I absolutely and truly ADORE this song! The middle verse's "the snow must melt, must melt, must go" (and "not thus, not thus, o soul, not thus") always gives me goosebumps!

SAME!!!! That's my favourite part! And also the "thy gifts to fade, thy gifts to fade, thy gifts to fade like snow"

I sung this in the 1950's in Stockport, at the High School or the Maia girls choir. Now 75 and singing it with the Ongleton Choral Soc. So incredible and moving and oh what memories for me!!

I've always loved this song ever since first discovering it in 2002. I was part of the SATB choir (I sang tenor) so I didn't get to hear it until the treble SSA choir performed at the Christmas concert. I made sure I bought the CD and this was one of the songs that I played repeatedly.

Sir Edward Elgar - The Snow, Op. 26 No. 1 O snow, which sinks so light, Brown earth is hid from sight, O soul, be thou as white, As white as snow, as snow, O snow, which falls so slow, Dear earth quite warm below; O heart, O heart, so keep thy glow, Beneath the snow, the snow. O snow in thy soft grave Sad flow'rs, sad flow'rs the winter brave; O heart, so soothe and save, so soothe, as does the snow. The snow must melt, must go, Fast, fast, fast, fast as water flow. Not thus, my soul, O sow Thy gifts to fade like snow, Not thus, not thus, O sow not thus thy gifts to fade like snow. O snow, thou'rt white no more, Thy sparkling too, is o'er; Be as bevore, Was bright the snow. Then as the snow all pure, O heart be, but endure; Through all the years full sure, Not as the snow, not as the snow.

Not sure who's conducting, but it isn't Dr. Napoles. She's page turning at the piano.

This is the "other" Elgar--not "Pomp" but delicate and restrained....
