The Romans could not oppress us, the northern border of the Roman Empire runs right through the Netherlands. The Dutch Frisians were among the last peoples to adhere to the old Germanic gods and to resist Christianity.

@@ANota-og2ypthe Romans did oppress Friesland...but gave up on it cause they were considered too primitive...after their last uprising the Romans thought it was not worth the trouble for a few cowskins...and gave them freedom in exchange for soldiers...and for most poor Frisians the luxury that came with being in the Roman army was quite attractive... Haha...yeah...a Frisian reverend sounds somewhat like a contradiction...

@@MarkNieuwenhuizen that map was screwy. What it showed as West Friesland is really where the language that linguists (mistakenly) call West Frisian is spoken. Like you said, West Friesland is above the Alkmaar to Hoorn line. I asked in a Frisian discussion group that if we speak West Frisian, what language do Frisians in West Friesland speak? The answer was Hollan (sorry, no accent marks on this keyboard) with some Frysk words. Grinslan/Groningen is also ours, it was split off during our war for independence when the Spanish dug in at Grins/Groningen City and took a while to evict.

The map is wrong. What they describe as Westfriesland is actually the province of Friesland. Westfriesland is on the other side of the IJselmeer the previous Zuiderzee. Frieland actually extended right down to what is now the province of Zeeland.

My husband, born in Sneek, Dutch Friesland, belongs to a family that can be traced back to 1650 and of which some members belonged to the Frisian Patriots in Franeker, tough people who stood up for their rights. The Patriots in the Netherlands opposed the Stadholder of Orange, this was the run-up to the Batavian Republic, at the same time the French Revolution arose. A 7th cousin is on a missive from the Frisian court dated September 26, 1787, it is a search warrant for 35 prominent Frisians who were wanted for a coup attempt in the Frisian States. Incidentally, what you call West Friesland is called Friesland by a Dutchman, we know a region in the Netherlands that we call West Friesland, that region is located in the province of North Holland.

It really is fascinating, my great grandfathers surname was 'Osewold', his mother's surname was 'Pielage'. Here's an name that was interesting 'Swibertus Osewold', my great great grandfather. Sneek is in the central part of Frisia, not west-Frisia. The map shown at 2:30 is not correct and was used on some maps which some historians took over. In fact West-friesland is what now is North-Holland and a part of South-Holland. Sneek is in the province Friesland which is in the 'Frisian' context middle-frisia.

At 2:30 , west frisia is a bit wrong. That's the Frisian province , and by Frisian and Dutch historian people called 'middle frisia' . West-Frisia is in the northern part of North-Holland, Netherlands. West-Frisia and Frisia itself is now connected with a long dike called 'Afsluitdijk'. It is just that from old latin the middle-frisia was calles frisia occidentalis (west-frisia) which is synominous to middle-frisia and what we calls west-frisia was in history an extended part of the west frisia know back then , we now distinctive those two as West-Friesland (the extended part ) and Friesland (West-Friesland) itself both separated by a big lake which was a part of the northern sea before the dike was put.

West-fryslân leit yn it noardlike diel fan Noard-hollân, Nederlân. West-fryslân en Fryslân sels is no ferbûn mei in lange dijk neamd 'Afsluitdijk'. It is allinne sa dat út it âlde latynsk it midden-frisia frisia occidentalis hiet wat synonym is foar west-frisia. En it hjoeddeistige west-fryslân yn de lange tiid net mear by Fryslân wie mar Hollân en tsjintwurdich in gebiet is yn de provinsje Noard Hollân en letter wer as west fryslân diel makke fan it utstrekte diel fan fryslân dat wy doe't koene as west-fryslân , en wy no ûnderskied meitsje as West-fryslân (it utstrekte diel) en Fryslân (West-fryslân) , sels beide skieden troch in grut mear dat diel ist fan de noardsee foardat de dyk waard set. I am East Frisian on both sides of my family. My mother's side (Buss) started emigrating from the old country in 1848. My father's grandfather, Johann Hinrich Friedrich Ufkes, came from Holtrop in 1870. In Adams and Hancock counties in Illinois, there is a large community of Frisian ancestry. In fact, the town of Golden was formerly know as New Ostfriesland before the name was changed to Keokuk Junction. My second cousin, Michael Neal, has written extensively about this community and its roots.

I can't give you any of the answers I'm afraid. However, things you probably need to know to research this are: your grandfather's official full name. You say his first name was Theo, but that could for example be Theodorus. Maybe he had more names as well. His date of birth. Where he was born. Which religious denomination he was. If he married on which date and where.

I had never heard of Friesland but my father never talked much about his side of the family as his personal life was complicated. However, when I recently started looking into his ancestry I found that both his mother and father have Frisian roots and that I still have Frisian cousins living in Friesland and the rest of the Netherlands. My grandfather goes way back in Terschelling and my grandmother had roots in Schiermonikoog. His name was Ruijgh and she was born Carst sometimes spelled Karst. I'm 83 and travel in my armchair but I can still learn West Frisian. My grandfather was a Dutch Reformed Minister born in the US and my grandmother was born in California from a Dutch Sea Captain. Both of them became missionaries in Japan.

"Friesland was never a country" At it's peak, roughly around 600-800 AD, Frisia covered the coastal areas from Denmark to Belgium, with it's capital Dorestad near nowadays Utrecht in the Netherlands. The first notion of the Frisians was by the Romans when they first arrived just before the year 0. So the Frisians have been around for at least more than 2000 years. The North Sea (between England and Scandinavia) used to be called Mare Frisia and the Frisians were skilled sea people. The Frankish were the first to conquer the Frisians and combined with christianization this was the beginning of their end. In the following hundreds of years slowly their spirit of freedom died out, their sacred trees cut down, the balanced power structure between men and women replaced, their control over the North Sea gone, their history denied, their language forbidden. The vacuum left in the North Sea gave space for the Vikings to control the sea, who learned several boat building techniques from the Frisians. I can't help but think that many Frisians fled to England and Scandinavia during the Frankish invasion and that they might have even been one of the instigators to raid the Frankish and other Christian lands. There still a lot I could say, but I'll leave it at this for now :) Have a great day!

i was going to comment on the map, but several already have. I would suggest that the map shows where what the "experts" call the West Frisian language is spoken. I grouse about that name for the same reason several have already posted. I would add that Grinslan/Groningen province (sorry, no accent marks on this keyboard) was split off from Friesland by the Swede whom Willem the Silent put in charge of the area during our revolt against Spain. East Friesland was briefly returned to us during the Bonapartist Kingdom of Holland. To answer when did Frisians and East Frisians first arrive, that would be the 1600s. Cornelius May, a West Frisian, and David Pitersz de Vries, explored the Zuyd/South/Delaware River, someone planted a short-lived settlement in what is now Burlington, NJ, off the top of my head i think it was May. Some "north European" bones were found when the streets were dug up for that River Line. There were East Frisians as well as Frisians in New Netherland. The splitting of Holland province was to resolve an old problem, that the two provinces with the largest populations (Holland and Sealan/Zeeland) had ganging up on Friesland and other provinces during the days of the United Provinces. The Reformed Church had already split the Synod of Holland into the Synods of North and South Holland, and the secular government followed suit hoping to keep everybody happy. East Frisian Calvinists started large emigration in the 1800s, originally wanting to be a subset in the German population of St. Louis, but their scouts were deferred to continue up the Mississippi to Savana, IL and what is now German Valley became their big center for settlements in the Great Plains. East Frisian, Frisian and Dutch Mennonites started a Mennonite center in Indiana. There are Mennonites in Missouri with East Frisian surnames. I suspect that they were among those kicked out of Russia by a Czar in the 1800s who settled in Kansas (bringing Ukrainian wheat that started the American Winter Wheat crop) and in time moved east. Sadly the ones i have talked to have lost cognizance of their heritage and think of themselves as German.

Regarding the question as to when the Frisians made their way to the US, records show Zwaanendael or Swaanendael was a short-lived Dutch/Frisian colonial settlement in Delaware built in 1631. The Zwaanendael Museum in Lewes, DE still maintains close ties with Hoorn, traditional capital of West Friesland and former Dutch East India Company base. Frisian white clay ballast bricks, Frisian head coverings, and more are on display there. I have no doubt that the Frisians were well represented among setting foot in New York and elsewhere too.

Hello. The Frisians have the same DNA as the Vikings. ( Scandinavia ) the Frisian kingdom used to be called Magna Frisia. this people stretched along the coasts from Denmark to Belgium. Because with the Vikings, the eldest son inherited everything. the other sons had to rob each other of their own wealth. so there arose around the coasts (also England) Viking population who settled at the sea. this is how the Frisian People came into existence. greetings from the Netherlands.

The whole was called Friesland the country (magna Frisia) the frisian language you talk about i guess you mean rhe Frisian spoken in the Netherlandsbecause it is not the same that is spoken in German (east) Frisia the Dutch Frisian language is very close to English but has also similarly to Norwegian. The German (east) Frisia talk plat Deutsch (flat German) the certificate you show are not from East Friesland (Germany) they are written in Dutch (Netherlands) so it is not written in Frisian but like I said Dutch The way I see it rhe documents you you show are from the Netherlands part of Frisia and there for not your family because they came as you said from German part of Friesland Maybe they are from your wife's family ? By the way the second document you show tells me its from near where I come from ad I see the village names lippenhuizen and wijnjeterp also I see the village name Marrum which is in the north of Frisia not to far from Frisiad capital Leeuwarden what you say about Frisians you are both correct we are stubborn but we are also a proud people. Most Frisians from the Netherlands are Frisian first and Dutch second what you say about our flag is also wrong there are no little hearts on it those are waterlelie leaves.an other thing i like to say is you mentioned ancestry.com which as far as I know is very good for American citizens but for European ancestry you better go with myHeritage.via that I also found relatives from me in the USA So Dutch Frisian are not east Frisians and your documents are not from German Frisia and the little hearts on the flag are waterlelie leaves

My people came from England and my Farther recently had a DNA Indicated that he is typically English,it also suggested that the amount of Northern European was minimal only 2 or 3 percent and only the same amount of Scandenavian, I assume that Northern European meant Germanic but maybe that assumption is incorrect, are Frisians considered Northern Europeans? or Germanic is there a Difference?

I am a frisian and mine shows up as dane, norwegian and a 30% slice germanic europe 4% british isles. Frisia was nearly whiped out between 300-500 due to floods and repopulated again and later impacted by 250 years viking rule. Safe to say we are a germanic people. Both spring from the area of northern germany and danmark just from different timeperiods in multiple waves.

The Birth certificate seems to be written in high German not Frisian. I can't decipher all that is written from the screen, but what I can read is definitely written in High German. One thing is for sure that since this certificate is a formal document, it's been written in the official language. Eastfrisia belonged to the kingdom of Hannover from 1815 to 1866 and then to Prussia, so the official language at the time this document was written was German. Before that the official language in Eastfrisia would have been Dutch. The document itself is written in Sütterlin script an old German script used in Germany till 1942 which makes it even harder to read.

Many different regions have been or still are inhabited by Frisians starting from the entire North sea coast, the entire northern Netherlands and now the north-western part of the Netherlands. The region shown here as West Friesland is actually Friesland proper and is the only part that is actually still Frisian. What is informaly known as West Friesland is further south along the coast and part of north Holland

Very funny to see they brought in a Frisian expert who actually knows next to nothing about the subject. The only Frisian province that is comparable to an American state is in the Netherlands. East and North Friesland are not comparable to states- they are now just unofficial historical regions and one is a municipal town government

West Friesland is actually in the province of North Holland, Friesland stands on its own, then Oost Friesland which is in Germany and then there is Nord Friesland which is also in the North area of Germany bordering Denmark. According to Wikkipedia, Groningen is in the mix but I highly doubt any Groninger would call himself a Fries. Yeah, it's complicated. Zillion years ago the whole region was called Friesland, which went along the coastline quite a bit south int he now Netherlands.

I know this video is 3 years old but it just popped up on my screen and I can't let it past without reacting. There's so much not quite right here. Some mentioned by others already. The birth record is not Frisian at all it's from Alphen and Chaam which is "Brabant" in the south of the Netherlands. Therefore it is in Dutch even as the marriage records. West Frisian is in North-Holland which once was connected to Friesland and for that reason called "West Friesland" and is a region in the province of North Holland. Officially Friesland was as big from Denmark to Belgium allong the coast line. Normally it's not 'you go by the faith which church is located in you town' but there are more churges in every town. The word "Tsiis" (Frisian for cheese) is pronounced exactly te same. Now there's a difference in the Frisian languages because of the modernificasion and connections to other countries but there used to be one Germanic Frisian language and from this language and other Germanic languages like the Saxons the English and Scottish language was derived from. I think the Gothic signs you speak about are the "runes" which were used in a small way until the 17th century but not in these documents. You know New York was taken back from the English by a Frisian person (from my village) in 1673. Take a look at "Emigrants from Friesland" (facebook) for ancestry research.

😂 Cheese in Frisian is tsies (long ie) not stis (short i). Sheep is skiep (long ie). In frisian and in english it is both, not in dutch or German!, singular and plural. Old english and old frisian were identical. Frisians traded a lot in Brittain and with scandinavia, With Brittain already in roman times. The northsea was called frisian sea. Frisians also fought for the romans, surely they did not return after the rom ans left brittain.

Napoleon introduced familynames, in around 1800, that is why he stopt around 1789. He should look furter back, the name before ended with their fathers name. So if your father was called Jan and he named you Willem, your name would be Willem Jans.

Discusting, this wrong information giving by Rev. Nathan S.Busker. All bulshit. You do'n't know anything about Fryslân. Stop with this nonsens !!! Our province of Fryslân is not called, WestFriesland, WRONG ! Only the (little part) in the north area in the province of Noord-Holland in the Netherlands is called West-Friesland. Actually, because it took part, more than tausend years ago as a part of Magna Frisia, a very large area of, what is now called the Netherlands. (from the border of Denmark till the coast/border of Belgium.) The Frisian flag has no harts in it, Those are leafs of a Waterplant, called Waterlelieblad/Pompeblêd. Marum, Lippenhuizen, Wijnterp is not situated in Ost-Friesland in Germany, but in Fryslân. Please, do inform properly, before you talk about this in Family Genealogy !!
