@tiwaz45984 жыл бұрын
Not really actually. Frisian is the language that is most like English, which has been very latinized. I don't know why, and how, but it's a fact. Dutch and German is more Germanic sounding than Frisian, and have also more in common with Scandinavian languages than Frisian. It remains a fact though, that Magna Frisia was a Viking territory.
@Weda014 жыл бұрын
@@tiwaz4598 I think you mix some things up here, Frisian has never been latinized only English has. Frisian is considered closest to English because both languages are branches from the Anglo-Frisian language. Frisian became the continuation of this Germanic language branch and English became the form that mixed Anglo-Frisian with Latin. And the reason Frisian is different from Dutch and German according to linguistics is because the Frisian language didn't have a so called "middle stage" in the evolution of the language, which means that the Frisian language is closer to the original Germanic language than modern Dutch and German are.

Since I live in the S.W. of England, for 3 years now, I've been fascinated by the relationship between the UK and Friesland. My mother is born in Holwerd and her family at large are all from that Northern coast of Friesland. As a child, I've listened to the Frisian language and when I started reading English books at a young age, I found that there's much similarity between Frisian and English grammar and the way it sounds. Besides, as soon as I chose my holidays in England, particularly the South Downs in Sussex and the South West, Devon and Cornwall, preferably traveling along the coast, I've begun to feel strongly connected to Britain, far more than to The Netherlands, where I was born in 1951, in Maassluis. I'm almost sure that my ancestors' genes woke up during my holidays in Britain and combined with my love for Dartmoor, it's what made me decide to leave my country of birth and live in the UK in sync with my retirement. This beautiful British island's history, the bedrock,the granite and red earth, the landscape features and geological fascinating history, plus the influence of the druids, to me still much present in Devon and Cornwall, resonates more with my soul-colours. I believe there's such a thing as clip and clear certainty where one feels at home, despite the choice of birthplace when we arrive in a physical body on planet Earth.

There’s a plain reason for this. Almost 2000 years ago the Frisians and Saxones went across to Northhumbria (UK) where the roots are for the English language. The Dutch language came from Frisians in combination with Frankian influence, therefore being quite differently and Frisian cannot be understood by the Dutch nowadays.

"The principal Proto-Germanic branch of the Indo-European family tree is R1b-S21. This haplogroup is found at high concentrations in the Netherlands and north-west Germany. It is likely that R1b-S21 lineages expanded in this region through a founder effect during the Unetice period, then penetrated into Scandinavia around 1700 BCE (probably alongside R1a-L664), thus creating a new culture, that of the Nordic Bronze Age (1700-500 BCE). R1b-S21 would then have blended for more than a millennium with preexisting Scandinavian populations, represented by haplogroups I1, I2-L801, R1a-Z284. When the Germanic Iron Age started c. 500 BCE, the Scandinavian population had developed a truly Germanic culture and language, but was divided in many tribes with varying levels of each haplogroup. R1b-S21 became the dominant haplogroup among the West Germanic tribes, but remained in the minority against I1 and R1a in East Germanic and Nordic tribes, including those originating from Sweden such as the Goths, the Vandals and Lombards."

When the christian chronicles were written on several parts of europe they've twisted the events beyond recognition, but still speak often about the same persons and places. In Widsith, the Edda and Beowulf f.e. you can read about an epic Frisian-Danish war and the battle of finnsburg, that might have been completely different, but surely, there is a whole tsunami of events all across the baltic and north sea, that is called pre-christian myths who were each single one written by catholic scribes and have without doubt taken place in some way or another. Today I thought what people in Achterhoek call høken, could be strangely related to the Danish king Hoc/Hoki that the Frisians supposedly dealt with in the above mentioned story and the skandinavian word hyggelig, meaning "cosy" resonates with king hygelac as well...

A Roman documented Frisia 12 BC. Years later the Romans returned to find the Frisii (original people) gone. Some fled to Flanders, some to Kent, England; 400 AD (???). When the Anglo-Saxons wars broke out in England, these Frisian returned to Frisia. Apparently, they have found Frisian artifacts in Western Netherlands that date back to 1750 BC.

I heard a similar story and am still trying to piece it together. What i understand is that there have been two Frisias. The first Frisia was flooded out ( an early bout of 'Climate Change') and it's inhabitants largely dispersed. The second (present) Frisia occurred when the water subsided and the remaining survivors intermingled with Saxons and Jutes (or perhaps Angles..?) with the Frisian language governing/adopted. JMHO. A Frisian living in Canada...

@@Gloopular I did my DNA via ancestryDNA. I have English/Brit, Norwegian & Swedish DNA; small %s. I am wondering if my Brit DNA is actually from my Frisian. I have a lot more % of Northern Euro (German & whatever). 3 grandparents from N. Germany & my Pake from Friesland. 12 BC, the Romans discovered Magna Frisia. Prior to 400 AD when floods came many Frisians migrated to Kent, England & Flanders. BUT these Kent, England Frisians moved back to Friesland during the Anglo-Saxon Wars in England. Frisii are the original Frisian people. "The Frisii (Old Frisian and Old English: Frīs) were an ancient Germanic tribe living in the low-lying region between the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta and the River Ems, and the presumed or possible ancestors of the modern-day ethnic Frisians. The Frisii were among the migrating Germanic tribes that settled along the North Sea in the 4th century BC. They came to control the area from roughly present-day Bremen to Bruges, and conquered many of the smaller offshore islands. In the 1st century BC, the Frisii halted a Roman advance and thus managed to maintain their independence. In the Germanic pre-Migration Period (i.e., before c. 300 AD) the Frisii and the related Chauci, Saxons, and Angles inhabited the Continental European coast from the Zuyder Zee to south Jutland. All of these peoples shared a common material culture, and so cannot be defined archaeologically. On the east they were originally bordered by the Ampsivarii who lived at the mouth of the Ems until AD 58, at which time the Chauci expelled them and gained a border with the Frisii. The Chauci to the east were eventually assimilated by their presumed descendants the Saxons in the 3rd century. Some or all of the Frisii may have joined into the Frankish and Saxon peoples in late Roman times, but they would retain a separate identity in Roman eyes until at least 296, when they were forcibly resettled as laeti (i.e., Roman-era serfs) and thereafter disappear from recorded history. Their tentative existence in the 4th century is confirmed by archaeological discovery of a type of earthenware unique to 4th-century Frisia, called terp Tritzum, showing that an unknown number of Frisii were resettled in Flanders and Kent, likely as laeti under the aforementioned Roman coercion. The lands of the Frisii were largely abandoned by c. 400 due to Migration wars, climatic deterioration and flooding caused by sea level rise. They lay empty for one or two centuries, when changing environmental and political conditions made the region habitable again. At that time, settlers that came to be known as 'Frisians' repopulated the coastal regions. Medieval and later accounts of 'Frisians' refer to these 'new Frisians' rather than to the ancient Frisii." The Frisii were the indigenous people of the Netherlands & countries along the North Sea. When I was in Hamm visiting my mom's cousin, Heinz, I mentioned, on my dad's side, I am Frisian. Heinz told me along the North Sea in Germany are people who speak another language; Frisian. I believe this is East Frisian. North Frisian spoken in Denmark. AND don't forget the 3 groups of Frisian Islands. I read that these Frisian Germans consider themselves Frisian FIRST, German second. My dad's 2nd cousin, Roelof Boltje, dredged/made the Copacabana. Look up R. Boltje en Zonen on youtube. There are about 18 videos of him & his business. There's a plaque at the Copacabana Beach with our name on it. The nerve of the Dutch to FINALLY make the Frisian language an OFFICIAL language in 1955. Mighty white of the Dutch, ya think???!!! Frisian language is much OLDER than the Dutch language...!!!! I found out last year via AncestryDNA that I am 6% Euro Jew. I narrowed it my my dad's side; I think his Frisian dad, my pake. I was told my pake's ancestors actually immigrated into Friesland from Giethoorn around 1750 AD for the peatbogs. These people are/were called Gietersens. BUT I traced BOLTJE in Friesland about 125 years prior to the main immigration of the Gietersens into Friesland. Through research I found that Giethoorn was settled 1230 AD by fugitives from the Mediterranean area. Could they have been Jewish...???? I did find info stating that these fugitives were flagellants...YIKES...!! My surname is BOLTJE not Boltjes. However, I did find info about a man, Tjeerd (??) Boltje, who gave the surname Boltje to some of his kids & the surname Boltjes to other of his kids. Weird. I have been able to trace back to my 5 time great grandfather, Hilbrand Boltje; don't know the year. BUT have traced the surname BOLTJE to about 1625. www.tresoar.nl & www.allefriezen.nl . De Vries/De Fries (The Frieze/Fries) is the #1 Frisian surname. Dijkstra & Hoekstra; 2nd & 3rd most common Frisian surnames. My great Beppe's surname was/is Waterlander.

It should be noted that the Frisii of Roman times were not Frisians. The Frisii were forced into serfdom and spread throughout the Roman empire (effectively becoming extinct), and then several centuries later the modern Frisians split off from the Saxons.

Yes Frisia was the rebuild land of the Frisii - they were refugees in Kent and Flanders etc due to the floods. They made families with Saxons or stayed in their own Frisii communities. Then they returend after the floods were over together with their Saxon families - and other Saxon and Juten settlers who were searching for new beginnings to rebuild the land and they deemed it Frisia.

The only thing I'd dispute here is how closely the Frisians abided by the laws of the Frankish rulers. They've always been independent... even when the danes settled. The system of Terps and small islands allowed them significant communal autonomy from the centralised government. This in turn allowed them to effectively do what they wanted so long as taxes were paid and they weren't raided.

Take this historic "Hard Link" to the past: Frisian coins called sceat from the year 700 seem to have the function of what Swedes call Skatt nowadays Its the same word in old english and saxon, but maybe also in geatish and other. Since countries had not been invented yet, skeat is not far away from sceaf, which is a shovel of wheat
@PumpkingsLol3 жыл бұрын
The modern dutch word 'schat' comes from Sceatta. Schat nowadays means treasure in Dutch. Although the Frisian word for treasure is treasoar.

The Anglo-Saxons lived together with Low Saxons and Frisians in East-Frisia in Germany, because the the West-Frisian terretories were often occupied by the romans. The native East-Frisians have the same genetic code of native Anglo-Saxon people in Northumbria and East-Anglia. People who speak Sater-Frisian in Germany with experinence in East-Frisian Low German dialects understand Old English, West-Frisian and Dutch without learning the other three languages. The Netherlands and English people forgotten always their real german roots from East- and North-Frisia in Germany who lived in the same areas with vikings and Anglo-Saxons. The viking settlement in Hedeby/ Haithabu in Schleswig-Holstein/Germany was a trading post for danish vikings and North-Frisians. Look this about the North-Frisian islands in Germany: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIesnGqmjKiskM0

No, I'm East-Frisian near to the Netherlands. I'm speaking East-Frisian Low German dialect, that also the Lutherian protestants spoken in the area of Gronningen in the time around the 30 Years war in Germany and the 80 years war in the Netherlands. I also speak a little bit Sater-Frisian/ Sater-Frysk, cause I live near the swamp area in Germany, where this frisian dialect alived over centuries. The most german and dutch people speaking Dutch or Low-German in the Frisian areas from the influence of the first translation of the Holy Bible from Martin Luther. He spoke High Standard German in Saxon and so this book influenced the transformation of the Frisian languages to Low German and Dutch. High German is the standard language in Germany for this reason.

Low German, is here called Neder-Saksisch, and in the Netherlands they called this a Dutch dialect... In Germany it is the other way around, there they say the same thing about Low German, namely that it is a German dialect...

I come from the middle of the country in the province Gelderland,( the Veluwe ), the language here is also original Neder-Saksisch. The people from Gelre were a period of time together with the Frisians .. Here is a beautiful warrior song, which we fought together against the Hollanders... kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKi0lIqXYrKCldE

I've never heard this before. A lot of East-Frisian people were working immigrants or soldiers for the protestants in the Netherlands in the 80 years war and after that. We called this people "Frieslandgänger" or "Hollandgänger". And a lot came back later as the Holländer/Dutch who cultivated the swamps and the coast in East-Frisia, like in the Netherlands. Low-German is Low-Saxon. I live here in the federal state of Niedersachsen/ Low Saxony. This state here was first founded in 1948 after 2. World War. Many Low-Saxons in Oldenburg, East-Frisia and the german Friesland (East-Frisian area,occupied by the low saxon Oldenburg) voted for another name of this federal State called Niedersachsen-Friesland (Low Saxony-Frisia) in 1948 without success. I have a frisian second name. When I visit the Netherlands, dutch people are wondering, why I'm not dutch with this name and in Germany people think, that I'm dutch with my second name, but I'm a frisian. I hate to explain this difference in both countries.

I'm not buying into this. Sure, there were extensive contacts between Frisians and Northmen/ Vikings. But to identify Frisians AS or WITH Vikings is too much. The Oldfrisian texts in this video clearly show Frisians do NOT identify themselves as Vikings, as they speak of Northmen, Vikings, northern kings and wild Vikings. Those are another people that are identified by the Frisians. The finds in the video do prove contacts but not identification of Frisians as Northmen, but nothing more. It would be the same to suppose in another thousand years that the Dutch identfied themselves as Sacandinavians, because they drove Volvo and Saab cars. Frisians are known to have participated in some vikingraids, like any people would draft 'foreigners' into their armed forces, nothing new there. Lastly, we know what type of vessels the Frisians built, they were no Viking-longships, but merchant vessels, THAT's what the Frisians were: traders, merchants, sailing all over Nortwestern Europe. Trading, not raiding. If anything (see the first text in the video), the Frisians were scared to death of the Vikings.
