I found I got on with pretty much everyone at uni ( course, corridor...) which was refreshing after being in a small, gossipy school. I would say hi to anyone I bumped into outside of lectures, could ask anyone on my course about a piece of work we had yo do, but I had a small group of really close friends. Definitely quality over quantity!

Just a question, you don't have to have close friends at university, do you ? As long as you are acquainted enough with a few people in your classes, you won't have any problem with anything that has to do with collaboration and group work, will you ?

I think my advice would be to join societies. I had some lonely weeks (especially reading week when my flat went home) and it is nice knowing that you will see people every week. Personally, I have to know someone for a while to be friends with them so seeing people consistently was very beneficial.

Can confirm that during my Psychology degree, the "abstracts" of journal articles were a god send because they condensend everything you often needed into a concise summary. Highly recommend using them in essays!

I was teetotal for the entirety of my 3 years at Uni (2009-2012) when the student drinking culture was much bigger than it is nowadays. I didn't miss out on anything, I took J2Os to pre-drinks, went out out to bars and night clubs till they shut at 3-4am, and once people know, no one cares or questions it! The only negative is that you tend to get tired quicker when sober but no hangovers during 9am lectures! 🙌🏻💜

Read abstracts in journals before reading/accessing articles otherwise it could be irrelevant and you could waste your time. Read the introduction and contents page before reading a book for the same reason.

I'm starting my first year in September as well, but I'm doing it as a mature student so I luckily haven't had the stress of finding a home or kitting it out, as I'm staying in my own place. I do have experience of my own first place on my own and it was thrust on me very quickly, so I get how overwhelming it is. I've seen boxes which claim to have everything you need for Uni (pots/pans/cutlery etc. They will be great for some people :) I hope you've managed to get things sorted out. Here I am sounding like I have my house in order...I'm absolutely bricking uni as I'm gonna feel like a grandad at 36 years old! And not studied for 20 years 😭 I wish you all the best Ash. I'm sure that you'll rock it, regardless of what course you are studying 😀

@@carysjones8416 Hello, I literally forgot about this, it has been great! I have made many friends actually, as long as you stay open-minded, go out there and, don't overthink it, it will get easier. Most of the things I mentioned as concerns here have turned out not to be. Uni has made me grow out of my shell more and it isn't too bad being independent and missing family, it's a part of the experience. The only issue I'm having at the moment is the course itself which I'm not enjoying (basically the complete opposite of my concern last year LOL) but hey, I figured it out last year so I'm sure I will with this too. Happy new year!
