I had the same problem, but I got myself some new skates that I really like. They have figure skate blades (so, more stability forwards and backwards, and toe picks to push off of), but they're branded as "recreational" skates, so they're more padded, and they have better ankle support. Look up "VIC Women's Recreational Skate" at Canadian Tire, and you'll find them. I also have really high-arched feet that used to hurt in skates, but I solved that problem with yellow Superfeet insoles. Since we're under lockdown here in Ontario, and just about everything is closed except for our local outdoor rinks, I figured that it was worth it to get myself some better skates so I could enjoy something about winter this year.

I'm one of those people who insists on perfection in all new endeavors, so actually tries nothing! This video was extremely encouraging, and I especially appreciated that the first on-ice lesson was how to fall. It wasn't presented as a "what if," but as an expected consequence. I'm trying to work up the nerve to give it a try, and this video helped!

Lol, I've been roller skating since age two, roller blading since ten, and ice skating (competently) since 16. I'm 36 now. Falling is *never* a what if. I'm a good skater, and I can't even tell you how many times I've scraped my knees, elbows, shins, hands, and even shoulder once because of falls. Nothing deters me, though. I love skating, and I never wanna stop.

Based on my experience running two youth programs and 10 years of coaching this pretty much sums up the first two weeks of any learn to skate program (assuming you're skating once a week). This is a great video for youngsters to learn the absolute basics. Some folks gave her a hard time about wearing a hockey helmet, but wearing a helmet is a requirement -- or strongly suggested -- for most programs. We also want the kids to wear a cage ... but I'm glad the skater in the video decided not to wear the bird cage.

As a skater myself, I can’t even begin to emphasise how important it is to protect your head. Using a helmet helped me become confident to try new things as a skater until the point where it became a problem with speed etc. I now wear a lighter head protection at practice and none at competitions. I made that choice myself though, knowing how a hit against your head could affect you in a worst case scenario. Small children do not. They should wear a helmet.

2 sizes smaller if you play Ice hockey..Go to a hockey rink let them fit you. The smaller you can fit the better. Bend your knees not out spread try to keep them close together. Orient on your chest going forward and look left and right and feel a balance in the middle of your chest.EX. Adjust your weight ..point the left skate to the left if you want to turn left once you start adjust the right leg to it keep your leg close Adjust the stride small at first once you become comfortable spread out your legs. Your riding a bike.. You have to adjust your weight turn the skate..adjust the wheel on turning leg. Apply the other leg for stability. It's an art you got to feel it.

@brooklyndestiny4462 жыл бұрын
So when I was younger, I used to watch figure skating all the time, and I knew without a shadow of a doubt that I could do it. I don’t know how I knew that I could do it, but I just knew that I could do it well when I was a little bit older And I finally got to go ice-skating for the first time with a school field trip and I was so nervous because everybody asked if I can ice skate and I was like I’m pretty sure I can like I just know that I can so I was so nervous because I was like if I fall on my ass I’m gonna be the laughingstock, but as soon as I put my skates on and I stood up and I practiced for a little bit because they say before you got on the ice you should you know exercise and be prepared with all the skates on, and with the skates on so I did, and as soon as I went out on the ice I started skating and I was so good everybody was in shock. Even my teachers were like have you took figure skating and I was like no I’ve never been ice-skating my entire life. I’ve never been figure skating none of that, and if there was somebody there that was a figure skater she was trained in figure skating, and she was practicing that day and she was probably about our age because that was like in middle school and she came up to me and she said you’re really good who do you train for who’s your coach? I said I don’t have a coach. This is my first time ever ice-skating and she was like you’re lying you’ve had training and I said no I really haven’t. I’ve just watched figure skating as a child and I had a passion for it certain things I have a passion for and I can just pick up on like when it comes to playing the piano. I play by ear because I can’t read notes so I play by ear I’m very gifted when it comes to things like that and she advised that I definitely should get into a class and get a coach because I was really good and I wasn’t a beginner. I was an advanced and I ended up doing that. I need getting a couch and practicing all the time it kind of sucked how much I practiced because it took away from my life completely, but it was so fun and I was trying to work my way up to Olympic status by I ended up getting hurt right before everything was about to blow up. It was during practice one day I didn’t realize that my ice skates string on a shoestring head came undone, and I went to do a jump or a Leap whatever you wanna call it and when I came back down, the string went up underneath the blade and it caused me to immediately like be thrown, and I ended up messing up my ankle, and I could have worked hard again after my ankle got better, but I just chose to no longer pursue figure skating as a profession, because after everything is said, and done yeah I may go to the Olympics and all of that but after everything is said and done I wasted so much time so much of my life but I still love ice-skating and figure skating and I have not been in so long and I wanna go back it’s such a good exercise it’s so fun and basically from my story what I want to let people now is if you have a dream and you know that you can do something put that in your mind and have that mindset and you can achieve it even if you’ve never done it before, you would be surprised at what you can learn just from watching and figure skating on television I had never been in my life. I just watched it and when I say I watched it, I watched every move. I watched the way that they kept their form and it stuck in my mind and I had dreams about me figure skating and then, when I finally did it, I definitely surprised myself because I was great so if you have a dream pursue that dream come out or what it is, you can do it

Gonna have to disagree with the one size smaller comment. I am size 10 and got a 9.5 in skates and they were WAAAYYYYYY too tight to even wear let alone skate in. I gave it my best and managed to skate for around 10 minutes before the extreme pain and discomfort forced me off the ice. For reference, I was a combat arms soldier capable of walking 20 kms with 60 plus pounds on my back in just under 3 hours. Leg and foot pain are not real things for me. So I have to say, just get skates that fit or you won't want to skate ever.

U of A Pandas hockey team had a Halloween party. Best party I've ever been to. It's too bad the guys were way out numbered and the girls were drunk, but still, a good time was had by all. ;D :Doug

POV: you look forward to ice skating all your life. Then you're actually going to go. Then you realize that it's rollerblading on ice and you freak out and back out.

My skates are a little too long is that okay? They fit tight and snug but my toes dont touch the end. Its more comfortable that way because then my toes aren't aching. I also found these skates in good condition at goodwill for 12 dollars so I dont really have a lot of options xD do you think the fit of my skates will be safe?

Yes that's perfectly fine. And don't tighten laces too tight either. 40+ year skater here. I still skate every day.

It's all in applying pressure to your lower legs and feet. Counteracts you being tossed forward !

Eccentric One place your weight on the middle to back of your skate. I'm not even near a good skater but this is what helps me. Hope it helps you :)$

Put your feet together (that'll slow you down), bend knees slightly, hands on thighs, weight middle to back of skates. Keep your head up.
