You should do what feels best for you, whatever that may be! We can all get inspired by seeing what other people do in these times, but what works for someone else to feel better doesn’t have to be the exact activity that will make you feel better at this moment. If you want to watch Netflix the whole day or do a 5 k every day or everything in between, that’s totally ok! 🌸❤️ I myself am in this ‘everything in between area’ of doing nothing today and tomorrow but then run a 5 k for 3 days straight. For me it’s all about balance! 🙏🏼 Have a lovely evening!

What I reccomend is that your mum must ALWAYS speak to you in Dutch during the day or during basic conversation and small talk then you tend to pick it up naturally. I didnt fluently speak my mothers first language until I was 11 and this really helped when she stopped speaking to me in english all the time

I am dutch myself but when I speak to someone who’s trying to learn Dutch I find myself adapting to their pronounciation instead of speaking proper dutch 😅

Yes! I moved from Germany to Switzerland a few years ago, and went from knowing German and a bit of English to knowing German, English, French, Italian and Latin (you are required to take at least two 'national' languages at school for multiple years). Sadly, they're changing the curriculum in grammar schools so as to give mathematics and natural sciences more lesson time, and (myself included) not all students always appreciate learning about, say, the intricacies of French grammar.I still hope that the idiosyncratic linguistic set-up in Switzerland won't disappear altogether, it's kind of cool that things like food labels, our government's website etc. are all in various languages.

Wow your Dutch is so good already! Impressive! It's also quite funny to hear you literally translate from English sometimes. I find myself doing the same since I lived in the UK when I was little and am now doing a bachelor's degree that's taught fully in English. So, like your mum said, I end up having weird sentence structures sometimes. It's kinda funny to recognise the thought process. Keep up the good work! Hats off to you cause I hear from many people that Dutch isn't particularly easy to learn!

My whole family is Chinese but having been born and raised in the UK, I've really struggled to pick Cantonese up despite having gone to Chinese school and having the language spoken around me my entire life, but my parents mostly speak to me in English and obviously at school I learnt English as my first language. It's actually so embarrassing bc others my age can actually hold convos and I can't🙈 I left Chinese school last yr bc hated it lmao. But now I'm going to try learn it by myself!

I’m Chinese too, but I was born and raised in the Netherlands so my Chinese is pretty rubbish oops :) I could speak Mandarin when I was little but I’ve lost it after going to a Dutch school and only speaking Dutch most of the time. I feel so embarrassed too when I’m not able to speak in Mandarin and I really want to be able to speak the language again. (I hated Chinese school too lol)

Jade, wat is je Nederlands goed! Een tip: vaak kan je de “r” uitspreken op de Franse manier! In plaats van de “r” te rollen, komt hij meer vanuit de keel. The r also has different pronunciations in Dutch depending on where in the word it is, so that’s difficult.. But I figured since you speak French it could be helpful to know!

Aah you sound so great! Don't worry about making mistakes, you sound better than a lot of non-native people who have already been living in the Netherlands for a few years (no shade implied). Any Dutch person will be astonished at how well you already know the language! Tbh no one ever really goes the extra mile to become fluent in Dutch, so we dutchies really appreciate it when someone is trying to learn the language. Even if someone makes the tiniest effort to learn a few words it's already a huge compliment to us! So don't be embarrassed about mistakes, you're doing great and it's part of the process! ^-^
