Courts have been getting less and less adamant about that. Look at the Tallahassee police evidence planting case. The cops were on video planting evidence and the judge didn't dismiss the case out of hand. The stop was illegal. Everything they did was illegal after they made the illegal stop. However, if they are towing her car they MUST search the car to both inventory the vehicle and remove anything that would be dangerous (like the revolver they found). The search was still illegal but it was necessary and in line with procedure given they were towing it.
