As he clung to a tree, he saw Lord Shiva dancing on the waters, surrounded by snakes and other creatures. Shiva beckoned Markandeya to join him, and as he did, the sage realized that the dance was not just a physical movement but a cosmic representation of the cycles of life, death, and rebirth. As they danced, Shiva revealed to Markandeya the secrets of the universe, including the impermanence of all things and the eternal nature of the soul.
