If you want to explore further I would definitely recommend checking out Kennedy Farrior and watching her video diaries about life on campus! She's one of our close friends and did an awesome job documenting her experience at UM as she studied abroad, worked as a resident assistant, tried out D1 athletics, worked for homecoming, studied abroad, and served on the executive board of the Iota Nu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha in the organization's first year back on UM's campus. @julieandjulia75335 жыл бұрын
Hi, Julie here! Thank you so much we worked really hard to keep our dorm organized. The bed loft costs are $225 for the whole year. For storage there are many great storage options in the area but we personally used Stow Simple which was great because they bring the boxes to your door, take everything when you move out, and have it all back in the dorm before move in. That being said, I just moved back into the sophomore dorms and our couch bed is no where to be found, so we’ll see how that goes for Stow Simple in terms of not losing one of the only pieces of furniture we had.

Dahlia Mason Hi, Julie here! Yes, there are bathrooms in the lobby, and if you make friends in the hall you could always pop into their room and use the bathroom! However I have to say I have never had this problem just because the four of us in our suite all have such wildly different schedules. There are stalls on the first floor though.

Did you feel removed from the freshman social scene, not being in the towers? Thanks for the great video! I think Eaton looks much better than Hecht/Stanford...what do you think?
@julieandjulia75335 жыл бұрын
Hey, Julie here! I never EVER felt removed from the freshman social scene. AT ALL. What’s awesome is that Eaton is all freshmen and it was really one big community. My friends who lived in the towers said that our hall in Eaton was closer than some floors on the tower, so part of how involved where you live feels with the social scene really just depends on who else ends up living there. I‘d say it’s socially even better than the towers because it’s coed. Personally, overall, I think Eaton is better than the towers. The closeness between everybody on the floors and halls is awesome and the Eaton pride is just as strong as Hecht or Stanford pride. The awesome community feeling combined with bigger rooms and no communal bathrooms made Eaton the absolute best place to live for my freshman year and I’m super grateful I ended up there.

Do the toilet doors lock? Shower curtains are so flimsy 😞
@JulieMangooooo3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Julie here! The doors to the bathroom do NOT lock. This definitely scared Julia and I at first because we didn’t know our suitemates. I remember once we even shoved a chair under the door when we changed so nobody would barge in! That ended after a day because everybody knew to knock before entering the bathroom, and typically if someone was inside they’d play music or listen to tiktoks really loudly so everyone knew it was occupied (lol). We prioritized a cute bathroom over privacy which is why our shower curtains are so flimsy, and if that’s a concern there are options that are less see through that give more privacy. The default curtains the dorms come with are completely opaque. When it comes to how much privacy you want, communicating your expectations with those you’re living with is key! Good luck, Julie

@julieandjulia75333 жыл бұрын
Hi, Julie here! As a freshman I don't think you can have a car if you're living on campus. If you are living on campus still your sophomore year when you actually can have a car I would definitely recommend it - it gives you a lot more freedom to explore Miami and frees you up from some pricey uber rides and grubhub orders. I had my car last semester and it made my life 10x better, and Julia's had hers since sophomore year and she's loved it.

r we allowed to keep hot plates? is there a campus cat?
@julieandjulia75334 жыл бұрын
Hi, Julie here! I don’t think you can have hot plates in the dorms since they are an open source of heat which is a fire hazard. as for campus cats, there are a multitude of cats around campus that are all fairly domestic. The Frost School of Music does have one specific cat named Bully that often interacts with students, but there are other loose cats in that area and near the gym as well that are super friendly.

hi! Julie, I'm a student from Amsterdam business school, and we are about to choose the exchange college in the coming years. I'm thinking about picking one from Baruch, Baffllo state college and University of Miami. Since I have no idea about these colleges, (without considering affordability) what would you advise then? Appreciate!
@julieerhardt54964 жыл бұрын
Hi Fionna, Julie here (from my personal account hehe). Out of all of these schools, the University of Miami is the best academically and has one of the best business schools in the country. It is also located in Florida which is sunny and warm year-round, compared to some brutal, cold, and snowy winters up at Buffalo or Baruch in New York. UM is such a great place to be for quick beach trips, days in the city enjoying all of the local cuisines, and a beautiful, diverse campus. If it were my choice, I would definitely choose the University of Miami because I love it here and I couldn't imagine being anywhere else :)

how was lofting the bed, comfort wise? I'm also rooming in Eaton, do u suggest it?
@julieandjulia75335 жыл бұрын
Hey Leyla, Julia here! Lofting the bed definitely allows for more space in the room and helps separate your "living" space from your sleeping space. That being said, personally, my bed was super squeaky all year and it was a pain in the ass getting up and down, especially if I forgot my charger on my desk or something like that. However, Julie's bed wasn't as squeaky as mine, and she actually enjoyed being lofted, so it's definitely a personal preference. You can always try it out for the first few weeks and if you decide you hate it, BedLoft will take it apart for you, even in the middle of the semester! Hope this helped :)

@julieandjulia75336 жыл бұрын
Hi, Julie here! The new housing is currently under construction. It was supposed to be complete by the fall semester of 2019 but construction was delayed due to Hurricane Irma, so it is now scheduled to be done later than that. Us students don't really know when it'll be done, but it definitely isn't done yet and will not be for at least a year, to my understanding.

Hi, Julie here! Campus is big but not huge so it’s pretty easy to get a sense of where everything is quickly. What’s great is during orientation your orientation fellows or RA will give you a tour around campus and help you figure out where all your classes are before they start. It also never hurts to keep a PDF or screenshot of the campus map on your phone because I still definitely use it sometimes to find random buildings.

Hi, Julie here! for the prices of all the dorms you can find them online on housings website. The university of Miami just built a whole new building of apartment style dorms that are more expensive than anything else on campus. Eaton is inexpensive compared to that and has comparative costs to the freshman towers with communal bathrooms.

How bad is hurricane season
@julieandjulia75336 жыл бұрын
Lyric_and_cover _Ni Hi, Julie here! In terms of weather, the school was hit by Irma my senior year of high school, and UM got hit really really hard. That being said, hurricane season isn’t bad every year and this year nothing bad hit Miami. However, there were bad hurricanes on the inner coast of Florida and up further north, they just avoided UM this year. So for me this year, I’d say not bad, but people who went through Irma and had to evacuate campus would probably have a different story to tell unfortunately so I am no expert. I would definitely look up online how Irma affected the school.
@KylaGrace5 жыл бұрын
Honestly its fine. I was in fl during irma. Got off campus kinda last minute. The buildings are built to withstand cat 5s pretty solidly. We were out of school for a few weeks because of debris like trees and trash but thats it. Don't worry about it. You'll always have time to evacuate if needed anyway

@julieandjulia75334 жыл бұрын
Hi, Julie here! UM does offer single dorms, though they are notoriously hard to get in to if there is not a specific/medical reason to be getting them. The new housing that has just been built is apartment style and does have living rooms and kitchens which would be like a mini apartment - though freshmen do not have dorms with kitchens. The closest thing is the Mahoney Pearson buildings that have communal kitchens on some floors. It is also mandatory for freshman living on campus to get a meal plan that involves the dining halls or on campus restaurants.

Hi Deadly Blossom2.0! Julie Here. When Julia and I went about buying all of the furniture pieces for the room we figured it would be an investment! Unforntantuely when COVID-19 hit during our sophomore year we had to evacuate the dorms very quickly and we had to give away a lot of the furniture. However, if the pandemic had not hit, Julia and I lived together up until graduation so we would have just continued to put the items in storage every summer and continued using them during the school year. Many items - like the mini-fridge, microwave, and TV for example - we kept up until move out this May! It lived with us in Eaton Residential College, Mahoney Residential College, (got a little split up our Junior year when I forgot to pay housing), and in the University Village with us our senior year. If we could've, I know we could've put every single furniture item we originally had our freshman year to good use if we weren't forced to leave the dorms so quickly and chaotically. Even the grey pillows and dry-erase board on our front door stayed with us until the end! Looking back at the use we got out of each item and how much it made our dorm feel like home.- it was worth it! If only COVID-19 hadn't happened - right?

How to apply to the Miami university?
@julieandjulia75335 жыл бұрын
Hi, Julie here! If you look at this website: admissions.miami.edu/undergraduate/application-process/admission-requirements/freshman/index.html , you can see the admission requirements and how to apply. If you are applying to a special program/school, like the Forst School of Music for example, it is a slightly different process but I believe no matter what you're going to need to do the common app.
@chics4change6 жыл бұрын
great video!! Do you know specifically how you got to live in Eaton? Did you apply later or what? When I go (speaking it into existence) after I apply, I reallyyyyy want to be in Eaton rather than Stanford or Hecht!
@julieandjulia75336 жыл бұрын
Hi! Julie here. From my understanding Eaton was just "overflow" housing in previous years (where freshmen who apply late for housing get "stuck"), and since this is the first year Eaton is an all-freshmen dorm we don't understand exactly how we ended up here. The theory everyone in Eaton has is that we are in Eaton because we applied late after the housing in Hecht and Stanford filled up. Everyone we have spoken to in Eaton submitted their housing application really close to the due date (apparently we have a lot of procrastinators here), so we think its just that everywhere else filled up first. When you are applying for housing if you want to end up in Eaton I recommend that after submitting your housing application maybe send a separate email to Housing and Residential Life and request you be put in Eaton, which I know for sure one person in the building did - and they ended up where they wanted! When it comes time to apply for housing make sure you at least and try and request what you want because the worst thing that could happen is you end up in some other dorm at UM (which is still in freakin' paradise!). Best of luck!

How do you pick which dorms you’ll be living in?
@julieandjulia75335 жыл бұрын
Hi, Julie here! So freshman year we didn’t get to pick our dorms, we just got randomly placed into Eaton. However, if you call housing before dorms are assigned and make a request you have a better chance of ending up where you want to be. Sophomore year onward (if you choose to live on campus) you use the same housing portal as freshmen but you have the option to pick your dorm and the exact room you want.

Hi Robert! Thank you so much for your concern. As a broadcast journalism major, one might say this was a valuable experience for Julia, but this was over four years ago, so who's to say? Funny enough, with about half of our college experience being impacted by COVID, we each had to give quite a few presentations on camera over Zoom. Making this video turned out to be a great experience that I was able to talk about in job interviews to speak to my creative ability, and it's healthy for college students to have hobbies and outlets for creativity. If you didn't have a college environment where you felt comfortable exploring your interests and time outside of class to focus on your passions rather than homework, I'd suggest looking into UM, you might love it!
