Two years after this video was posted I was starting my 10+ years long path in Russia, in the beginning living in similar conditions throughout different dorms in different cities. Good times even though I hated it in many occasions hehe

You might be in the same room I was in, or at least the same hallway. 7th floor, sector V, where they housed mostly foreign students.

Well, although I was already a PhD during the scientific internship at the Moscow University I was accommodated in a very similar room for three months of my internship. At the beginning I thought it was awful, but at the end I felt very well, especially when spring started. Right now, after almost six years ago I remember this place with emotion, which is certainly associated with the memories of the best foreign trip during the last years of my academic career. I greet all residents of the 6th floor :-) Pavel

There are dorms worse than this in the world but considering that it is like the national brand university of Russia, I suppose the government could actually spend more on it and make slightly less by corruption.

This is great! 1) huge difference between american dorm: you don't actually have 'room mates'. They don't 'share' the same 'room', you have separate doors. They're really 'flatmates. To me that is the difference between yes, and no. 2) look at those doors and floors: enjoy it it while you can. wooden parquet and wooden doors? old school colored glass? these are all rare materials. you won't see these anymore in the rest of the developed world unless you're rich. you have to be rich to have wood nowadays. now they would be replaced with artificial materials and the place would stink with plastic and dusty carpets. to me the place is beautiful old. i'd way rather stay here than in a sterile contemporary modern dorm. this place has character and history! not a small thing. 3) the fact the toilet is seperate is completely logical. this is normal all over europe. while one person is taking a shower another can be in the toilet. why this is not done in anglophone countries is the question. 4) the size of the room is not bad. again, i'd way rather have my own room than share a bigger one, and also pay an arm and a leg for it by the way. in fact i wouldn't share a room, that's not possible.

Is there a reason the (alleged) best university in Russia has dorms like this?

Sometimes it's desirable to let the tap run so the pipes won't freeze.

Yes I'm from the USA. I studied Russian (linguistics). I'm not there anymore. I believe it is a very good math school, I knew a German student who studied math there and he liked it.

This dorm is still better than my 2013 brand new dorm at an elite university in China. LOL. We have 8 guys to one room and we all share one toilet. Such a hassle and so disgusting coming from a private American university dorm and apartment.... lolol
