I saw many acts before they made it big (Journey before Perry, Aerosmith between albums 1 and 2, Frampton before Comes Alive, Fleetwood Mac before Rumours, Foghat before Slow Ride, etc.) and they were always better then. Something about being more earnest, trying harder, being more humble, yet more brash. Still, it was good to see them taste success, and there were always new acts to catch. The ones who didn't go on to wide acclaim were the best of all, though, like Johnny Winter, Frank Zappa...and Unknown Hinson. Saw him at the Continental Club, and it was the closet thing to a (downsized) '70s concert that I'd seen in quite a while. It's hard to say which is tougher: being ruined by success, or ruined by the hard life that comes with never making it, and being ripped off by all the leeches in the music industry. If only everyone could be as intelligent, and shrewd, as Frank. Too bad he didn't pay as much attention to protecting his body as he did to protecting his creations and his fortune. 27 years later, with a legacy of music that's still a resonating mine of riches, Zappa leaves a hole. Sorry for diverging. I'm sure some will be offended for my daring to compare UH to FZ. Of course nobody could compare with Frank's breadth, intelligence, compositional skills, and musicianship. But in a strange if not direct way, there is a comparison. Good humor is good humor, and creativity is creativity.

My favorite band is The Fall, only permanent member Mark E. Smith. They tasted some level of success but put out basically an LP a year only us devoted really ever got into. I know exactly what youre saying and its true. Unknown is completely in that realm.
