competent at both then you'll probably be spinning your wheels for the majority of first year and a bit of the second. Thankfully Leeds is a pretty good place to be bored. Computing society will host a variety of events. And there'll be a plethora of other societies you can join too (+ Leeds is just a great city). Overall the course is good, challenging and allows you to specialise in areas you're interested in. It's the 6th best compsci course in the UK apparently, but most Russell group unis appear to be on par with eachother anyways. Honestly I think it's Leeds itself that puts this place above other unis such as Warwick, Durham or Newcastle. But in the end, pick the place you wouldn't mind spending 3-4 years, the rest is basically up to you.
@eringreen9524 жыл бұрын
Toby Hendricks ahh thankyou so much! Sorry I’ve only just seen this but I ended up applying for Leodis. It’s reassuring to know most of the accommodations offer the a similar thing if I don’t end up getting into leodis though! Thankyou x

Hi! I would just like to say how inspiring your video is to me! I just got an offer to Leeds last week n I was actl so nervous n excited at the same time as in one angle I would love to experience my uni life in the uk but in another it’s a big challenge for me to leave my hometown. I think it’s basic instinct, that the first moment I got my offer I started scrolling through chinese social media apps to find potential schoolmates and course mates, n I started looking for outside accommodations. Then I noticed, I m gg to the UK, n the main goal of living in another country will be to know about local culture n experience what the locals go through! I started scrolling through youtube (don’t worry I m in somewhere where youtube is allowed) n watching videos on how the locals view the school, tips on the different school accommodations n how to make friends. It sparked light in me regarding the point on opening oneself up n meeting more people. This is something that I hv been telling my friends a lot but I myself forgot about it! Yes, there’s rlly no point in me looking for people who r similar to me or juz stay within that small safety bubble, it might be hard to meet new people at first but I will definitely meet someone if I open myself up and try! After having this thought, I totally ditched the idea of looking for an outside accommodation, I m gonna apply for the school accommodation n try my best to meet as many people as possible in sch n maximise my experience at Leeds. Thank you so much for this video n I m looking forward to meeting new friends in sch!☺️

Rosie Parry I lived in Cityside as an exchange student. It’s definitely expensive but having an en-suite bathroom changed my life. It’s really close to wilko and Morrison’s so shopping is really easy. It’s also great for nightlife with walkabout, popworld, and prysm like a five minute walk away and other clubs not much further away. Hi I’m not staying in accom for my first year but taking an external flat because I found one for cheap will that really affect me making friends and all? Xx

Guys when is a good time to apply for accommodation because I didn’t even know you can apply now and it’s January

I haven't yet but app it says they don't go on first come first served basis so don't think its bad to wait longer! App you have to firm your choice first and then it comes up - or check the prospectus x
@georgeb93883 жыл бұрын
yeah once you've firmed it you should be able to book it but it's not first come first serve at Leeds since people hear back from their offers at different times

I'm waiting for my grades to get into leeds. Need 3 As but I knew from the moment I was on campus I wanted to go there. The only thing is accommodation is so expensive in leeds especially compared to sheffield.

My bf went to Leeds and it was always so fun visiting him, the campus facilities were amazing compared to my uni, SO MANY LIBRARIES in Leeds compared to my uni which only had one, and the city is fab!! My only complaint is how hilly it is 😂
@lydiavioleta_4 жыл бұрын
hahaha that's true but I think Notts is quite hilly too so I'm used to it! x

There are 27,000 universities in the world. This year Leeds University is ranked at 86 the QS international tables which brings it within the top one third of one percent of world universities.. It is of course a Russell group university. The top 100 employers in the UK (ie The High Flyers' report which is viewable online) ) publish an annual ranking of the 20 universities whose graduates they favour most. In the real world this counts for quite a lot more than the often baffling and sometimes downright bizarre national rankings that appear in publications like the Times and the Guardian (Lancaster and Loughborough universities were consistently placed as top ten universities in the Times national rankings???!!! You have got to be kidding!!!). For 2022 the High Flyers' list places Leeds at number 5. Cambridge is ranked at number 7 and Oxford is ranked at number 10. As the biggest centre outside London for banking and legal services Leeds is the wealthiest city in the north of England with upmarket shops, restaurants and cafes. The university has an embracing and safe feeling campus 10 minutes walk from the thriving city centre. On and around the campus there is some lovely architecture and a buzzing social scene. Of the UK's 120 universities Leeds falls consistently within the top three for the number of applicants. With an impressive international standing for the quality of its research and a first rate social scene Leeds will always be a serious choice for a great many academically gifted undergraduates and postgraduates.

The only university that I can go to now is Leeds, otherwise I’d have to study a language year and then chose whatever university I want. Would you recommend me to study civil engineering there? And Thanks for reading my comment🙌

The lack of north-south divide sounds fab haha, as I accepted my offer for Lancaster the other day and I live 20 mins from Bath... bit of a difference in the accents, but I'm excited to go 'up north' to be honest, it's completely different and new :')

It's Just Em I did my Masters in Lancs last year, honestly you’ll love it! Tbf there are a lot of Northerners, but it’s also a super international uni so it felt like there was less emphasis on the UK North/South divide - in my flat there were people from Germany, Hong Kong, and Mongolia, as well as other UK students. The most stereotypically Northern thing is probably how important the Greggs on campus is haha!
@itsjustem82274 жыл бұрын
Jess Lee thank you so much :) and that sounds like an excellent bonding point haha, one thing social distancing needs to teach me is how to refrain from buying a Greggs every time I walk past 😂

Currently stuck between Henry Price and James Baillie Park for accommodation. Social aspect is very important, but does anyone know whether I'd get any sleep at JBP lol?
@jaylakayalah57984 жыл бұрын
I think you can sleep anywhere... however just remember if you stay somewhere with a reputation like that - expect to have drunk people screaming through the night!!
